Saturday 3rd September
THE FOREST WAY A train assisted ride. We'll catch the train from East
Croydon to East Grinstead and cycle through the medieval town to pick up the
Forest Way bridle path. It's an old railway line and the surface is normally
excellent for cycling unless there has been very heavy rainfall. The route
is part of Sustrans NCN21 of which we have already recently ridden both ways
up the Waterlink Way. Perhaps we can complete the route to Eastborne over a
series of different rides!
There will be a lunch stop at Groombridge and then we will return the way we
came. The train costs £7.00 return but we can use the Group Save offer (4
tickets for the price of 2) which can reduce the price as low as £3.50 each.
25 easy miles in total. Led by Mark 07711 688189 or email
mark@...
What will it be like? Easy, flat (well, one hill) and slow. Nearly all
traffic-free.
Where? Meet 09:20 for a 09:30 depart from outside Pollards Hill Library on
South Lodge Avenue to catch the 10:10 from East Croydon (or meet us at the
station - call first). Back by 17:30
==
Don't forget Neil's afterworker this Wednesday to Hampton Pool. 18:30 at
Pollards Hill library or outside Wimbledon station for a 19:15 away.
And we have the improved Mitcham Circular family-friendly ride on Sunday
4th. 13:30 outside the library for an easy 13 miles with a snack stop at
either Merton Abbey Mills or Deen City Farm.

UP TO DOWNE
17 people turned up at Pollards Hill library for a day of glorious cycling
around the Kent countryside. Another 6 joined at Thornton Heath station
making for a total of 23 riders of all ages and abilities.
Unfortunately, this number turned out to be a bit unwieldy. Even with Colin
Wing doing an excellent job of backmarker, we still managed string out over
a huge distance right from the start. This inevitably slowed us down and we
were not making good time, even by the time we got to South Norwood Country
Park, 5 miles into the ride.
The steady climb through the housing estates on the urban part of the
Waterlink Way to the top of Spout Hill took its toll on 2 riders who opted
to spin round and go home after a respectable 8.5 miles of climbing. The
fast descent and the subsequent climb at New Addington somehow managed to
lose a portion of the riders who resurfaced near Addington High School. I
started to worry about how we were going to manage to complete the route on
time or even get to our lunch stop on time. After a nifty little route on a
bridle path, courtesy of Sustrans Ranger Jim (I would have stayed on the
road but it was a great route), we pulled in to the White Bear at
Fickleshole and decided to change lunch to the Old Ship in Tatsfield instead
of trying to reach Downe and skip the elevenses at the Gator Café.
Unfortunately, despite being a pretty pub, the Old Ship is very badly run.
They only had one person manning the kitchen on Bank Holiday Monday! There
was an hour wait for food and then the manager decided he didn't want to
serve us because he didn't know we were coming and he couldn't cope! So,
nine of us had to backtrack for 2 miles to the Botley Hill Farmhouse pub who
had told us they would have no problem serving food to us. Instead of an
hour, food was arriving within 10 minutes. It's a busy but very pleasant pub
and had a top class band playing in the beer garden. Highly recommended.
Once we had regrouped at Tatsfield, 5 faster riders decided to make a break
for it and Mike led them back the way we came and out through Chelsham and
up to his house for a quick cuppa before riding back to Pollards Hill. They
averaged 16-17mph on the way back and covered about 35 miles.
The remainder of us ploughed on to Downe, saw Charles Darwin's house, had a
photostop in the village and then rode through the undulating lanes to West
Wickham where 3 opted to get a train from Hayes station. That left 13 of us
to trundle along the busy B251 to Kelsey Park for an ice cream and cake
stop. Suitable refreshed we came back via Elmers End to South Norwood
Country Park and then back the way we came.
Several people had never done a ride of this length before so
congratulations for getting round in one piece. 34 miles from Pollards Hill
(38 for those that had to go back to Botley Hill for lunch). Out for about
8.5hrs. Beautiful scenery!
(Lambeth, Merton & Croydon LCC people: If you want to keep in touch about
future rides, please join our Yahoo group via the link on the PHC website.
If the rides continue to get more popular we may have to restrict the
advertising of some of the rides to the e-list so we can manage them a bit
easier.)

Subject: Evening bike ride next Wednesday to Bushy Park/Hampton Pool: 7.15
pm
Hi all,
This is just a quick, pre-bank-hol-weekend reminder of next Wednesday's
evening ride.
The plan is to leave Wimbledon station at 7.15pm (and not half past as
previously stated).
Should be a nice, late summer's ride through the parks, commons, and
riparian cycle paths of South West London culminating in a floodlit swim at
the heated, open-air Hampton pool and/or a drink in the riverside pub by
Hampton Court Bridge.
The pace will be gentle and there's a direct train back to Wimbledon from
Hampton Court station so should be a relaxing, hassle-free trip.

