Philippine eagle to be released in Mt. Kitangland Range Natural Park
Cagayan de Oro City (20 February) -- "Kagsabua" (meaning hope in Higaonon), a Philippine Eagle, is set to be released on March 6 at its natural habitat in Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park (MKRNP) in barangay Lupiangan, Sumilao, Bukidnon.
According to
DENR Regional Executive Director Maximo O. Dichoso the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is now back to its healthy form and was brought to barangay Lupiangan, Sumilao for acclimatization prior to its release on March 6. The Philippine Eagle is being kept in a hacking cage.
It can be recalled that the eagle was retrieved by a Talaandig volunteer guard of Mt. Kitanglad and turned over to Philippine Eagle Foundation in Davao City by then Mayor Narciso Rubio of Lantapan, Bukidnon and the Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) of Mt. Kitanglad after it was shot and injured by a farmer last September 2006.
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, provincial and other local officials of Bukidnon, non government organizations, media, and other stakeholders are invited to grace the release of the Philippine Eagle.
Director Dichoso further revealed that series of meetings were held on several occasions by the staff of Senator Juan
Miguel Zubiri, technical staff from the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc., local government of Sumilao headed by Mayor Marie Anne Baula, San Miguel representative, local government of Lupiangan and personnel from the Protected Area and Wildlife Division of DENR 10. The group planned the release of the eagle in barangay Lupiangan, Sumilao after having considered that it is no longer feasible to re-introduce it back in Lantapan.
Meanwhile, a two-day Kick Off Ceremony and General Orientation on the Land Administration and Management Project phase 2 (LAMP2) will be conducted on March 6-7 in Malaybalay City.
Regional Executive Director Maximo O. Dichoso revealed that Governor Jose Ma. R. Zubiri Jr. of Bukidnon and DENR Asssistant Secretary and Executive Director Analiza Rebuelta-Teh of the Foreign Assisted and Special Projects (FASPO) have been invited to deliver messages during the program on March 6. Topics on Land
Administration Reforms, Roll Out Plan for the Year, LAMP2 Tenure Security and other topics will be discussed on the first day.
Director Dichoso further said that aside from Governor Zubiri other provincial and municipal officials of Bukidnon and other stakeholders have been invited to grace the program on March 6. On the second day (March 7) DENR officials and personnel are slated to meet with LAMP2 officials for a Planning Workshop. The workshop will focus on the preparations from the launching of the said project, he added.
Land Administration and Management Project (LAMP) is the scaling up of land administration and management initiatives for a potential 15-20 year program to improve land administration in the country. The goal is to reform the land administration system so that it contributes to the socio-economic goals.
The DENR is the lead agency of LAMP and its partner agencies include the Land Registration
Authority (LRA), World Bank and AusAID. The participating agencies also include Register of Deeds, local government units, Department of Budget and Management and National Economic and Development Authority. (DENR-10 RPAO)

LUCENA CITY – Once a marine habitat ruined by destructive fishing practices, the Tayabas Bay off Quezon and Batangas provinces is now a safe haven for endangered sea turtles, locally called the “pawikan.”
Its 16-kilometer coastline in Lucena City, Sariaya town and the Bondoc Peninsula in Quezon and in San Juan town in Batangas are the favorite nesting sites of the gentle creatures, according to Zenaida Bernal, community coordinator of the Tanggol Kalikasan (TK) coastal and marine program.
Last week, residents of Lucena’s coastal village of Barra released into the sea more than 50 Hawksbill hatchlings. Barra used to
harbor fishermen engaged in dynamite fishing.
“The experience was glorifying,” village chair Elmer Adversario told local journalists. “It was the first time that I witnessed baby turtles racing back to the sea.”
The nesting site, which contains some 100 eggs, was accidentally discovered by children. “The entire village all served as guardians to the turtle eggs until they were hatched. Unfortunately, some of the eggs got spoiled,” Adversario said.
According to Bernal, the presence of the “pawikan” indicates a balanced marine ecosystem. To fishermen, it also meant a school of fish in the vicinity,
Since the TK launched the “Save the Endangered Species Campaign” in 2003, more than a hundred turtles have been released, Bernal said. “More reports have been reaching us that endangered marine creatures had been found and eventually released by fishermen,” she said.
On Dec. 28 last year, a Hawksbill was freed by fishermen off Macalelon town.
Last week, a four-meter juvenile whale shark (Rhincodon typus), locally known as “butanding,” was also rescued after getting trapped in a “baklad” (fish pen) in Macalelon.
Aware that it is endangered, local fishermen freed the whale shark. “To the delight of the coastal residents, the creature came back the next day and was spotted feeding on plankton in the shallow area of the Tayabas Bay,” Glenn Forbes, TK coastal and marine program officer, said.
Citing popular belief among the villagers, Forbes said the appearance of the “butanding” meant a bountiful fish catch. “A good and encouraging sign for 2008,” he said.
Five whale sharks were spotted in different areas of the bay last year.
The Tayabas Bay now has 22 fish sanctuaries which are rich spawning grounds, he said. He
attributed the bay’s rehabilitation to the partnership initiated between the TK and businessman-environmentalist Proceso Alcala eight years ago. Alcala is now a congressman representing Quezon.
Forbes, however, lamented that some local officials were undermining efforts to protect and rehabilitate the water body. “It’s really depressing, considering the bright prospects ahead,” he said. He declined to identify the officials.
In some instances, he said, the officials did not give priority to the program because the volunteer watchmen were not political allies.

