Neil,
The trail that goes through the aspens is now signed as non
motorized so no motor vehicles are allowed. This trail is not on the new travel
management map so I need to find out whether it should even exist for any
users. The no motor vehicles will be enforced because that area is getting torn
up fairly bad by motorcycles, atvs and trucks. There has not been any signage
until now on that trail so I really can’t blame motorcyclists for riding it. I
have been letting motorcyclists of the closure and the reason for it and all of
them have been understanding. It was just a bad place for a trail due to the
amount of water in that area. I will be out there patrolling in the truck, on an
atv and on a dirtbike to make sure people are not riding it. The road that
parallels the single-track through the aspens seems to be the main route
between Peavine and the dog valley area so it gets quite a bit of use. There is
also plenty of great motorcycle single-track less than a mile from that area
which we will be adding to for motorized use.
The other trail you are talking about is the one that goes down
into Sommersett I think. The bottom part of this trail is on private property
and the top part is on forest service land. I can’t remember if this trail is
on the map as non motorized or if it is multi use. I will need to double check
that and get back to you. If it is multi use motorized I agree that something
should be done but I will have to talk to the boss and see what we can do. That
trail is all off camber and will probably turn into a stream during rain or
spring time runoff.

Great work,
Andrew. All of us who ride bikes on Peavine welcome your efforts. I hope all of
the motorized users feel the same.
I don't wish this email to set off a round of bitching and moaning about
biyclists vs. motorcyclists, but your signage for a couple of trails brings to
mind a some of questions. My understanding of that single track through the
aspens is that it was created by motorcycles. Given that fact (if it is, in
fact, a fact) how do you propose to keep them off of it? In the same vein, Bull
Creek Ranch trail, which existed as approximately the same route for as long as
I have been riding it (10+ years) and probably considerably longer despite
shared use by motorcycles and bicycles, was thoroughly abused by motorcyclists
this past winter and spring; the upper third of the trail is almost unridable
in sections. Are there any meetings you are aware of that are planned with
motorcycle groups and other users regarding the use and rehabilitation of this
formerly great trail?
Again, thanks for your work.
Neil Crowley

Some of you may have noticed the new signs or a green Forest
Service truck driving around on Peavine. That is me driving around in that
truck putting up signs. I also have the duty of making sure the motorized
vehicles are following the rules such as staying on the correct trails and
having a spark arrestor. I have met a few of you out on the trails when I am
working out there. Basically I am sending out this e-mail to let everyone know
what is going on with the “magically appearing signs”. Eventually the hope is
to have all of the roads and trails signed and have a network of trails for
both motorized and non-motorized use. Unfortunately some people like to use
these signs as targets for shooting or run them over with their vehicle.
Unfortunately I can not be everywhere at once so if you see any of the new
signs that been destroyed or damaged just let me know. There are still some old
signs that have not been replaced yet and hopefully these will be replaced
soon.
You may have also noticed that the single-track on the east side
of Peavine is all non motorized and the single-track on the west side just east
of the California border is all motorized. In between these two areas is a
single-track, which parallels Forest Road 41419 (it goes west from just below
the summit, commonly used to access cow canyon from the main fire road to the
top of Peavine), and goes through some aspens and through Bull Ranch Creek.
This single-track has been signed as non motorized and it would probably be a
good idea to walk the mountain bikes through the muddy sections to minimize
ruts.
If anyone has any concerns or comments on any of the trails
on Peavine, just let me know.