Dear all,
I am planning an MCC evening bike ride on Wednesday 31st
August from Wimbledon Station (7pm) to Hampton outdoor swimming pool (on the
edge of Bushy Park).
The route will be mainly 'traffic free' taking in some great
scenery in Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, the Thames towpath and the Bushy
Park.
We'll end at the famous Hampton pool; the only heated (and
floodlit) outdoor pool in Britain which stays open 365 days/year! There's a
great terrace café overlooking the pool so non-swimmers can enjoy the
atmosphere too.
It's only about 10-12 miles to Hampton and we'll be going at
a nice leisurely pace. We can put our bikes on the train for the journey
home (Fulwell and Hampton Court stations are 10 minutes' ride away) or you
can cycle home if keen!
Hope to see a few of you there (and we're also hoping to be
joined by some of the Pollards Hill cyclists).
Cheers.
Neil

Up to Downe - an all day ride. Join us on a steady climb to the top of the North Downs using parts of the Waterlink Way. We will stop for elevenses at the Gator Cafe, part of the Beaver Water World reptile zoo and then ride up to the historic village of Downe, soon to be a World Heritage Site, for lunch. 32 miles Hilly but easy. Anyone of average fitness will manage this ride. Expect to ride fairly slowly or wait at the top of the hills for the rest of us. Mostly roads with short sections on prepared tracks.
I fancy doing an off-road ride on Sat 3rd Sept. Either catch a train to Box
Hill and ride along the Pilgrims Way and then on the future Sustrans route
to Shere in the beautiful Surrey Hills or get a train to Three Bridges and
ride along the Worth Way and the Forest Way, both of which are former
railway lines. The first option is hilly, the second is flat. Both are good
surfaces if it hasn't been raining.
Drop me a line and let me know if you fancy one or the other and we'll do
the most popular ride. I'll stick it on the website on Tuesday.

Sustrans are the people responsible for the National Cycle Network (Wandle
Trail, Waterlink Way etc) and this year they are celebrating completing
10,000 miles of cycle routes. Part of the celebrations is a series of rides
over the weekend of Sept 10-11, one of which is a 2-day ride from London to
Cambridge for a cycling festival. Full details are at:
http://www.sustrans.org.uk/default.asp?sID=1090917618220
Sustrans would like you to register if you wish to go on the ride. They are
starting from the Tower Bridge area around 9:30am on the morning of the 10th
and the first day's ride is along the National Cycle Network to Stansted.
Those only wishing to ride for one day can catch a train back to Liverpool
St from here. I reckon you'll cover around 40 miles at a steady pace.
I have been on a Sustrans ride before and you can expect the company of up
to 80 other cyclists on a highly organised and professional ride. There will
possibly be a couple of civic receptions along the way and some free nibbles
and drinks. However, on the ride I went on they failed to stop for lunch,
hoping that the free food at one of the stops was going to suffice. Take
sandwiches!

Five of us enjoyed a relaxed ride in the sunshine up to Greenwich today.
Once we had cleared Thornton Heath, we picked up the Waterlink Way at South
Norwood Country Park. From here, it links a series of parks and riverside
paths to form a mostly traffic-free route up to the Thames at Greenwich. It
is part of Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 21 which leads from
Greenwich to Eastbourne.
Our next ride, which is on Bank Holiday Monday, will pick up the Waterlink
Way at South Norwood Country Park again but this time head south and climb
up towards the North Downs, although we stick to the roads and break off
towards Downe once we reach Fickleshole. We'll do a train-assisted ride at
some point to some other parts of this route, probably starting at Three
Bridges and then using the old railway routes that now form the Worth Way
and the Forest Way, maybe even going as far as the Cuckoo Trail.
For a full report on today with pictures and details of future rides, have a
gander at the website.
Cheers

See below for a message from Charlie. Dr Bike is a great way of getting small repairs done for free. Clapham Common is a nice ride if you go from the library – go up towards Streatham Common station and turn at Norman’s Corner. Follow the road, cycle straight over the junction, go past the athletics track and eventually you’ll come to Tooting Common. Take the cycle lane through the common and you’ll pop out on London Cycle Route 5 which is signed to Clapham Common. Only 4 or so miles. Get your bike ready for the 32 miler on Bank Holiday Monday!

