Of course we should be reminded that individual's posts to the listserv
do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the PUMP board or membership
majority ;) More importantly than that... is how does this relate to
mountain biking in Portland/NW? Which candidate is going to bring us
more singletrack - that is what I really want to know!

Pat Paulsen for president!!? I met him?when I was?10 or so, in a Chinese
restaurant.? Am selling his valuable autograph on craigs,,,,,going once,
twice,,,,,,,,Mark?

Speaking of candidates for city commissioner, nurse Amanda is good yet attorney
John Branam is better -- a smart Corvallis graduate, who fundraises?for PPS
[Portland public schools].? He'll secure jobs & generate business
growth.??Considerate man, meeting him at Miss. studio.

And as follow-up since last 4/28, meeting Craig Robinson [former--NWestern
coach, wallstreet trader, & Michelle Obama's brother] at the N Kerby center --
plus 3 other TALL Blazers, I was a TRUE Groupie!!?

Acted like one too, snapping photos of them & self, what fun.??Watching the
3-on-3 hoops by our audience-players was hilarious, good,,,,,,,believing that I
was at a Globetrotters match!? --Rosey, Wishin' you were there

Well, dang.

I was just about to launch a pitch for the Pat Paulsen candidacy.
Sure, he's dead, but that doesn't mean the three front runners are
any better.

,,,,,,,regarding receiving Bike maintenance at Gateway bike shop [within
4-months], I snapped two rear Skewers on my commuter Specialized -- due to my
bubble-Butt, I presume.? Weight-wise: including my rack & 3-lb lock, and
recently, I added a pannier, toting 2-lbs of paperwork = bubble-Buttness!!

This is why I agreed to installing the higher quality [double-walled Rim] with
external Hub, for improved, efficient geometry.? So far, so good!? I am happy
with the Upgrades, as I learned that within 2-years, to check/ replace my Bike
chain before it Morphs into a giant Jump-rope.?

By the way, we hiked much through the SE Holgate neighborhood this past weekend
Door-to-door, canvassing people for their Votes.? It's worthy-work to me,
sharing the conviction & passion with Others.? Naturally too, I cycle daily.

Careful!

We are a 501-3C which means we can not donate money to candidates. I
also believe we can not endorse candidates either.

Remember the listserve is fed into our website and bikeportland.org.

Preamble

As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all
individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to
sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.

We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential
precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must
be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can
peace and prosperity be realized.

Consequently, we defend each person's right to engage in any activity
that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom
brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to
follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from
government or any authoritarian power.

In the following pages we have set forth our basic principles and
enumerated various policy stands derived from those principles.

These specific policies are not our goal, however. Our goal is nothing
more nor less than a world set free in our lifetime, and it is to this
end that we take these stands.

I met Arthur the ride leader at 10:30. I was the only one who showed
up. So Arthur and I took off about 10:40. The ride starts with a
climb up the old military road, well compacted gravel that has not
seen any use for years. The road switchbacks once, then turns north.
Just as it turns north, there is an opportunity to walk out on the
top of the water fall. The road last for just under a mile then it
becomes much more primitive. There is a distinct cut along the hill
side, but I would consider it more of a track than a road.
We meet and chatted with a horse riding group, I think they are the
Backwoods Riders, but am not certain.
The leader of the horse group, had come up the day before and mowed
the grass in the field, and put or replaced trail markers (which were
small pieces of red flagging on a metal skewer)
The trail turned into a game trail as we ascended along the side of
the creek. An old fence line, ran some distance off to the other side
of the trail The narrow game trail ran along a moderately steep side
slope. We stopped several times to catch our breath. The trail was
for the most part very ride able, with lots of small boulders along
it to negotiate. This and a couple of more game trails would be the
closest we would come to single track.
As the old farm house and barns, that is now the Columbia Hills State
Park, came into view, we turned and crossed the field. Riding in the
mowed down area, following the flags to a gate, then up onto a road
and over to the farm house for some free lunch. The ride up was just
over 2 miles and took a little over an hour.
On our trip back, Arthur and I rode out across the fields, following
the flagged path, the grass mowed down in most areas. Arthur told me
that it was a much easer ride since it was mowed down, I guess the
tall grass makes the ride much more challenging. I well have to take
his word for that because I followed him and stayed on the coarse
that had been laid out. I don't know how fragile the soil is and
since they are trying to turn this into a trail, I stayed on track.
The ground gave way under the bike, as Arthur put it, like Styrofoam.
It had a unique feel to it, that's for sure. We would hit small
sections of game trail, and the ground was firm, the game trail about
three or four inches lower then the surrounding field. The sections
of game trail were mainly near water crossings and following
ridgelines.
We road east to the edge of the property then south to the edge of
the gorge. The view was spectacular the whole way. Once we reached
the gorge we started descending back toward the old military road.
There was one section that was very steep, since there was no trail
the lose rock was very unpredictable. Arthur told me they were going
to make a switchback across the face of the hill here.
About a mile and a half or so from the trail head, and I got a flat.
After changing the tube we continued our descent. Following a
primitive track for a ways, then back onto game trail as we
approached the stream.
We rode up hill next to the stream for a quarter mile or so, lots of
large broken limbs and a couple of fallen trees along the game trail,
but we were able to ride most of it, bumping over most of the debris
and getting off a couple of times to lift the bike over a fallen tree.
We were soon back at the water crossing and then back onto the gravel
road. a fast descent, stopping only a couple of times for the gates.
The total ride was about seven miles, with 800 feet of elevation
gain. It took us around three hours of ride time, but we were going
at a very leisurely pace. This well be a very nice intermediate trail
once developed.

