This week in Polo, August 4th 2003   Message List

This past week was another great time to be alive and playing polo.
For those who got out and played we had lots of action on Wednesday
night, Thursday night and all day Saturday. Sunday was a well-
deserved day of rest (especially after a late night at Dr. Chang's
most excellent party on Saturday).

Marcos and Julia appear to be vying for Player of the Month. Both
are putting in a lot of time at the Ranch and they are getting very
good. So good that I'd like to be on a league team with them this
fall—ah, I can see the trophy presentation now…

Anyway, Saturday was a lot of fun with thre classes and more new
students in the late afternoon plus an awesome mountain bike polo
match in the Red Eagle Arena after we dismounted from our horses.
Devorah, Kevin, Gary (Kevin's very fit and sporty dad) and I had a
hard and driving match filled with some good plays and some nasty
crashes (by me!). But of course the focus at Red Eagle is horses
and there was plenty of fun polo that day. This week coming should
be great and remember, in August there are no official classes on
Sundays (since Sunday, Wednesday and Friday are when Mary and I get
to play polo!); however, we still have a full schedule for Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday. Red Eagle Polo Team will be back in action
this week after a one week hiatus. If you'd like to see us
scrimmage be sure to check with Mary for the schedule.

We are pleased that the new road in back of the polo barn is almost
complete. We're sure that everyone will really enjoy the upgrade.
We continue with other upgrades as we move through the season. Our
resident 3-goaler from Chile, Luis, has left for vacationing in New
York City. We just heard from his last night and he's having a lot
of fun partying in Manhattan. How could he not? He'll be traveling
to the beach in Hawaii next and we look forward to him returning to
Red Eagle in the future. People have commented on how much they
like the website and we appreciate the comments. Of course we
haven't made any major upgrades this summer because we are so busy
with polo. But fear not because we are continuing to collect lots
of photos and video footage. Eventually there will be a day raining
enough to slow us down and we'll hit the web pages. But until then
there is only time for polo and Coronas.

There are about 4 weeks left before we start finalizing the fall
league. This will be the final opportunity of the year for advanced
and intermediate players to get their jersey's on and play some real
polo for four chukkers with several mounts. Don't sit around
thinking about it or rationalizing why you should wait until next
year---get out and play. This is what going to polo school is all
about—to play under real competition conditions. You can call Mary
at any time within the next four weeks and express your interest in
the league. We are now accepting deposits for entry. This league
promises to be the best ever since our current group of players is
extremely motivated and talented. We had three teams last fall and
could certainly field that many again or even more this year. Some
people have been hesitant in the past because they have other
engagements to attend to on the weekends. Whoa, what's that all
about? C'mon, get serious about polo or take up bowling!

With respect to the league and fashion. You can't possibly show up
without a real jersey so if you don't have a few you had better get
on it and order today. I am placing an order for almost $1,000
worth of t shirts and jerseys this week. Thank you to everyone who
paid in advance; and for those that didn't you can order with the
next group. Please get in touch with me this week (and bring a
check) if you want to add your request to this order.

We at Red Eagle make tremendous efforts to ensure that you can fit
your other life (we understand, really we do) into your polo life.
We do a lot to make sure that the horses are super fit and league
dates are flexible to a limited degree such that almost everyone who
wants can play in the game. But you do have to remember that this
is polo and in real polo once the tournament dates are fixed you
either show up or you miss the match. This year's league will again
be responsive to student requests and with three or more teams we'll
have the ability to be somewhat responsive to reasonable requests
but we've set a hard end date (Thanksgiving) so that you know the
boundaries on how long the league will last and we will set firm
league dates once everyone weighs in with there preferences.

Looking ahead to the fall, we'll not only have the league but also
several one-day tournaments for various levels of play. This should
be a great second half to the summer so keep coming out and playing
with us. We'll see you in the arena.
