Re: Temporary Court in Hawthorne, NV - Tips of Temp. Conversion of Tennis Court

Update

We've been playing every other day, sometimes every day. We've learned
a couple of things about doing this on a tennis court. First, the
tennis net is 2 inches higher. In this case, we can't lower it. But
you know, it's no big deal. You can say, "It would have been in if
this was a proper pickleball net," but it's the same for both players,
so no one on either side has any advantage.

We used a red chalk line and a 50' tape measure to line it out one of
the unused tennis courts (tennis court lines almost completely gone).
The red chalk does not wash off, but the blue and yellow do, per the
label. Be sure to get the red. It's only a thin string line that
won't bother even active tennis court use.

We then used the yellow chalk sticks, which are maybe 3/4" to 1"
diameter, that came with our portable pickleball court net setup.
Warning: It takes 2-3 sticks to mark out one court on concrete, the
rougher concrete taking more.

And this chalk washes off. We've had to re-chalk after one rainstorm.
But we found that in variety stores and dollar stores you can buy a box
of 5-6 chalk sticks for only $1 - $1.29. All the colors are light, and
we think all will work fine, not just the yellow. In fack, we re-
chalked today with another color, due to another light rain last
night.

We did use gray 2" duct tape after the red line charking, on the outer
borders, which is holding up pretty well. But we would not do that
again. The red chalk line, with the yellow or similar 1" chalk lines
drawn over it, works fine. When we leave here, we will remove the gray
duct tape. It won't survive the winter likely and we don't like
litter.

We did put a small dot of white paint in the corner intersections of
the red chalk centerlines, so when we return next year, we won't have
to re-measure. We will then only red line chalk again, then yellow or
other pastel chalk line over that.

It's been nice having "our" own pickleball court. Only one day a
father and daughter from out of town too, came to play some tennis, but
with no lines, had fun just whacking the ball back and forth. They had
heard of pickleball and watched up play awhile. For them to re-line
their tennis lines would have been a lot more work, one advantage of
the small court of pickleball over tennis.
