I've been asked by a couple of people about bike insurance following on from
my mail about locking your bike properly.
Most cycle groups recommend http://www.cycleguard.co.uk although this could
be because they pay up to £10 for referrals. PHC is not part of this scheme,
simply because they charge a fee to consider your application to become an
affiliate.
A £500 bike (includes components) for someone living in the Pollards Hill
postcode of CR4 1 costs £38 a year. A £200 bike costs you £20.
If you are a homeowner, check the wording of your contents insurance. Mine
can be extended to include bicycles but is more expensive than Cycleguard.
Some include bikes away from the home as part of the policy. If your bike is
stolen from your shed or garage and the thieves break in then you are almost
certainly covered on your contents insurance.
Report any theft to the police and get a reference number for the crime from
them.
I had a reply from Nick Tittle about his cycle theft focus group but he
didn't give me any details about his plans. Once I have those, I'll report
back and then we can see who fancies meeting up with the police to discuss
ways they can prevent cycle theft.