The public has until May 22 to respond to the official Forest Service
Coyote Wall/Catherine Creek (Syncline) proposal for trails. We need to meet
to create a letter to send to the FS, responding to that proposal. If we do
not speak up now, then their proposal will most likely be adopted. For
more, check out our website at www.camba.info

Please meet with us on Monday, May 5, 6:30 pm at the Widmere Real Estate
Office in Bingen, WA. All input for this response is welcomed!

Since it is Cinqo de Mayo, bring something to eat, if convenient.

See you there! Ann McDonald

Amy,
I am confused. If the ride is at 9 p.m. how are we going to see the 70
miles of panoramic view?

For some sick reason though, I am intrigued enough to drive all that way
for an 8 mile ride.

Amy have you been on this ride?
thanks
Susan

I just forwarded both you you Ric's contact info. Yes, he and his
family are in New Zealand.

As a matter of definition, we should remember that erosion is a
natural process - it even occurs in places where trails have not be
constructed and we can not prevent its occurrence. But, a properly
constructed and maintained trail will minimize erosion compared with
a trail that is not properly constructed and maintained.

I just uploaded the 1st Trail Building Tips presentation to the PUMP
website forums (http://www.pumpclub.org/node/303).

See several of you at the work party tomorrow morning. I am planning
to ride afterwards.

Mountain Bicyclists Congratulate Portland on Platinum Award, Seek
Better Trails

By Jill Van Winkle, IMBA Trail Solutions

IMBA and Portland United Mountain Pedalers wish to congratulate the
city of Portland on achieving the League of American Bicyclists'
Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community award, the first large city in
the country to be awarded this status. Portland is a community that
values bicycles for transportation and recreation. From innovative
bicycle facility designs to PedalPalooza, the city effervesces with a
vibrant, two-wheeled, human-powered culture that is second to none.

Although the accolades are well deserved, the mountain bicycling
community believes there is still work to be done in Portland.
Specifically, we call for better access to city parks and recreation
areas for off-road riding. While other large cities – including
Seattle, Philadelphia, Austin and even New York — have quality
mountain bicycling experiences right in the center of their cities,
Portland does not. Nor does Portland currently have a comprehensive
strategy to provide opportunities for off-road cyclists. Of the 40
miles of non-paved trails in the city’s parks, there are less than
6.5 miles of singletrack. Only a quarter mile of trail in Portland
has been built specifically for mountain biking.

Citizens Formulating Mountain Biking Action Plan

To address the lack of riding opportunities, a citizens’ group has
teamed up with IMBA and Portland-based trail planning professionals
Alta Planning + Design to analyze the potential for new trail
opportunities in and around Portland. The group will consider diverse
options, such as building “daisy-chain†greenway links to give
access to singletrack trails, following the lead of Seattle's
innovative model facility at Colonnade, and various public/private
partnership projects. Connecting to Portland’s bicycling
transportation infrastructure will promote “ride to ride†cycling
opportunities. These actions could produce substantial new mountain
biking facilities for Portland in less than 4 years.

Portland loves finding unique solutions to its bicycle issues. This
is the spirit that makes Portland a Platinum Community. But we’re
not going to rest on our laurels. How do we get more people on
bikes? How do we grow as a cycling community? We fill the void in
mountain biking opportunities, so that Portland continues to expand
its potential as a fantastic cycling community. jill@...

