Only one ride this weekend - but to a classic cycling destination. Join John
on his all day ride out to Fanny's Farm in Merstham, a ramshackle
smallholding presided over by the inimitable Fanny Maiklem and a motley
assortment of barnyard animals running loose amongst the squashes, dahlias
and boxes of homemade fudge. Maybe she'll let everyone use her treehouse?
On the way out there will be a brief tea and cake stop at Croydon Airport,
arguably the birthplace of modern civil aviation. It's a fascinating place
and worthy of a longer visit than we have time for.
You'll be at Fanny's in time for a late lunch but be warned, you are limited
to ploughmans or cakes. If that's not to your liking, bring cold pasties or
dive out early at the White Hart and miss out on the homegrown goodies in
the farm shop.
The return is all downhill. So, expect a steady climb on the way out with
one steep hill. Some off-road sections that might be a bit muddy but aren't
too lumpy. But mostly on roads.
6th Nov: Departs 09:45 from outside the library on South Lodge Ave. Back by
5pm. Bring lights. 27 miles in total.
