Wide receiver J.J. Stokes and his representatives, at IMG Football,
have been granted permission by the 49ers to seek a trade, according
to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli. If a deal is not found, the 49ers will
release Stokes after June 1. He is scheduled to earn $2.25 million
this year and $5 million in 2004, and the 49ers would like to spend
that money elsewhere and get some salary cap relief.

No one is going to trade for Stokes when they can get him cheaply in
June after his release. It's not like he's going to draw a lot of
interest even after he's let go. Tai Streets' role with the offense
will increase even more when Stokes is gone…that is, if Streets stays
in San Francisco. He's a restricted free agent and told the team a
few weeks ago that he would welcome a trade.
