Rochester Rhinos News Release - www.rhinossoccer.com

Friday, September 12, 2008

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rhinos welcomed the first place Puerto Rico Islanders to PAETEC Park in a match-up between two playoff bound teams. A 2-0 Puerto Rico victory greatly enhanced their grip on the Commissioner's Cup.

Steele guided Puerto Rico within one point of regular season titleThe Islanders would strike first in the 10th minute. Former Rhino, and the USL's leader in assists, Johnny Steele broke down the left side, capitalizing on a Rochester turnover at midfield, and fed a through ball to Kendall Jagdeosingh, whose one-timer beat Rochester netminder Scott Vallow for a 1-0 Puerto Rico lead.

Rochester outshot Puerto Rico 5-3 in the first half, and nearly tied the match on a rip from just outside the penalty box by Luke Kreamalmeyer that sailed just over the crossbar. The game would go the half with Puerto Rico leading 1-0.

Puerto Rico would increase its lead just eight minutes into the second half. On a set piece from 30 yards out near the right side line, Puerto Rico midfielder, Noah Delgado sent a bending right footed cross into the goal box that found Cristian Arrieta's head perfectly. Arrieta buried the header just inside the left post for a 2-0 Islander lead.

The two goal deficit was too much for the Rhinos as Islander goalkeeper Bill Gaudette recorded his league leading 10th shutout with the Puerto Rico 2-0 victory.

The victory put the Islanders one point from claiming the regular season championship, leading Vancouver by five points. The Whitecaps play host to Montreal Saturday. The top seed in the postseason would give Puerto Rico a bye to the USL-1 Semifinals.

The Rhinos concluded their home game schedule with a 7-3-5 record. The Rhinos conclude their regular season with two away matches, at Carolina on September 12th, and at Miami on September 17th.
