KFFL NFL E-Wire: Sleeper Fantasy Wide Receivers   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #6704 of 7147 |
On tap for you today, we have some sleeper wide receivers. It is never too early
to start thinking about sleepers....

Sleeper Fantasy Receivers
KFFL.com's analysis of fantasy football sleepers and undervalued players for the
2009 season will be updated weekly this offseason. We have released the
evaluations earlier than ever before!

Donnie Avery | St. Louis Rams | Average draft placement: 81.6 | Last week: 81.3

The No. 1 receiver in St. Louis has speed to burn, but fantasy owners wouldn't
realize it by his 12.7 yards-per-reception average in his 2008 rookie campaign.
The anemic offense of the Rams didn't provide the University of Houston wideout
much wiggle room to showcase his talents. He caught 53 passes for 674 yards and
scored four times (one rushing) in 15 games ... not too shabby for a rook from
Houston! Avery exploded against the New England Patriots in Week 8 to the tune
of six catches for 163 yards (27.2 yards per reception), including a 69-yard
touchdown grab. At 5-foot-11, 184 pounds, some will say Avery is too small, but
we have little concern. The Rams offense should be more disciplined, and the
offensive line is likely to block much better for quarterback Marc Bul! ger, who
is reportedly enjoying the new offensive system.

Fantasy value: Avery is one of our favorite sleeper candidates. His average
draft placement puts him in the middle of the seventh round, which is fair
value. Make sure to keep an eye on how well he picks up the new system in St.
Louis, but coming from a run-and-shoot offense in college, Avery shouldn't
struggle learning new patterns.

Devin Hester | Chicago Bears | Average draft placement: 94.8 | Last week: 96.0

We aren't in love with Hester as a sleeper, but he deserves consideration with
quarterback Jay Cutler in town. Hester will be the seasoned veteran of the group
in 2009. Wide receivers Rashied Davis, Earl Bennett and rookie Juaquin Iglesias
are all expected to see time, but the pecking order will be left up until
training camp. Hester may play out of the slot due to his size, which would
limit his fantasy value since he won't be on the field as much, so keep an eye
out for this during the preseason. Cutler allows Hester to use his speed as a
true downfield threat. Over the final six games of the 2008 season, Hester
hauled in 25 of his 51 receptions on the year.

Fantasy value: We like Hester as a strong No. 4 option in the ideal world, but
his average draft placement of the early ninth round suggests otherwise for most
drafters. If you have two strong receivers already on roster, consider Hester a
risk-reward pick as your third wideout. As mentioned, make sure to keep a close
eye on his role throughout the offseason before becoming enamored with him.