Mount St Helens Advisory Committee

By David Anderson

Thursday April 24th marked the first of six fact finding meetings
being held by the Mount St. Helens Citizen Advisory Committee in
Kelso, WA. The committee was formed by U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell
and Patty Murray and Representatives Brian Baird and Norm Dicks. The
goal of the advisory committee is to “explore the community’s
vision for the future of the Mt. St Helen’s Monument and make a
recommendation regarding the best course of action for ensuring that
Mount St. Helens remains a key tourist destination and economic
engine for the area while preserving its natural resources and
allowing it to remain a world leader for scientific research.†It is
the intent of the advisory committee to be independent and not debate
over management of the area. Once this process is complete, it will
be the responsibility of the committee to formulate a recommendation
for congress. Read more… http://pumpclub.org/node/181

Gary Fisher at the Bike Gallery

After seeing all the advertisements for Gary Fisher bikes with Gary
wearing bright flashy floral print shirts I was a bit surprised when
he showed up at the Bike Gallery last Thursday he was wearing all
black! He was wearing a brown baseball cap, but not his signature
floral print shirt! Now the black coat on the other hand was
something else! Long zippered sleeves, full collar that covered his
shoulders and down to the middle of his back. And the tails! The
jacket had tails! Gary did not disappoint this observer! Read more…

May 26 PUMP Smith Creek - Mount St Helens ride. This will be a repeat
of the Smith Creek out and back trip that we went on in 2007! We
will descend in to Smith Creek on the remains of Forest Service Road
8322 and then head north on the Smith Creek trail. The blown down
trees we encountered in 2007 have reportedly been cleared. The
descent in to Smith Creek is a fast one, while the trail up the
canyon is generally not too technical. The climb back out of Smith
Creek is fairly steep. Anticipate seeing no one else, or possibly
only a few other explorers after we leave the Marble Mountain Snow
Park. The washout at June Lake on Road 83 will be repaired this year
so this will be the last time we will have the mountain to our
selves! We will meet at the Gateway Park and Ride at 7:00A on
Memorial Day to carpool north. We will leave the Park and Ride at
7:30A so please allow time to consolidate cars. We can meet
Washington Riders in Cougar at 8:45A. Intermediate ride.

May 26 Free mountain and road bike demos from noon through 5pm. Test
out women-specific bikes from Specialized. Choose from feather-light
carbon road racers to buttery-smooth full-suspension mountain bikes.
Sorella Forte team members will escort small groups to Mt. Tabor to
provide a realistic test of the equipment. Good hills and descents
for the roadies, and nice trails for the mountain bikers. "Tours"
leaving roughly each hour, starting at 1pm. Be prepared to ride about
12 miles. Unlike Saturday, these tours are not recommended for true
beginners. River City Bicycles, 706 SE MLK Blvd.

PUMP,

I just got off the phone with Jill, and this is all a miscommunication
and got posted
to a blog, which can and should be revised shortly by the author. This
has been
requested already, in able to clear up the confusion.

PUMP is the sole IMBA supported and dues paying club in PDX, and we are
a
part of this initiative. Note the Title and positive tone of the
original IMBA Press Release,
which is what IMBA and PUMP approved, so if/when asked about the blog
article, please
ask them to refer to that press release.

Expect to hear an update soon, meanwhile do as I am, count to 10 before
hitting the 'send' button.

Meanwhile, make plans to attend another one of our super successful
Forest Park Trail events,
tomorrow morning. Work off that stress, in the woods we love to play in!
Event: Newton Road Trail (Build/Maintenance) Party
Date: Saturday, May 3rd, 2008
Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 PM
Meet Location: Road Parking near Rail Road Tracks on NW Marina Way off
Hwy 30

Please click Map: http://tinyurl.com/479e95

Directions: From Portland drive out Highway 30 and make a right on NW
Marina Way. *Marina Way is on the North side of the St John's Bridge*
Cross rail road tracks and park where ever you are able on the shoulder.
Jeff Hough's Forest Park Conservancy vehicle will be in the pole
position and will be the meet point.

Newton Road is directly across Hwy 30 from the meet point (though not
marked on the map), but has no parking area. For that reason, we will be
parking on NW Marina and walking over to Newton after sign in and
orientation.

Please:
* RSVP so we can plan work to be done and have enough tools on hand for
everyone (and pastries!)

Do we know any the participants of the "citizens' group"? I know that
ALTA has at least one active mountain biker who is an employee. ALTA
offers trail planning as part of their professional services. It's great
marketing for them.