Howdy Mark and All,
Unfortunately i cannot make any of the scheduled rides this week, however, should your machine be in need of any maintenance get down to CLAPHAM COMMON, BANDSTAND (beside the cafe) on SAT. 27th AUGUST or up to BROCKWELL PARK on SUN. 28th AUGUST (outside the Cafe at the top of the hill - beside the basketball court) from 12.00 - 15.00 where I shall be running DOCTOR BIKESURGERIES!
These surgeries are FREE health checks for your bicycle. Minor repairs such as punctures, brake blocks and cables replacement, chain lubrication and gear re-alignment can be carried out.
These sessions can get busy but enjoy a short ride out and arrive early. First come first served.
I've just added a new ride in for Sun 4th Sept, another afternoon explore of
the beautiful routes around Mitcham based on the ride we did on July 31st
but with less barriers. We'll also visit a couple of new places - the lovely
Mitcham Garden Village and the eco-village at BedZed. We can contrast those
with the new apartments at Merton Abbey Mills which I don't care for but
have just won a national award for best development. At least they put a
cycle path in!! It'll be about 12 - 13 miles and as before, any supervised
kids will also be welcome. We will also (hopefully) be joined by a
journalist from The Post who will cover the ride for a story in the paper!
Reminders:
Tomorrow, Waterlink Way to Greenwich and back. Great route linking up
several parks and following the course of the Ravensbourne river. 10:30
outside the library. One keen person is even renting a bike to come out on
this one!
Bank Holiday Monday (29th Aug). Up to Downe, a hilly but easy all day ride
out to the chocolate box village of Downe in Kent. 32 miles, 09:15 outside
the library.
Wed 31st Aug. Neil's afterworker ride to the outdoor heated pool at Hampton.
I'll lead a ride from the library up to the start at Wimbledon, leave 18:30
from outside the library.
If none of those take your fancy, let me know what kind of rides you'd like
and we'll add them in. Off road for anyone? A bit of mud and countryside?
Cheers

Weather.com says it's going to be sunny and we've got a couple of great
rides to choose from this weekend!
There's a feeder ride on Saturday to meet up with the Lambeth Cyclists on
their monthly architecture ride where they will visit buildings in central
London associated with John Nash. That includes Buckingham Palace amongst
others. See the page on their website for more details:

9:45am outside the library if you fancy it - we'll catch the train up to the
start point.
On Sunday we have a ride to Greenwich using the Waterlink Way. This is a
great route that links up a series of parks from South Norwood Country Park
pretty much right up to the Cutty Sark. We'll stop off for a couple of hours
in Greenwich. I'll be having pie & mash for those who want to join me! But
feel free to do whatever takes your fancy - check out the market, laze in
the park or visit the Maritime museum. Then we'll re-group and head back the
way we came. Lots of traffic free parts and all on tarmac. 26 miles. Depart
at 10:30 from outside Pollards Hill Library on South Lodge Avenue, back by
17:00.
Full details of all rides are on http://www.pollardshillcyclists.org.uk
A quick hello to our new members. We had a lot of interest after the great
article in the Mitcham, Morden & Wimbledon Post. For those who didn't see
it, they ran a copy of the picture of everyone at Carshalton Ponds, the one
you can see on the website and plugged the bank holiday ride.
Did anyone go on the CTC ride on Sunday? Let me know what it was like if you
did.

I've just been up to Fruitstock (it's a 2 day event) for a look and it is
well worth going if there are any floating voters out there needing a bit of
11th hour convincing. Plenty of samples at the food and drink stalls, tons
for kids to do, funky jazzy music on the outdoor stage, nice laid back vibe,
about 25000 people there and at least 400 have turned up on their bikes. The
organisers have provided bike parking for around 350 bikes with security
looking after them but lots of people have tied to railings as well.
About 10 miles from Pollards Hill library. The route is fairly quiet, across
Tooting Common, Clapham Common, Battersea Park to Chelsea bridge and past
Buckingham Palace before weaving up to Regents Park. All tarmac. Go on -
meet up with Mike at midday tomorrow and enjoy a great day out!
I'm going to put a new ride up later tonight. Merton Cycling Campaign are
doing an evening ride on Aug 31 to Hampton Pool
<http://www.hamptonpool.co.uk/> for a swim or a drink. It's an outdoor
heated pool in Bushy Park near Hampton Court. The ride leaves from outside
Wimbledon station but I'm hoping to be able to lead a feeder ride up to meet
them. Will be at a steady pace and we'll probably get a train back to
Wimbledon afterwards. I think it's a great destination. I'll probably
organise a Sunday family ride out there as well at some point.

