Welcome to the Platte River Riders; Nebraska's Wednesday night riding club!
The Platte River Riders is a group of adult horse trail riders who meet every
Wednesday at a pre-designated trail. The original chapters started in Lincoln &
Omaha and in 2007, Platte River Riders Central & Platte River Riders North
started riding!
This Yahoo group is a way to communicate with other riders, find out about
weather cancellations & provide feedback on the night’s ride (my favorite!) We
ask when posting to this list that courtesy is given to all who post.
When riding with the Platte River Riders, please follow these courtesy
guidelines:
1 ) Use good trail manners. if you don't know, ask.
2) Be a good trail user. Many times we are on shared trails. Be respectful to
other trail users and follow all rules regarding that specific trail. Horse
trails are a privilege, not a right.
3) As a courtesy to other riders, please be sure your horse is up-to-date on
vaccinations. If your horse has been sick, it is suggested you wait 10 days from
last symptoms until joining the group.)
4) If your horse kicks, tie a red ribbon on his tail. If you are riding a green
horse or if you are a green rider, tie a green ribbon on his tail. It will alert
others to potentially dangerous situations. Stallions are allowed and should
sport a yellow ribbon on his tail. However, if an incident should arise between
a stallion and another horse (mare or gelding), the stallion will be asked to
leave the group.
5) This is an adult ride, so we want to have fun. But if you are going to change
the pace of your ride, please go ahead of the group or stay behind the group and
always tell the group of your intentions. Never run up on the group or another
individual rider if you have elected to stay behind.
6) Bring a shovel & clean up any manure left around your trailer before
departing the trail head.
7) If any ride is held in a public place which requires a park permit, you are
responsible for purchasing your own permit. If the ride is across the state
line, you are responsible for making sure your horse has the appropriate health
and Coggin's papers.
8) Do not litter. Pack out what you pack in.
9) No dogs. Sorry, we love them, too, but not all horses are accustomed to dogs
and many state parks do not permit them on horse trails. Its only for a few
hours... they'll understand.
10) There are no dues or memberships. This is just an opportunity to ride
together.
11) The ride should start promptly at 6:30 PM. It is not necessary to wait for
an organizer. Whoever is saddled & ready to ride is considered the group for the
night.
12) If the trails are muddy and riding the trails will cause damage, it is the
policy of the Platte River Riders to NOT ride those trails. Lets save it for a
better day! These are "our trails". If we abuse it, we will lose it!

Donovan is a 15 hand 2001 Quarter Horse gelding. He started life with papers but they were lost and are not recoverable. Quality like he is, he does not miss them. This is a super sweet natured horse that will do just about anything you point him at and look good in the process. He is naturally slow legged and pretty moving. Would make a fantastic 4-h or local show type horse. I have ridden him extensively on trails, he will bushwhack, go up or down whatever you ask and is not a spook. This is the horse I let the friends I like best ride when they are in town. I have ridden D in several Trail Challenge type events, he will cross obstacles, water, can back and sidepass patterns, drag objects, all that stuff. I pony colts off of him, flag training horses and do groundwork while on this horse because he's got that kind of handle on him. I am selling my good go to horse for personal reasons and this is one
of those rare opportunities you can find to purchase a really good, honest right kind of gelding. $3500
I have other horses for sale as well.
Hawkeye (PR Scooter Hawk) 15.1 hand 2001 APHA Bay Tobiano gelding. Ridden on trails, started English as well as Western and is an attractive hunter type moving horse. This horse could show, ride trails, and I have been thinking about bringing him along as a Competitive Trail Riding horse. He's friendly, gentle, a little green, himself, for the greenest beginner but anyone who understands a horse and can ride a little should very much enjoy this nice gelding. $2000
Skipper (Bay Bars Dynamo) - 15 hand 1997 sorrel AQHA mare. This is a very, very pretty great minded mare that has spent most of her life being a broodmare with intermittent riding. She's gentle and quiet and will be in training until sold. Price may go up, depending on what all gets done between now and then. $1000
Chica - 1998 black Quarter Pony mare. Gorgeous 14.1 hand mare, she's been the foundation of my Quarter Pony breeding program and has never missed on delivering above average quality foals. Has easy deliveries, is great mom and easy to handle at all stages. She's had some intermittent riding as well, and could either go back to being a top producer for your Quarter Pony program or could become someone's very nice saddle mare. $1000
Classic - 2002 smokey black Quarter Pony mare - out of Chica, by a Poco Bueno/Mr Blakburn bred Grulla Dun stallion. 14 hands, and put together like a brick firehouse. 30 days last Fall, some riding since. Really nice project to go on with. $800
I need to get updated photos of Clasic, Skipper and Chica.
All of my horses have had effective Natural Horsemanship training, have fantastic ground manners, load, tie, walk nicely in hand and are easy to catch. Guaranteed sound, healty, no vices or nasty hidden surprises. Please contact me if you are interested in one of these nice horses and please feel free to forward this email to anyone you know might be looking.
I hope you know I was kidding you. Its always great riding with you guys. Kathy

Kathy, I counted while on the trail, I must have missed Linda, as she was a little behind. As for the beer, it had nothing to do with turning back. Nadine was glad we did not continue on by the time we got back to the trailer.

