Polo this week, 07 July 2003   Message List

We hope everyone had an excellent holiday weekend, despite the near
100 degree F heat. The Potomac Polo School was closed but that
didn't mean there was any rest for the Red Eagle Polo Team. We
were
quite busy playing over the past several days and definitely had a
great time. Due to vagaries of handicapping and such I ended up
playing with Charlie, who had fun coaching me on the fly and was
super--but unfortunately against Mary, which was very tough for four
chukkers yesterday. Houdini, Rosia, Durasno and Cebolla provided
the motors for me and held up in the heat. But Mary and her team
pretty much ran away with it. Playing without your regular
teammates can be tough. That's why our student leagues are such
a
great opportunity to form a team and learn each other's strengths
and weaknesses. Only then can you operate as a single entity and
really control the field.

We want to encourage every student to visit the USPA website and
sign up as a student member. This is a great way to get active in
the USPA at a fraction of the cost $35 versus $200. Many of our
newer students have a limited knowledge of the history of polo and
membership in the USPA can really help in that area, plus there are
quite a few useful benefits. You'll also learn just how awesome
and
accomplished Mary and the entire Muldoon family are in the polo
world. Many of you know about Charlie as a world-class polo
professional having completed in the World Cup, US Open, Gold Cup
among others. But did you know that Mary, Charlie, Joe and her
father have won and completed in countless USPA sanctioned national
tournaments? In fact, Mary and her family were the first all-family
team to win a USPA sanctioned national tournament, the Association
Cup (Mary has actually won the Association Cup two times!). And
just try to count the number of tournaments that she's competed
in.
But there's so much more to learn and appreciate that it makes
sense
to join even in midseason and really become knowledgeable about
polo.

We'll have classes on Tuesday and Thursday this week as well as
the
weekend. The league game on Sunday may be pushed out one more week
to accommodate on of the players. Mary will contact those involved
to confirm.

We hope that you are rested a ready for more polo this week.
We'll
see you out there.

END
