RIDE REPORT: John's Midnight Ride 10/06/06
Although the weather last Sat was very agreeable, only 3 riders turned up
for PHC's "after-hours" ride over Wimbledon Common. The meet was at 9pm,and
we planned to be out perhaps up to midnight!! We proceeded via the slopes of
Leopold Rd and traversed the Common through the middle of the fairground!
After a quick spin along Windmill Rd ( with the leader trying to fix his
dodgy front lamp) we soon reached the "twin peaks" near the windmill where
(to the sound of guns shooting!) we partook of refreshment for 30 mins. In
spite of the near full moon inviting us to be idle for longer, we pressed on
through a little-used subway that bisects the common and ends up at
Roehampton Lane. A quick turn south alongside the A3 (where a creditable
speed downhill was reached) and we were soon on the return route via Raynes
Park and Merton Abbey, where the leader retired home leaving the remainder
to plough home back to Streatham/Pollards Hill. The highlight of such rides
is that one can be "at one" with nature sometimes, and this happened when we
almost bumped into a badger who was loitering near the path through Malden
golf course.
Out for 2.5 hrs with 16 miles on the computer...........