Hello everyone,
I've changed the settings of the Yahoo Group so that all replies go
direct to the sender, not the entire group. That means you don't all
have to read mails that were only meant to go to me! ;-)
Hope to see some of you Tuesday night?
Cheers

That's really encouraging. I do hope someone comes forward for 7 August - if you don't have anyone by the middle of the week, let me know and I'll see if I can contact a paid leader, for which we'll find a way of covering the costs.
I noticed you had contacted Mike from the Disability Forum - again I hope he comes up with a willing volunteer to formally complain about the access barriers on this route. I think they have a meeting tonight (will check) so he may well put the issue forward then. Did you keep any sort of note of where the barriers are? Also do you have a map of your route? (This might be useful for the Cycling for Health rides in the future)
Mark
That is brilliant!!! I am using the photo on our Newsletter!!! Is this OK???
I may get into this cycle ride tomorrow - I may borrow our pool bike and
from Crystal palace I could go home and come on the bike next day!! I will
how I feel!!!!
Nice to see that you have a full programme of rides for this month!!
CONGRATULATIONS!

Park, Carew Manor, a tea break at Honeywood, Carshalton Ponds and then up
the Wandle Trail to Deen City Farm where we took another tea break. After
that it was home through Myna Close Linear Nature Park which was a new route
for virtually everyone and the quickest way to get from Colliers Wood to
Mitcham. 80% traffic-free.
There's a full report with pictures on the website.
Next ride: Tues 2nd August - Leisurely afterworker to Crystal Palace. A
quick lap of the park, take in the dinosaurs and maybe some of the pro cycle
racing if it is on and then down the pub. All downhill on the way back!
Under 10 miles total. Meet 7pm outside Pollards Hill library on South Lodge
Ave, Mitcham. Bring lights.
New ride: Mon 29th August - Bank Holiday Special! Up to Downe. A gentle
climb up the North Downs, elevenses at Gator Café inside the reptile zoo,
lunch at Downe and home in time for tea. 32 miles. Meet 9am for a 9:15 away
outside Pollards Hill library.

Hello Mark
sorry I didn't have your mobile number to let you know I decided to take the train back home from Carshalton Beeches. My eight-year old had an upset stomach, so I decided it was best not to chance it - my only regret is I didn't take your mobile number to let you know and I had your map.
I hope the rest of your ride was enjoyable - I certainly enjoyed the small part of the lap we did and will try to join in on some of your other events.
Do you need your map and how can I return it to you?
24 people, 21 machines, 13 miles, 4 hours, 1 puncture!
An excellent start to our full rides programme. Thanks to everyone who came
along. We had great weather for cycling, warm but not blazing sun. Progress
was slow due to the abundance of anti-motorbike barriers on the local cycle
tracks but we had an enjoyable day, taking in Mitcham Common, Beddington
Park, Carew Manor, a tea break at Honeywood, Carshalton Ponds and then up

Subject: [Pollards Hill Cyclists] The inaugural Pollards Hill Cyclists
ride!
A couple of hardy souls braved the uncertain skies and the drizzle to head
out on the inaugural Pollards Hill Cyclists ride to Richmond tonight. Paulo
Camara from Merton Council came down to see us off. A change to the route to
take advantage of the tail wind meant skipping Wimbledon Common and heading
straight to Richmond Park. After a nice ride over the top of the park on
National Cycle Network Route 4 (with plenty of baby deer for company!) we
dropped into Ham and along the river only to find it was such a high tide
that the path was submerged. Undeterred, we headed back to the Ham Brewery
Tap (cycle-friendly pub - 6 bikes inside and out!) and had a pleasant drink
in the beer garden. We came back through Richmond Park and along the A3
cycle path to Putney Heath and then alongside the Common to Wimbledon
Village and down the London Cycle Network back roads to Merton Abbey and
home through the Myna Close Linear Nature Park. 3 hours door to door. About
25 miles. Original route will be posted on the website soon.
Next ride is the slow, flat, 12 mile explore of the quiet roads and
traffic-free paths around Mitcham. Afternoon ride. Leaves from outside
Pollards Hill library on South Lodge Avenue this Sunday at 1pm. Come and
join us!

RICHMOND RIVERSIDE The Inaugural Ride! Afterworker - Ride through quiet roads and traffic free paths to Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, Ham House and enjoy a drink at the riverside in Richmond. Approx 25 miles. Led by Mark 07711 688189 or email mark at pollardshillcyclists.org.uk What will it be like? We will need to average 10mph on this ride so realistically you need to be comfortable cycling along at 13mph on the roads. The track on Wimbledon Common is very gravelly so road bikes won't be much use. Hybrids or chunky wheels are your best bet. A couple of hills. 16+ ONLY