A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet.
She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes.
Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make
a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!
"And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages," he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. "He's really, really sick..and I want to buy a miracle."
"I beg your pardon?" said the pharmacist. "His name is Andrew and he has
something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?"
"We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said, softening a little.
"Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs."
The pharmacist's brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?" " I don't know," Tess replied with her eyes welling up. I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money."
"How much do you have?" asked the
man from Chicago "One dollar and eleven cents," Tess answered barely audibly. "And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to."
"Well, what a coincidence," smiled the man. "A dollar and eleven cents---the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. " He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the miracle you need."
That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well.
Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had
led them to this place. "That surgery," her Mom whispered. "was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?"
Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost...one dollar and eleven cents....plus the faith of a little child.
In our lives, we never know how many miracles we will need. A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law. I know you'll keep the ball moving!
Here it goes. Throw it back to someone who means something to you!
A ball is a circle, no beginning, no end. It keeps us together like our Circle of Friends. But the treasure inside for you to see is the treasure of friendship you've granted to me.
Today I pass the friendship ball to you.
Pass it on to someone who is a friend to you.
MY OATH TO YOU...
When you are sad.....I will dry your tears, When you are scared.....I will comfort your fears, When you are worried... I will give you hope, When you are confused... I will help you cope, And when you are lost... And can't see the light, I shall be your beacon... Shining ever so bright.
This is my oath... I pledge till the end. Why you may ask?... Because you're my friend.
Signed: GOD

TAGUM CITY, Davao Del Norte -- Suspected rebels of the New People’s Army shot and killed an off-duty policeman in Davao Oriental Friday evening, police officials said Saturday.
Police Officer 3 Elvis Espanola of the San Isidro police was tending his store in Barangay (village) Taguibo, Mati City at around 7 p.m. Friday when three assailants posing as customers fired at him using handguns, said Davao Oriental police director Senior Superintendent Jimmy Manabat.
EDITORIAL - A bankrupt
movement
The Philippine Star 10/10/2006
This is how communist rebels intend to help the poor: they blow up an international airport under construction in Silay City that could boost trade, tourism and economic development in Western Visayas. They scare away badly needed foreign assistance by attacking a P5-billion project that is funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and subcontracted to a Korean company.
A report yesterday said suspected members of the New People’s Army also torched another communications tower of their favorite target, cell phone service provider Globe, in Mati, Davao Oriental. Never mind if every telecommunications tower blown up means the disruption of mobile phone services in the affected areas. The NPA likes to attack soft targets owned by those who refuse to give in to the rebels favorite fund-raising activity: extortion.
Apart from punishing those who refuse to pay protection money,
what is the reason for such attacks? Are they supposed to be in furtherance of the communist ideology? Surely NPA members are not fighting for the creation of a communist state. Around the world communist states have imploded, self-destructing from the bankruptcy of their cause. Only communist states under the stranglehold of megalomaniac dictators, such as North Korea, have managed to survive. If NPA rebels relocated to China and blew up an airport or a cell phone tower, they would be executed, with the same fate likely to await anyone who even whimpers in protest.
The communist movement in this country is not an insurgency but the largest armed criminal organization, supported by duplicitous politicians who are using taxpayers money to hold back development and prevent security forces from doing their job. This crime organization is led by people who are begging the world's most liberal country for lifetime welfare privileges and asylum. They cannot be
expected to care if the country they no longer call their own is destroyed by their hooligans.

