Had a similar problem and found that the advance retard mech. was starting to get sticky. Six screws and one bolt had the thing out and i cleaned the piviots...
have u cleaned the air filter???? also check that the crankcase breather hose isnt blocked u can find it under the cardie coming out of the engine regards...
Ian, check all of the electrical connections inside the headlight bucket and make sure they are all plugged in tight...you may have a loose connection...
