The second match of the fall leauge was a tough defensive battle
between Black (Ryan, Marcos, and Dante) versus Red (Asmeen, Jim,
Julia). Black took a fast lead off the throw in and scored the
first goal but that was immediately neutralized on the next throw in
with a goal from Red. The play was pretty exhaustive in that first
chukker, which ended with Julia picking up two goals, one for Jim
and one apiece for Dante and Ryan. With Red ahead 3-2 black tried
to even things up in the second period but to no avail. Dante picked
up another goal but that was offset by Asmeen's score. After
halftime Red retained the lead, now 4-3. Black shut out the Red
team in the decisive third chukker as Marcos and Ryan each notched a
goal. Entering the fourth chukker, Red continued to apply pressure
as Jim scored once again, but Marcos cracked the tie and picked up
the game winning goal. Ryan had some amazing plays on offense and
her two goals only provide a glimpse of how significant her
contributions actually were. Both teams played tough with every
player scoring at least one goal, which is kind of fun if you ask
me. And I can't remember being more exhausted after a polo match.
Either that play was tougher than usual or that week off sipping
wine in California made me soft (probably a little of both!). In
anycase, everyone played well with good teamwork and minimal
fouling. Capt. Kerry work ever so hard to assist with pre-match
tacking and miscellaneous support. We really appreciate her
enthusiasm. Paul Carey provided exceptional digital photography
from the sidelines and we'll be updating the wesite soon with his
photos. As always Mary did a fine job of umpiring. Most Valuable
Player was Julia Smith. Even though her team came up just short of
the win, she played very strongly and was a pleasure to watch as she
deftly handled her horses and the ball. My number one mount,
Cebolla was selected as Best Playing Polo Pony. Next match of the
Fall League is November 9th--We'll see you all out there.
