The Potomac Polo Club Team will be playing in the finals of the 2005
USPA 4-goal Player's Cup on Sunday the 18th of September at 12
Noon. We'd be delighted to have our friends and students of the
Potomac Polo School attend and cheer us on to victory. The match
will be held at the former Potomac Polo Club fields on Hughes Road.
Historically, this is an interesting facility. Originally owned,
designed and built by Mary's father Big Joe Muldoon on what were
corn fields, the club in its 1980's heyday hosted high goal
tournaments in front of thousands of spectators. Big Joe
constructed nine 11 acre polo fields at the site. Consider that
most clubs are happy to have one field and you can begin to
understand the magnitude of the Potomac Polo Club operation that he
created. The most elite corporate sponsors like Rolex and Rolls
Royce and some of the greatest polo players of the day were found at
the old grounds of the Potomac Polo Club. During this period, the
Muldoon family captured most of the prestigious USPA tournament
championships along the Atlantic Coast. Each player, Mary, Big Joe,
Joe III and Charlie went on to distinguish themselves in the sport
and the historical records of the USPA. The USPA Blue Book contains
listings of many of the championships that they have captured over
the years. The old polo grounds at Hughes Road have been sold with
only three fields of the nine original fields still active; the
grandstands, announcers, field side bar and celebrity players like
Tommy Lee Jones and Stephanie Powers are long gone; and the fields
no longer resonate to the cheers of thousands of fans. But this
weekend, once again Potomac Polo returns to its former home and we
hope to win the 2005 Player's Cup in front of our own enthusiastic
fans.
Today, Potomac Polo is based on three, beautiful full-sized fields,
two outdoor arenas, one indoor arena and one stadium-sized grass
field we maintain off of Beallsville Road. The Potomac Polo School
remains the leading training facility for new players in the US and
the Potomac Polo Team has been reinvigorated through the efforts of
Mary and Team Red Eagle Ranch supporting her brother Joe III. This
year saw the return of very large, high end polo events at Potomac
Polo, which included the Courage Cup and the Ambassador's Cup. We
look forward to the continued growth of the Club and welcome new
members for the coming 2006 season.
We hope to see you out there with us, this weekend and in the future.