MANILA, Philippines -- Two in every five Filipino adults (40 percent) -- or about 21 million --believe in Cupid, the Roman god of love, according to the latest survey by the Social Weather Stations.
The Fourth Quarter of 2007 Social Weather Survey also found that among those who believed in Cupid, over four out of five (85 percent) believed that they had already been struck by “Cupid’s arrow.” Cupid is often depicted as a winged child who carries a bow and quiver full of arrows.
The survey specifically asked respondents: “Do you believe
in Cupid?”
Belief in Cupid reached 49 percent in the Visayas, 47 percent in Metro Manila and 36 percent each in the balance of Luzon and Mindanao
.
More believers in Class E
“It is relatively higher among Class E, with 46 percent, compared to Class D, with 39 percent, and Class ABC, with 36 percent,” SWS said in a statement released Wednesday.
Over half of those with live-in partners (51 percent) said they believed in Cupid, compared to those who were married (40 percent) or among those who are single or never married (37 percent).
Among women, about three in five (62 percent) with live-in partners said they believed in Cupid, compared to 42 percent among married women and 31 percent among single or never-married women.
Among men of different status, however, belief in Cupid hardly varied. It was 43 percent both among men who were
single or never-married and men with live-in partners, while it was 38 percent among married men.
Meanwhile, the proportion of those “already struck by Cupid’s arrow” was higher in Luzon outside of Metro Manila (88 percent), in the Visayas (85 percent) and in Metro Manila (84 percent), compared to Mindanao (78 percent).
“Across the board, majority of those who believe in Cupid say they have already been struck by his arrow,” SWS noted.
Noncommissioned
The noncommissioned survey was conducted from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2007, using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults divided into random samples of 300 each in Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
It had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percentage points. Kate Pedroso, Inquirer Research

ESPOO, Finland, June 29 -- A text messaging (and mobile phone use in general) grows in popularity, excitement over using new technology clashes head-on with common courtesy, not surprisingly giving rise to a mobile-phone manners backlash. So to help you avoid SMS miscues and text-message missteps, TheFeature.com composed a top 10 list of texting guidelines.
Common courtesy still rules. Contrary to popular belief, composing an SMS while you're in a face-to-face conversation with someone is just about as rude as taking a voice call.
Remember that SMS is informal. SMS shouldn't be used for formal invitations or to dump your girlfriend or boyfriend. The casualness of SMS diminishes the strength and meaning of the message.
Don't get upset if you don't get a reply. Before you text someone and get frustrated at the lack of a response, be sure that they're familiar with how to use the service, and that their carrier will accept
messages from yours.
Be aware of your tone. It is extremely difficult to discern tone in text messages, just as in e-mail. What seems to you to be a completely innocuous message may be grossly misinterpreted by the recipient, causing certain discomfort if not irreparable harm.
Don't SMS while you're driving. Talking on the phone is bad enough. You won't know what hit you - or what you hit - if you are pounding out a message on your keyboard.
Leave the slang to the kids. Don't expect your stodgy superiors at work to be hip to the lingo of the SMS streets. And don't expect to win points with your kids by trying to be cool, either.
Remember that SMS can be traced. Anonymous messages - if you must send them -are still best sent from Web sites.
Be conscientious of others' schedules. Don't assume that because you are awake, working, not busy, or sober that the person you're texting is as well. Many a pleasant slumber have been interrupted by
recurring "beep-beep...beep-beeps" of messages.
If it's immediate, make a voice call. If you can't get through and your text message is ignored, there's probably a good reason. There are still some times when people don't even have a thumb free to respond.
Remember that your phone does have an off button. There are very, very few things in the world that absolutely cannot wait.
