The Rho(Rhodedendren)Ridge trail might be a viable alternative but it
around 4000'and could be under snow. It's 10 miles long along a ridge
with a spectacular view of Mt Jefferson. I haven't ridden it yet but it
looks like it could be choice. It's about 20 miles past the Indian Henry
CRT trailhead, almost to Bagby Hot Springs.

I have hiked Hamilton Mtn, the place you are referring to just north of
Beacon Rock many times. There is a designated hiking trail that follows up
the the south side with great gorge views, but other double track type
horse trails are there as well. There is some riding at the upper portions
of Hamilton Mtn just to it's north. When riding the 3 Corner Rock Loop, I
believe you can actually get to Hamilton Mtn from there at the upper
portions of 3 Corner Rock (you'll see signs for other trails as well as
the PCT), just below the craggy summit. The gate to Hamilton Mtn trailhead
might be closed now, but I think you can park at Beacon Rock and ride up
the road.
I hope I am not abusing this list, but........
On a side note for anyone who likes rock climbing/mountaineering, read on.
If you don't care, you can stop right here.
There is a slideshow, fundraiser and sale at Climb Max on SE Division and
21st on November 12 at 7:30. Local reps from such non-profits as the
American Alpine Club, Access Fund and Madrone Wall Preservation Committee
will be there.
A climber/author acquaintance from Washington Keith Mark Johsnon is doing

We've all seen the Beacon Rock while driving thru the Gorge, but did you
know there are 13 miles of
bike trails there? Has anyone ever checked it out? A gentleman from Mazamas,
Richard Thomas, called
me back in early summer and said he has been hiking there for decades. One
thing he never sees are other
people! He asked me why don't we check the area out as a possible riding
spot? Well, if you check out
this site, http://www.parks.wa.gov/parkpage.asp?selectedpark=Beacon%20Rock
<http://www.parks.wa.gov/parkpage.asp?selectedpark=Beacon%20Rock&pageno=1>
&pageno=1
it says there are 13 miles of bike trails, 13 miles of horse trails and 9
miles of hiking trails. The area in
question is the rest of the park ACROSS HWY 14. I guess no one ever ventures
over there after climbing up the rock.
Has anyone ever ridden there? I've sent the WA State parks people an e-mail
asking them what the scoop
is, but no response so far. Could this be a new playground for us?
If the link doesn't work, just google Beacon Rock State Park, WA

The Gun Club reroute project is moving ahead nicely. Last thursday Terry
Larsell and I put in a little over 3 hrs each and managed to get the
east side bridge installed. Terry's building expertise was monumental to
the fast construction time. I put in an additional 2hrs of trail cutting
and bank management on either side of the bridge last tuesday. Kay
Kucera has been hacking away at the trail behind the buildings at the
gun club (and I hope she is keeping track of her time), but she is
making great progress. The Gun Club members have been very helpful
through all of this.
We had a meeting with Bill Weiler from the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife on
monday morning. It went well and we will be applying for our permits
hopefully this week. Thanks Bill for showing us some of the important
things to have covered on the permit applications.
Thanks also to Jay Carroll for doing some research and drawings of ideas
for the west end bridge. Construction on that end should hopefully begin
soon.
There is still some small touch up work that could be done on the upper
trail. If anyone is interested shoot me an e-mail or give me a call. We
will probably try to do at least one more actual work party. Right now
individuals involved have been going down and working whenever time
permits. This has been keeping progress steadily moving along. Thanks to
everyone! The rerouted section is a blast to ride and the bridge is
easily rideable from both directions so no more starting your ride with
wet feet.

We rode the CRT a few weeks ago and it's only about 8mi. There are some
other trails in the area but I'm not that familiar with them. We rode
from the trail head, down to Fish Camp, and back up the road (15mi
loop). The conditions were almost dangerous in spots (soft shoulders,
loose rocks covered in fallen wet leaves, spots of wash out, etc...) and
there were a few downed trees (at least two I couldn't ride over). Some
sections were pretty over-grown as well. It definitely put my skills to
test in more then one spot but we both had a great time. Be prepared for
some "less then stellar" trail conditions due to rain and lack of
maintenance. We saw no recent evidence of bikes but ran across a few
hikers. We were doing a "moderate" pace and it still took 3 hours, YMMV.
To get there:
Go through Estacada and continue out HWY 224 (approx 15 miles). You'll
pass Fish Camp (the end of the CRT) and about 7mi later you'll see a
sign for Indian Henry campground, turn right (Forest Service Road 4620).
The parking lot for trail head is up just a short distance on the right.
Make sure you take the trail to the right, this is the CRT. All in all
it's about a 60mi drive from Portland.
Hope this helps!

I am thinking about doing the Clackamas River Trail this Sunday. I would
like to ride at least 30 miles, preferably 50. Is the CRT that long and if
not are there other trails to incorporate with the Clackamas.
Let me know if there are any suggestions and recommendations regarding this
trail system. This is an area and trail system that I have not yet
explored.
I am also not familiar with where this trail is located. What is the best
way to reach the trail system. Thanks for any information you may have.
Thanks

The Kona A wasn't a horst link, the rear pivot was on the seatstay and the front
pivot was around the bottom bracket shell. That's really the only way to make a
full suspension without a spring loaded tensioner. The chain tension was set
with horizontal dropouts (track-ends). an EBB in that design wouldn't work
because if the EBB were set on the top half of the rotation the effective
chaninstay length shortens under comression (loosening the chain), and if on the
bottom half it lengthens (tightening the chain).

This is my guess. Maybe an engineer can help with this one (Roger).
I belive the Titus Susan rides uses a Horst link. So our lab testing proves
that there is something funny. My guess is that the Horst link keeps the
length between the rear axle and the bottom bracket within an acceptible
tolerance under pedalling and braking on relatively flat terrain (isloating
inputs to the suspension from these systems), without compromising a fully
active engagement of the suspension. When the suspension starts progressing
through the travel the chain tension is adjusted by the derailure more than
the Horst linkage.

It would seem like true Horst-Link pivot designs shouldn't suffer
from this. Or does the fact that it's supposed to keep the chainstay
length the same throughout the range of the suspension only really
apply on paper?
