Subject: Oregon Junior Cyclocross series for 2010
rondot@...
Send Email Send Email

To those of you possibly interested in helping Juniors have their own series in
2010.
I want to commend Team Pacific Power Blue Sky for taking the lead and each
sponsor for stepping up and creating a series where the Juniors get to race on a
Cyclocross course without another category or two of adults racing with them.
Not that the second scenario is all that bad, it just is a big message to the
juniors that their race is important. It gives them the respect they deserve as
humans (the kiddie cross races are somewhat different and need their own
format).
My reason for this post is to urge any team, promoter, sponsor or whoever to
consider working with the Blue Sky Team to make the series grow next year. I do
not have the ideas or answers on how to do this, but maybe some brighter lit
minds than this fellow could come up with a process / procedure that would allow
the juniors to have their own race at the many Cross races around Oregon so the
kids can race. Maybe shorten the beginner and C races so time permits. I am
just putting this out for consideration. Those willing to help make it happen
will do so and those of you with children may get to have a child racing a race
that you can actually watch and cheer for as you are not also on the course in
your race at the same time. Thanks to the two series that did allow the Jr.
Series to be part of their events. Work together to make it happen teams,
sponsors, promoters. Then we will get the same going for a mtb, bmx and road
series. But start with Cross... the kids love it. Think about it!

Please forward freely. Personally I feel Powell Butte has a lot more
opportunity than Forest Park, case in point: it currently has more single
track available to bikes (depending on what map you use).

Powell Butte's Trail plan is under review and will be open for redesign
considerations by the City. PLEASE fill out the following and let your view
regarding the creation and opening of more singletrack on Powell Butte be
heard. Mountain bikers were represented well at the public forum, but we
need more energy to ensure trail is not lost, but maintained and constructed
for future use.

If you have not filled out the form please do so now! The City is giving the
public until Friday, November 27th to submit comments. The opening page
shows 3 different public areas. They are proposing spending a lot of $ on
parking resources for horses and cars, and not a lot on trail redesign and
maintenance.

Points to make:

Select that you bike there

Invest in the trail system, rework for anti fall line and proper drainage

Dogs on leash and required horse manure bags

Don't close down trails, make more, make them open use or at least give each
user 1 private trail they are solely responsible for upkeep

Use proper tread, not pea gravel or bark mulch

Invest in the IMBA resources for Trail design and ask for their help for
proper trail construction

Ryan,

Thanks for promoting this program within the club and working hard to
maintain a relationship with ODF. When I was able to participate in Trail
Patrol happenings this past year, I could tell they appreciated our
involvement. Also thanks to Wayne Nailion for his dedication in the same
area.

Whoops, got my wires crossed, that meeting was actually last week and was the
last one of the year!  Sorry if you missed out on attending this meeting and
participating in Trail Patrol during 2009.  Trail Patrol meetings will pick back
up in January.  We're always looking for more volunteers to help out with
different activities and Trail Patrol is a great one to get involved with.  I'm
always on the lookout for do-ers that want to help out with furthering the cause
of mountain biking.  Trail Patrol provides a relatively easy entry for someone
looking to get involved for the first time.

As a member of the Tillamook State Forest Trail Patrol, you will receive many
benefits.  Some of which include first aid and CPR training, free reserved
campsites with free and delivered seasoned firewood, the opportunity to meet and
interact with other trail users, trail cred amongst ODF employees and with
fellow NWTA members, keep up to speed on forest and ODF recreation management
issues, receive workers compensation in the event that you are injured while
volunteering as a trail patroller, learn all of the trails, be granted use of
the ODF radios for communication with other patrollers/ODF land managers/law
enforcement/emergency medical personnel, training in scene management and
incident response, and many other great benefits.

Feel free to email me for more information about how you can get involved with
Trail Patrol for 2010.

Kind regards,

Unofficial, most frequented (and built/maintained) by the BMX crowd. Best
suited for a 20" bike, most lines are big.
