That or instead of spending the $75 on battenkill we each take that cash and own the spring Ninigret races, there are usually a few of them

Weather: 35 degrees and colder since most of the course is in the woods (then
again every year this race is cold)

Attendees: Me

Course: 2.25 mile long with a lot of trail riding, a 90degree starting turn,
lots of gravel, a crazy steep downhill with mud all over and a pit of mud
followed by a steep uphill (not rideable), lots of roots, a double sand pit
(rideable but faster to run), another bumpy downhill into a steep uphill
(rideable but not worth it) and a very wide double barrier section on an uphill
single track section. Fast Course.

Race: Not a great start but then again I hate the gravel sections around the
stupid cement cooking areas. Probably sitting 15 or so. Started to work around
the crowd with an eye on the leaders. Had trouble like usual in the single track
crazy mountain stuff since I am a chicken. Anyway passed away on the guys in
front and was in pretty good spot on lap 3 when the enevitable happened. I
dismounted on the steep downhill and slipped on a ton of roots and rolled back
down. Got passed by a few guys and that was the end of my dream for the podium.
Passed a couple on the line but only finished 7th (although I counted 6th) out
of 40+.

Nice Finish!!!
Even if I wasn't injured this past season, it blows my mind some of us are still racing.  I know, I know its cross...but still...I couldn't imagine keeping a racing level of fitness after the last MTB race or Jamestown this time of year.
4th on Cross still a nice finish.
Oh wait..I hear my mag trainier whispering to me from the basement..."Twenty-Ten is just around the corner...2010..."

Weather: A warm 52 degrees and sunny

Attendees: Me

Course: Starts with a spin around track into a turn around a tree, up a slight incline (muddy and slippery)and over to the back side. Add in a section of 180 degree turns which was muddy, over to the hill with two barriers before a run up (bummer since it was rideable last year), some single track rocky section to a section of off-camber turns down the hill, up a steeper climb (which was ridable), back downhill fast with a 90 degree turn into the woods in the front, some mud, racing on the street pavement, back into the rocky, rooty woods, back down into grass and then back up into woods, and back onto track. Length is about 1.67miles.

Pre-race: Felt tired since I had to pick up my daughter late last night from some party.

Race: Started first row. Slotted in about 8th or so and had no ambitions to go up but didn't want the leaders to pull away. Stayed behind John McGrath for the first lap and a half. Thought to myself, I am high enough up to slide back and finish top 15. But that was not to be. Lap 2, I passed McGrath before the hill and D'alessio (who started like a monster) started to fade quickly and I passed him at the top of the hill. Then I slotted behind Joe Phoenix (who I hate losing to) all the way into the woods but coming out he ran into the tape and that was the last I saw of him. Now I was fourth behind Seth Davis, Marc from Hup and someother Hup guy who was pissing me off. He had trouble in the mud sections and kept unclippingl. Lap 4 I passed him in the woods but got passed by someone I didn't know. The four of us were roughly together now with about 5 seconds between the leader and myself. On the hill on the last lap, I was in too high a gear and had to grind it up. However, that opened too much of a gap and although at the finish in the track I caught up, they were sprinting it out for the victory. 4th out of 90+ (too many basically)

Starting at Fauce Arch 1030 on sat. Horton loop is negotiable, potentially a short Scituate, or a MN Smack Down.

Yes I did 4 races this weekend. The first race each day was the serious one and the second one was for bike handling stuff. It isn't easy getting good cyclocross training in so this was an opportunity. I can't make Northhampton unfortunately so I wanted to double up. Trust me I worked my ass off each day in the first races but the second ones my watts were off 30. However, I felt more comfortable on the bike and that pays big dividends later on.

yeah seriously - if you're racing cross right you shouldn't have enough gas for two races in a day..  at least not a this point of the season, maybe earlier.  Still.  If you can do two, the bottom line is you didn't do one hard enough.

Cross is *fcking hard* seriously.

Course: 1.9 miles around a farm and apple orchards. The rain last night made for some real muddy sections but the grass was fast. some real muddy sections but the grass was fast. Start was downhill into a hard
right into a very muddy dirt section thru the trees (some guys went right into
those trees), then a deep grass full of water section into a very long dirt
downhill with a sharp right at the bottom, some more dirt into a longish uphill
dirt road, dismount up a hill and run the rest, then loop de loops around the
trees, a cornfield with a sharp left into a big puddle, more loop de loops then
an uphill into a dirt road bringing you back to the start which had another
barrier section.

Two Races again

Cat 4 - Not a great start because they had call ups right in front of me and my
biggest challengers were to the side and avoided them. Definitely felt weaker
from yesterday but road ok. Finished 11th out of 40+. Didn't have any real gas
but handled the course nicely.

Cat 3/4 45+ - Started in the back - Was real real tired (again racing back to
back) at this point. Finished back but not sure how back. Should have been top
10 without a prior race. However, at this point I was counting down the laps.

Weather was warm and beautiful.

Attendees: Curtis and Parke in Cat 4

Course: 2.41 mile course which is mostly a power course. Sketchy start turns
into double track dirt to long grass sections into an uphill high barrier
dismount. Back to grass that turns onto a pavement section which is the most
dangerous part due to dirt and mud getting onto it. Then a long pavement section
along the water. Uphill climb to baby barriers and then another section of grass
and dirt with a steep uphill into a dismount hill climb to a run around a
running track into the last technical section then a barrier.

Did two races:

1. Got a decent start and was sixth into the dirt section. Stayed there until
the first barrier section on the second lap where I clipped the second barrier
and my chain fell off. Lost about 7 or 8 spots to guys I am usually stronger
than and they were up about 15 seconds before I could start going. Finished 15
out of 130+.

2. Master 45+ - STarted ok but this race was right after the other one and I
couldn't get the heart rate up until lap 2 or so. Faded back and finished
exactly mid pack.

I'm not going - and am going to cancel the announcements pending light.

If there is interest we can discuss having another ride, night time bike path, or short hillside loop on tuesday night.

But the Smack Down, (mark's route) is over.  Jamestown ended the season, time for cross.

Order now for overnight from Wheels MFG.
They ship out at 3pm, so you'd need to move fast and pray there isn't any
screw-up.

I won't be there today. I've been doing a ride on the weekend with a friend who climbs like a mother. I'll post when we are going next if anybody wants to come along and get dropped on the hills like me.

But it would be good to do it - tone the ride down now that it is off season - or maybe keep it fired up at least to get those who are going to go to Jamestown.

If anyone can go - pick a short loop (Hillside hill for example) and do that.  Start from Faunce 5pm.  No Atwells.

Maybe Aaron or Kirk or someone can lead the ride.

Quick Follow up.

Course set up is scheduled to start around 10am and go until about 3pm both days (Tues and Wed).  If you can spare an hour or to to help tape, stake, or what ever else needs to be done it would be awesome.

Also if you can spare time on Sat or Sun they still need volunteers:

We need people to help with:
  • set up on Tuesday 6th/Wednesday 7th
  • registration
  • parking
  • Expo gate
  • course marshals
  • med. grips / official's assistants
  • course repair
  • course tear down (11th and 12th)
If you think you can help - please send Gene Petrella an email: ecpetrella@...

_Thanks again_

If anyone has some time Tuesday or Wednesday and would love to help make the biggest cycling event in Providence this year happen more smoothly can you let me know?

Email me and I will put you in touch with the proper folks.

The volunteer response has been pretty low this year, so any help you can offer would be great.