Mostly by word of mouth. One guy from Laurel said he hard about "these Wednesday night rides" but never knew how to find out where they were. He saw Mark Sorenson (Mark has been riding with PRR north for 3 years now) and Mark gave him the schedule and called Rich yesterday with directions.
The second gal is a member of the GS Club up here that Mark and I are members of. It was nice to see Joan on the ride. She is quite a "horse force" around Wayne, she may bring more riders yet into the PRR.
The other two (I guess there were 4 new to PRR riders) are Terri's neighbors. They heard about the rides through Teri that is having a horse trained at Terri's.
The last few rides have included a guy from here at work that retired last year. I have TRIED to get Tom on PRR rides for YEARS. He retired last year and I kept sending him the PRR e-mails. I guess I FINALLY wore him down. Now he loves the rides and I can expect a call from him every Wednesday "are we riding tonight?". Brian found out about the rides from Tom. It is so nice to have the regulars that you can count on.
I just hate to miss the rides anymore....it is such a social thing for ME!! Lol!

I am going to take Gifford Point off of the Omaha rotation due to comments on
ticks, noxious weeds, etc. Sorry I didn't get it posted before now. Omaha ride
tonight will be at Cunningham. Use the entrance of of Hwy 36 just West of 84th.
Thanks!!
Tonight's Lincoln PRR is at Wildwood Lake near Agnew, NE. This
is a nice little lake ride that will take you all the way around
it. As long as it stays light, we might be able to make it
around twice! I'm looking forward to it! Hope to see you there.
Wildwood Lake, Agnew. Take Hwy 79 to Agnew. Turn west on Agnew
Road. Go a little over 1 mile to reach NW 84th St. Turn north
and go about 1.5 miles. The entrance is at the top of the hill
on the west side. (Do not take Access Road 1)
Sorry for the late notice. I wanted to confirm with Nebraska Game & parks that is was okay to ride at Powder Creek tonight.
The ride Wednesday, July 8th, for the PRR North group is at Powder Creek WMA located by Ponca. This is mostly small hills and a few trees around the lake. I called Nebraska Game & Parks and they said we are good to go! Let me know if you plan on making tonight. I don’t want to go there and end up riding alone!!
Driving Directions:
From Martinsburg Ne: Take Hwy 20 to Martinsburg, turn on to Main Street. Head west on Main until 4th street, turn right (north) on to 4th street. Fourth street curves back west after about a 1/4 of a mile and turns into 875 Road and State Street. Take 875/State 1 mile to 585 Ave and go north on 585 Ave. Go approximately 4 miles on 585 Ave. After you cross 879 Rd continue north for a 1/2 mile. The Entrance is on the east/right side. This entrance is NOT marked. Proceed along the gravel road until the first boat dock. This will be trail head. Be sure to park conservatively so other trailers can park.
From Ponca/Hwy 12: There may be construction on 585 Road from Hwy 12, be care to follow the detour!
Take Hwy 12 to 585 road (about 9 miles west of Ponca). Turn on to 585 Road going south. Go approximately 4 miles and the reservoir will be on the left (east) side of the road. Do NOT take the first entrance to the park (do NOT turn at the Powder Creek sign), proceed a 1/4 of mile south to the unmarked entrance. Proceed on the gravel road to the first boat dock. This will be trail head. Be sure to park conservatively so other trailers can park.
Here is the list of the next rides for PRR North:
July 8th Powder Creek-Ponca July 15th
BigElkPark - Macy July 22nd Buckskin Hills - New Castle July 29th Powderhorn - Scribner or Anthon Pasture - Anthon Iowa
Hope to see you all on the trail this year!

Subject: [moderatorcentral] Planned Outage: Wednesday, July 8
On Wednesday, July 8th we will be performing scheduled maintenance on the Yahoo! Groups databases. During this time, some of you may not be able to access your groups, and group mail will be delayed.
Maintenance should take roughly two hours, and will begin at 1pm PT (8pm UTC- to determine what time the outage will take place in your neighborhood, please visit this link: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html).
Once the maintenance has been completed, we will update the Yahoo! Groups blog (http://www.ygroupsblog.com).
Go on Hwy 4 toward Lawrence and turn on Rd 2400 where there is also a
Liberty Cove sign, then about 2 miles south, and there is also another
sign pointing you west to Liberty Cove. The parking area is before you
get to Liberty Cove and I will put a sign there. There are posts and a
ditch on the side of the road you need to turn into, so everyone just
needs to make sure and be cautious of that when turning. Also there
will be quite a bit of grass in some areas, so just be cautious where
you drive. There should be plenty of room to park, and we will ride
from there.
There is only a couple miles of gravel and they are good roads.
See you on Wednesday.
I tied several rope halter about 9 years ago and still had the directions from
an old Western Horseman Mag. I got 100 feet of rope at TSC for $12.50. It
takes 20' to make a halter so 5 halters can be made. I also spent about 2 hours
trying to figure out how to make the fiodor knot under the chin that is in the
store bought halters. I never did figure it out. In the directions I have you
just tie an overhand knot. Anyone know how to do it?? Anita

dirty pens, made signs to tell people to clean their pens, took a nap and
enjoyed myself. We rode 3 hours on Thurs. and 6 hours yesterday then came home

that some drunk drove a stolen truck through and mowing, etc. Our hay is done!!!
43 round bales of grass/alfalfa mix first cutting up dry off our 15 acres!! John
had a great time moving them with our new tractor. He loves that power steering

Lol, at least you were prepared to spend time alone! Sounds like you kept busy. Cool that you made a rope halter. Where do you get the rope you use for your halters?
Sucks about the fence. Hope none of your horses got out or got hurt.

