EvilSteve, Susan and I went out to the Hamilton Mt Trails yesterday evening to
explore. I've hiked around Hamilton Mt more times than I can remember but had no
idea there were areas we could ride. The map at the trailhead lists them as
trails and the park ranger we spoke to even called them trails, but I'd say
calling them trails is a stretch, they are 100% gravel roads and old double
track. Steve was told there are about 16 miles of "Trails" in the area, but we
weren't sure if that included the hiker only stuff on Hamilton Mountain. We rode
about 8 or 9 miles of road and double track with some very nice views of the
surrounding mts and the Columbia River. Most of the climbing isn't too bad, but
there were some very steep sustained climbs. The tread, for the most part, is
nice but some of it is very rocky. Almost every intersection had a small map
posted, so finding your way around is pretty easy.
There is some trail building going on (true singletrack), but my guess is it
wont be open to mt bikes, just an assumption on my part. This could be a great
opportunity for new mtb trails in the area, the terrain is really nice and the
park seems to be building every time I've been out there.
If you're just looking to get out for a quick ride and don't mind riding double
track, it'd be great, but for somebody looking for single track...I'd go
someplace else.
