Thank you so much for the information Rose. I will keep this and print it out for me. :) I spoke to a lady where I may board the new horse I am hoping to get about bare foot keeping-and do you know, she keeps all her horses that way! She actually trims them herself and showed me all her new equipment that she uses. Her one horse was always in shoes and had chronically abcessing front feet. It took several months-but now the horse is abcess-free! She has a friend who is a farrier and he taught her.
I think there may be something to this barefoot thing.
Hope your horse continues to improve. :)
Love & thanks,
Melody

Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but cytek farriers are about as close to this as I have found. You can go to www.cytekhorseshoei ng.com and they have farriers listed. I know my chronically lame horse is doing so much better. I did have to put front shoes on, but you may want to check them out. I also think Clinton Anderson does the "natural barefoot" trimming on his horses so you might want to contact his people and maybe they could refer you.

I was recently introduced to the 'Natural barefoot Trimming' idea by another horsewoman. She learned this skill out in California & is keeping her horses (and the one I am loking at) this way. She has had no problems with it. Is there anybody here in the Gbg area certified to do it? Does anyone know of any schools or clinics that teach this around here? (I found a clinic down in VA that is holding a clinic soon). It sounds like a great idea for what I would like to do with a couple of horses that I am looking at. Thanks!-Melody

Got a problem with fencing. (I board) There is high tensel wire that has been
covered with plastic, but the plastic is coming off in places. In the past I
would use a small screw driver to try to open up the plastic enough to slip the
wire back in. Now there are huge areas that have come loose and I believe there
is some kind of tool made specifically for this purpose. Does anyone know what
it's called and where I could get one?

I am up to ride anywhere. Crooked creek trails are hard to follow. Funny I can find my way over to the trail head from the park but finding my way back without going on this horribel trail is difficult for me but we make the best of it.
We go to Benezette for weekend in Sept and is a great ride. Please leave me know where you are riding and I am sure I wouldnt mind tagging/riding along

Welcome Laurie! You're sure right on the freezing part. Spring will be here before we know it but not too soon for me given this morning's temperatures. Where are you located? Do you have a favorite place to trail ride? I'm most familiar with the trails around the Crooked Creek area but this past fall got to do some riding around Moraine State Park. I really loved those trails.
We are still putting our schedule together for the 2009 but hope to do a couple of group rides. If there's enough interest I think a fall ride at Moraine would be fun. Any other places anyone would like to see?

Our guest speaker will be Jessica Schaub from the Armstrong Conservation District of theCounty Animal Response Teams (CART). CART is the most critical aspect of Pennsylvania's SART program. Large Animal Response Training is a key part of this program.
Animal emergencies create danger for animals and their owners. Lack of preparation often leads to unnecessary tragedy, human injury, and economic loss. Pennsylvania is home to millions of agricultural and domestic animals. SART encourages all horse owners to evacuate with their animals to prevent endangering human and animal lives. If evacuation is not possible, developing alternative plans to provide for the safety of your horses need to be developed and put in writing. By remembering to include your horses as part of your family's emergency evacuation plan, you can avoid those last minute
decisions that could endanger the safety of your family and horses.
Join us at our first meeting of 2009 to learn more about CART in our communities. A brief membership meeting will immediately follow.
Happy New Year!!!

There was a nice lady named Linda, on here, who recommended her farrier
to me. I don't have your last name or number anymore, but I just
wanted to give you an update. I won't mention the farrier by name, but
just wanted to tell you he showed up once, a few months ago, after I
called him, did a good job, then screwed over me royally by not showing
up anymore and has evaded phone calls, not returned calls. He sent
someone else in his place, who is a nice guy, but he did a poor job.
So I am in a bad way now, looking for another farrier. When I called him
about 3 weeks ago to tell him the guy he palmed me off on did a poor
job and I felt he should come and make it right, he said he'd call me
back the next day, and as you can imagine, hasn't ever called back.
Only reason I'm telling you this is that I know you had a good heart in
recommending him, but he's not reliable. I also heard from the horse
grapevine, after the fact, that he already has a reputation for this
sort of behavior. It's really a shame that he runs his business this
way and in the end, it's the innocent horses that suffer.

I know there aren't alot of people on here anymore, but if you know of
anyone looking for a horse, you can pass this on. I'm not in a hurry
to find her a new home, I am planning to keep her thru winter anyway.
I have a nice 10 year old QH mare that I am very reluctantly selling.
I've had her 5 years and love her so much but she is a bit beyond my
riding ability and confidence level. She's healthy, never had any
problems, has very good feet. I've done Parelli with her, she does her
ground work very well, she learns very fast. I just don't have the
confidence to ride her. She needs a solid, confident leader. She needs
to have a job to do when being ridden, she gets bored easily because
she learns things so fast.
We've worked with a local natural horsemanship trainer for the past
year, he's ridden her and she does very well for him.
She's up to date on shots, has her feet done regularly , has always had
her teeth floated yearly (just done this month), has a current Coggins.
I am asking $2800 for her. If anyone out there might be interested,
let me know and I can email you photos. Rose Coffman

1. People who don't take care of their own horses will be the first ones to tell you how to care for yours. 2. You should never buy a cheap girth! 3. A handsome horse who's badly behaved will become a lot less attractive in about 15 min. 4. People who think they have nothing more to learn about riding hit the ground the hardest. 5. Children and ponies are natural allies and often have identical dispositions. 6. The richest horse people often look the poorest. 7. The closeness of a horse is one of the sweetest smells in the world. 8. A solitary ride through the woods is more beneficial then six months with the best psychiatrist. 9. The worse a person rides the more likely they are going to blame it on the horse. 10. The best thing about going to the barn first thing in the morning is that horses don't care how you look. 11. If a dealer insists a horse is worth twice what
he's asking he's usually worth half that much. 12. The best way to appreciate how another person rides is to get on their horse. 13. I can recognize another horse person no matter what town, city, state, county or country I visit. 14. You can never have too many hoof picks. 15. It is not always wise to argue with something that outweighs you by 1,000 pounds 16. I'd rather have a horse with a perfect mind then a perfect head. 17. Eight hours is not too long to be in the saddle! 18. If you think you have left the water on in the barn you have, if you think you have closed the pasture gate you haven't. 19. When someone asks you if you like their horse, always say yes 20. The happiest people I know own horses, dogs, cats and at least one deranged goat. 21. If you're looking for the perfect horse, you will never own one. 22. Owning a horse can either make a marriage or
break it. 23. I'd rather lose my Chap Stick than my curb strap. 24. You shouldn't talk about your first place ribbon to someone that came in second. 25. I would suggest seeing if John or his son Josh would come. Kenny Harlow is very good. A couple of others I have seen and have a lot of respect for are Clay Harper, Steve Sikora, and Matt Gable. I could contact any of these that you would like me to.
You spoke of me presenting at this years event. I thought I might share experience at building a horse facility. We have learned a lot in this process.
Take care!

Do any of you get the Parelli e-news? Boy, I am amazed at just how
much "stuff" they are cranking out to make money. It was really a fan
at one point, but I'm really disillusioned with them these days and
wonder if the essence of the horse is getting lost in all this
marketing? They seem to do very little with actual riding--it's all
about ground work and promoting all those expensive dvd's, now they
have "charts", "Parelli puzzles", etc. Just a little too much "stuff"
for me............................I wonder what our horses would think
if they knew about all this???????