The "citizens' group" is supposed to be presenting their ideas to the
Blue Ribbon Trails Committee on Monday at 4pm in the Metro Council
Chambers. I will try to make the meeting if my schedule permits.

I saw this last night. Here is the press release from Jill VanWinkle(posted on

place. With that in mind I sent ane-mail to Jill this morning asking about
IMBA's stance on this. Staytuned.ShaneIMBA and Portland United Mountain Pedalers

the country tobe awarded this status. Portland is a community that values

two-wheeled,human-powered culture that is second to none. Although the accolades
are well deserved, the mountain bicyclingcommunity believes there is still work
to be done in Portland.Specifically, we call for better access to city parks and
recreationareas for off-road riding. While other large cities --
includingSeattle, Philadelphia, Austin and even New York -- have quality
mountainbicycling experiences right in the center of their cities, Portland
doesnot. Nor does Portland currently have a comprehensive strategy toprovide
opportunities for off-road cyclists. Of the 40 miles ofnon-paved trails in the
city's parks, there are less than 6.5 miles ofsingletrack. Only a quarter mile
of trail in Portland has been builtspecifically for mountain biking. Citizens
Formulating Mountain Biking Action PlanTo address the lack of riding
opportunities, a citizens' group hasteamed up with IMBA and Portland-based trail

options, such asbuilding "daisy-chain" greenway links to give access to
singletracktrails, following the lead of Seattle's innovative model facility

Portland's bicycling transportation infrastructure will promote "rideto ride"

statement issued today by a new coalition of mountain bikeadvocates Hoping to
join the Platinum party and no longer wanting toplay second fiddle to its
on-street cousin, mountain biking in Portlandis poised for progress.Today, a
coalition of mountain bike advocates who want to bring moreoff-road riding
opportunities to Portland, issued a statementcongratulating the city on its
Platinum award while sounding an alarmthat Portland lacks a "comprehensive
strategy to provide opportunitiesfor off-road cyclists" and that "the mountain
bicycling communitybelieves there is still work to be done." This announcement
shows clear progress in a conversation around mountainbike opportunities in
Portland that has been heating up in recent years. In June of 2006, local
mountain bikers felt snubbed when the PortlandParks and Recreation department
unveiled a 20-year vision that didn'tmention mountain bikes at all.Later that
same month, with Portland's Platinum plans going full steam, the League of
American Bicyclists said "access to singletrack" would bea key criterion for
achieving the coveted award. Also adding urgency to the lack of mountain bike
experiences in Portlandwas an article in the New York Times one year ago that
showcased howseveral other major U.S. cities (but not Portland) had found ways
tobring fat-tired fun to an urban setting.Using that article, and the local
discussion it spurred as ammunition, bike industry employee and former IMBA Board
Member Chris Distefano gavea stirring speech to Portland's Bicycle Advisory
Committee about hisdissatisfaction with Portland's off-road riding
opportunities.(Photo (c) J. Maus)Also last summer, the Portland United
MountainPedalers (PUMP) led local policymakers on a tour of Forest Park -
takingthem down the only quarter-mile of trail in the city built specificallyfor
mountain bikes. So why is Portland so dirt-riding deficient? PUMP has been active
for over 20 years, but, as an all-volunteerorganization that focuses primarily
on rides and trail maintenance, their impact on influencing bureaucrats and
forging necessary politicalalliances has been limited (not to mention that most
of their time hasbeen spent on issues in areas where they ride most often -
usually morethan a hours drive from Portland). The Bicycle Transportation
Alliance (BTA) has the know-how and budget toplay politics with the power
brokers, but they've never really delvedinto the off-road realm. This (yet
unnamed) fledgling coalition - which solidified at the recentOregon Bike Summit
- hopes to fill a void and work with PUMP, IMBA, AltaPlanning, and most likely
Metro and Portland Parks and Recreation tocreate a Portland Mountain Bicycling
Action Plan.According to IMBA trail specialist and member of this new coaltion
JillVan Winkle, IMBA and Alta have both already dedicated professionalresources
to the effort and she hopes to "use that seed [from Alta andIMBA] to get other
contributors on board to be a part of this effort." A group in Seattle created a
mountain bike skills park under an overpassof the I-5 freeway.(Photo: Seattle
LUNAChix/Flickr)Van Winkle says the time has come foraction. "Everyone was
getting exhausted by just saying 'we want moretrails, we want more trails'...we
wanted to take action. Now, withprofessional resources, we can really help move
that forward."Van Winkle - whose husband Chris Bernhardt is a former IMBA
staffer whonow works at Alta's Portland office heading up the firm's new
surfacetrails division - says the group will consider some innovative optionsfor
creating non-pavement riding experiences. These might include: building
"daisy-chain" links that utilize existingunpaved right-of-way to connect riding
areas; following the lead ofSeattle's I-5 Colonnade project that created a
mountain bike skills parkunder a freeway overpass; and working on public/private
partnerships toinclude mountain biking in existing and future parks and open
spaces.According to the statement released today, "These actions could

