Islanders win USL-1 opener
Friday, April 13, 2007
BAYAMON, PR -- The Puerto Rico Islanders began their USL First Division 2007 campaign with a hard fought 2-1 victory over last year’s finalists Rochester Raging Rhinos in the season-opening match played Friday night at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel in Bayamón, in front of 6,894 fans.
The Islanders made the most of their opportunities to build up a 2-0 lead and then their stingy defense took care of the rest.
The Rhinos are a strong, solid team but the Puerto Rico Islanders were ready for the challenge. In a fast-paced game with both clubs playing attacking soccer, the Islanders were the ones taking the early lead in the 15th minute.
Noah Delgado attempted a shot on goal inside the box, with a Rochester defender clearing the ball. However, Islanders forward Alen Marcina intercepted the ball and blasted one past goalie Scott Vallow for the 1-0 lead.
Rochester tried hard for the equalizer, but efforts by players like Aaran Lines, Matthew Delicate, and Daniel Kramer were not enough. The Islander defense had a huge game and kept the visitors in check. Guys like Raphel Ortiz and Mauricio Segovia, among others, were rock solid. Goalie Josh Saunders made some nice saves also, when he was tested.
The Islanders extended their lead in the 48th minute thanks to a goal by Victor Herrera after a fantastic sequence by both him and Alen Marcina. Marcina’s assist turned out deadly as it went past Vallow, and Herrera just pushed the ball into the empty net.
Rhinos’ attacker Hamed Diallo, who came in as a sub, gave the visitors new life. He also gave them a goal in the 51st minute off a powerful free kick that found its way through the wall from just outside the box to reduce the Islander lead.
The Islanders were determined to maintain the lead, and their defense stepped it up big-time. The Rhinos kept trying and insisting, but Puerto Rico held on strong.
Marco Vélez preserved the lead when, in the 66th minute of play, he cleared a Chris Aloisi close-range header near the goal line. From then on, Rochester looked somewhat deflated. All their efforts could not crack Puerto Rico’s defense and the Islanders eventually shut down the Rhinos and came out winners.
The win is a great start for the 2007 Puerto Rico Islanders, who faced another contender for the USL First Division title and came out victorious in sensational fashion.