Three more were to have come to Halsey from the Loup City/Dannebrog area but Jerry Schriner got hurt loading his horse. I was at Halsey from noon Wed to 7 PM by myself. I tied a rope halter, read, cleaned 5 dirty pens, made signs to tell people to clean their pens, took a nap and enjoyed myself. We rode 3 hours on Thurs. and 6 hours yesterday then came home for the 4th. We had six riders at the scenic Parson's Pasture south of Broken Bow last night. It was a beautiful evening, perfect weather, no bugs and great company. We saw a baby fawn hiding in the grass, turkeys, deer and assorted birds. Cheryl
It was a fun northern ride! Of course I forgot to take my camera out of my truck, so no pictures. Julie B, we went down the couch trail, they all loved it :). We saw lots of deer, a couple of little fawns! They were so cute. Did some bushwacking thanks to Mark and Terry! But we got back on track and went down the "Trail of Doom". The two riders on the greenies were a little worried but they did awesome. Of course the peacocks had not fired up yet, the blue tarps were not flapping in the breeze, the coon dogs were pretty mild and there was nothing TOO scary.
I was supposed to bring Annette a horse, but then discovered that I had also promised two other people rides plus a ride for me. Hmmm, I only have a 3 horse trailer. So Mark that helps with PRR-North offered up his steady eddy mare Lexie for Annette to ride. Of course I didn't tell Annette ahead of time. One of the people that was supposed to ride with me was late so she just followed us up to the Flea Market so we wouldn't waste time moving tack and the horse over. So when I pulled into the flea Market Annette was there. You all should have seen the look on her face when I pulled in with only two horses, lol! But it was all good. Lexie was a nice, nice mare. It looked like Annette had a great time on her.
It was a GREAT time!

Remember when we were camping at Big Elk there were little bugs? Wonder what's up with that? Deryle & Nadine were wondering if we were going to do a Big Elk weekend again. We should probably look at our calendars, Annette. I'd like to again. You game? > tv

GREAT RIDE at the Flea Market!! WHO KNEW there were so
many good trails??!!!! We had 13 riders tonight and perfect horses to go
with the perfect riding weather. There were two first time horses and you
would’ve NEVER known that either of them had not been doing this for
years.
I’ve been to the Flea about 4 times and this is the
very first time I’ve ever been on most of the trails we rode tonight and
some of them reminded me of Stone Park. The bugs weren’t out either
which made for a really nice night. As we came back into the parking area,
we found that in our absence several horse campers had come in and set up for
the long weekend. Most of us stayed and snacked and “rehydrated”
for a bit after the ride, which was really nice and something that I hope we
start to do more often. A fun, fun night!!
Annette
PS – Thanks again Mark for the wonderful loaner!!!
The Omaha riders outnumbered Lincoln for a change! There were 6
of us on the LNK side: Deryle & Nadine, John & I, Kathy and
Tanya. Left Eagle at 6:30. Did some clipping along the way -
some of branches on the trail were pretty low, so hopefully we
cleaned it up a bit. When we hit 3.75 miles, we met the OMA
riders. Bob B, Vic, Jess, Lori W, Tammy M & 2 friends, Renee,
Hylah & the former exchange student (I want to say Madonna but
know that's not right!!!) They had went a little over 4 miles,
so the trail must be closer to 8 than 7 miles.
The ride out of Eagle is mostly in the trees. Pretty much a
beginner type trail but some nice areas you can move out. And
very, very pretty. Hope those of you in the area take advantage
of that nice trail. It was almost completely grown over last
year & the Kathy asked the NRD to clear it when complaints from
bikers came in re riders on the limestone. They were on the
limestone because they couldn't get thru the horse trail. So
the NRD did a nice job of clearing it last winter. More use
will keep it naturally open.
The NHTC is also working with the NRD in clearing Elmwood to
Wabash. I think there is a clearing day in Sept.
I rode Blue, John rode Butter. Blue was a bit tenderfooted on
the way back. :( There were fireworks going off in Eagle that
caught the horse's attention. But none of them broke stride;
just watched the skies and moved along.

LOL! You'd think I'd get that straight one of these days! I will be at
Powderhorn with you guys! Maybe I will bring Arron and Ginger/ He rode her at
the barn last night and had a wonderful ride. He even sidepassed! They trotted
beautiful circles and figure eights, I was really proud of both of them.