I just want to share this e-mail exchange with our club as a pat-on-the back to

of you who participate in work parties how much it means in building "punch" to

I just want to thank our involved membership, club volunteers, and our our board

Through our outreach, advocacy, and action we build our credibility, numbers,

Thanks, everyone!

Planning, and most likely Metro and Portland Parks and Recreation to
create a Portland Mountain Bicycling Action Plan.
According to IMBA trail specialist and member of this new coaltion Jill
Van Winkle, IMBA and Alta have both already dedicated professional
resources to the effort and she hopes to "use that seed [from Alta and
IMBA] to get other contributors on board to be a part of this effort."

A group in Seattle created a mountain bike skills park under an overpass
of the I-5 freeway.
(Photo: Seattle LUNAChix/Flickr)Van Winkle says the time has come for
action. "Everyone was getting exhausted by just saying 'we want more
trails, we want more trails'...we wanted to take action. Now, with
professional resources, we can really help move that forward."
Van Winkle - whose husband Chris Bernhardt is a former IMBA staffer who
now works at Alta's Portland office heading up the firm's new surface
trails division - says the group will consider some innovative options
for creating non-pavement riding experiences.
These might include: building "daisy-chain" links that utilize existing
unpaved right-of-way to connect riding areas; following the lead of
Seattle's I-5 Colonnade project that created a mountain bike skills park
under a freeway overpass; and working on public/private partnerships to
include mountain biking in existing and future parks and open spaces.
According to the statement released today, "These actions could produce
substantial new mountain biking facilities for Portland in less than 4
years."
The group hopes to present more details about their plans at the
upcoming meeting of Metro's new Blue Ribbon Committee for Trails.

“We call for better access to city parks and recreation areas for off-road
riding.”
–From a statement issued today by a new coalition of mountain bike advocates
Hoping to join the Platinum party and no longer wanting to play second fiddle to
its on-street cousin, mountain biking in Portland is poised for progress.
Today, a coalition of mountain bike advocates who want to bring more off-road
riding opportunities to Portland, issued a statement congratulating the city on
its Platinum award while sounding an alarm that Portland lacks a “comprehensive
strategy to provide opportunities for off-road cyclists” and that “the mountain
bicycling community believes there is still work to be done.”
This announcement shows clear progress in a conversation around mountain bike
opportunities in Portland that has been heating up in recent years.
In June of 2006, local mountain bikers felt snubbed when the Portland Parks and
Recreation department unveiled a 20-year vision that didn’t mention mountain
bikes at all.
Later that same month, with Portland’s Platinum plans going full steam, the
League of American Bicyclists said “access to singletrack” would be a key
criterion for achieving the coveted award.
Also adding urgency to the lack of mountain bike experiences in Portland was an
article in the New York Times one year ago that showcased how several other
major U.S. cities (but not Portland) had found ways to bring fat-tired fun to an
urban setting.
Using that article, and the local discussion it spurred as ammunition, bike
industry employee and former IMBA Board Member Chris Distefano gave a stirring
speech to Portland’s Bicycle Advisory Committee about his dissatisfaction with
Portland’s off-road riding opportunities.

(Photo © J. Maus)Also last summer, the Portland United Mountain Pedalers (PUMP)
led local policymakers on a tour of Forest Park — taking them down the only
quarter-mile of trail in the city built specifically for mountain bikes.
So why is Portland so dirt-riding deficient?
PUMP has been active for over 20 years, but, as an all-volunteer organization
that focuses primarily on rides and trail maintenance, their impact on
influencing bureaucrats and forging necessary political alliances has been
limited (not to mention that most of their time has been spent on issues in
areas where they ride most often — usually more than a hours drive from
Portland).
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has the know-how and budget to play
politics with the power brokers, but they’ve never really delved into the
off-road realm.
This (yet unnamed) fledgling coalition — which solidified at the recent Oregon
Bike Summit — hopes to fill a void and work with PUMP, IMBA, Alta Planning, and
most likely Metro and Portland Parks and Recreation to create a Portland
Mountain Bicycling Action Plan.
According to IMBA trail specialist and member of this new coaltion Jill Van
Winkle, IMBA and Alta have both already dedicated professional resources to the
effort and she hopes to “use that seed [from Alta and IMBA] to get other
contributors on board to be a part of this effort.”

A friend of mine, Todd Sadow of Epic Rides, is conducting a poll on
what type of trails mountain bikers like best. While it's not
scientific, it could, with enough participation, be used as a
reference for trail planning.

It's a one-question poll, so will take maybe 10 seconds to complete.

Just go to http://www.epicrides.com and click on any of the events.
The poll will be at the bottom right.

Yeah!

So far, we have:

Amy
Susan
Shane
Fred
John Joy
JD
Jordan
Gabrielle
Ron Strasser
(me)
Sharon Sadoval (new - found us on Mtbr) + Hubby
EJ Barret (mtbr)
Nick Kehoe (New - Found the party on our web site!)

For anyone who's not checked it out as Gabrielle, Jordan, and Amy have,
the RSVP function on our ride calendear is awesome! It really helps
build momentum when people see a bunch of other folks coming. Thanks,
Ryan T for giving us that feature!

Can we tempt anyone else with doughnuts, coffee, and a shovel? Newton
Trail (and all those who ride her) would be greatly in your debt
(smile).

>Our efforts on FL5 have turned it into the best conditioned section
>in the park. This provides us the opportunity to give some mountain
>biker love to another fantastic section of often over looked
>singletrack: Newton Road!
>Yes. We will be venturing further into the park to do some
>maintenance, enhancements, and re-routes! Many of you who either
>worked on FL5 or have ridden it since November when PUMP began our
>regular maintenance efforts have noticed the changes we've made on
>that section: addition of serpentines, culverts, drainage
>improvements, etc. which result in an enhanced experience on the
>trail. We will be doing similar projects on the Newton Road section.
>For those of you who've not ventured this far into the park, you
>will be introduced to what is often described as the most fun
>section of singletrack downhill in the park. Our wonderful Trail and
>Restoration Manager from the Forest Park Conservancy, Jeff Hough,
>will be sharing tips on how to incorporate this fabulous section
>into your Forest Park Rides during his orientation briefing after
>sign-in.
>We also have 4 amazing volunteer Team Captains who are volunteering
>extra time to come out on Friday to walk the trail with Jeff & I to
>get section specific training for each part of trail work that needs
>to be accomplished. This will enable our trail party volunteers to
>feel really confident in their trail efforts and have questions
>answered quickly. Thank you so much JD, John Joy, Frank and Shane
>for taking the extra time. If anyone else is interested in doing
>this at future parties, please contact me directly.
>Warning: Advocacy can be addictive!
>So come on out and get addicted with us! Taming a new trail is very
>work intensive and also provides an amazing sense of accomplishment
>when you see what you and 40 other mountain bikers have completed in
>4 short hours. This is a family friendly event, so please bring your
>young bikers, enlist your friends, and come join the party!
>Please RSVP so we can plan the additional work and have enough
>equipment (and pastries) on hand for everyone!
>Event: Newton Road Trail (Build) Party
>Date: Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

>Directions: From Portland drive out Highway 30 and make a right on
>NW Marina Way. *Marina Way is on the North side of the St John's
>Bridge* Cross rail road tracks and park where ever you are able on
>the shoulder. Jeff Hough's Forest Park Conservancy vehicle will be
>in the pole position and will be the meet point.
>Newton Road is directly across Hwy 30 from the meet point (though
>not marked on the map), but has no parking area. For that reason, we
>will be parking on NW Marina and walking over to Newton after sign
>in and orientation.
>Please:
>* RSVP so we can plan work to be done and have enough tools on hand
>for everyone (and pastries!)
>* Thank the folks from Fat Tire Farm, Mtbr, Revolver Bikes, OR Bike,
>OBRA, and Bike Portland.org for not only getting the word out, but
>also putting gloves to shovel and participating in the trial parties.
>* A massive "Thanks" to Forest Park Conservancy who continue to
>provided us with the trail building expertise and equipment with
>Jeff Hough. Please check their website at Forest Park Conservancy to
>join them on other trail maintenance days. They provide fantastic
>opportunities to work shoulder to shoulder and build rapport with
>non-mountain biker user groups. Remember to wear your PUMP t-shirt
>and let everyone know you're a concerned mountain biker!
>Ride-On, PUMPsters!
