VO2Max has been correlated to your best finish times in races of various distances by the well known running coach and physiologist Jack Daniels, PhD. He calls this the VDOT score and will be very close to your measured VO2Max. You really don't need to go through the expense of having that measured. Just go to the web address below and enter your best time for a realtively recent race distance. The calculation will give you a VDOT score which you can take directly as your VO2Max. The calc will also show "equivalent performances" in other race distances based on your current fitness level (i.e., the VDOT score). Remember, this assumes that you gave the race your best effort. If you have done several 5K's for instance, you use the best finish time for the calc.

The VDOT score can be used to design a training program that will improve the score (thus, your VO2Max). Paces based on your current fitness level are used. As an example, one fairly simple way to check progress is to do a 5K race to get a baseline VDOT score, then embark on a training program, and then do another 5K race to confirm improvement. Races tend to reflect your best effort and this is what correlates to VO2Max. Of course, you could also just run 31 laps on the indoor 0.1 mile track. However, for you, would this truely reflect the same effort as a race? If so, then you can do something as simple as that.

Does anyone know a place that can actually measure our VO2 Max?  I have asked several clients who have the equipment, but none are willing - they claim they don't know how to do athletes.  VO2 max is VO2 max  no matter who you are, right?
Surely we have a respiratory therapist somewhere within our large circle who can advise us on this.

I would really like to actually test mine and then do some serious speedwork and see if I can improve it (see if you can improve your physiology at an advanced age).

Bottom line is that items donated to either Kenyan children or vets are all
going to good causes. These contributions, where ever they go, serve to do good.
I have gobs of old running shoes that need to go somewhere and now I have some
ideas of where to send them. I might send half of them to Kenya and half of them
to the VA in fact.

what is the compelling reason to send our

CHARITY STARTS AT HOME

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OWN KATIE BOLLING:

I wanted to extend an invitation to my "running
friends" to help me make this time of year a little
brighter for a group of children in Kenya. I'll be
sending some of my worn running shoes and running gear
to an organization in Kenya called Hope
Runs(www.hoperuns.org), and, while I was at it, I
thought I'd make it a Chicago-wide effort. Mainly, I
want to give children an opportunity to participate in
the world's most simple sport (and my favorite) and I
thought it made a lot of sense to reach out to
children. I'm inviting you to send me any:

Running shoes
Women's sports bras
Shorts (not tight!)

Through a unique, home-based approach, Hope Runs uses
running as a primary community builder in locations
where structured after school activities and athletics
programs are unheard-of luxuries. Making health a
primary goal, and building off the universality of
children's enthusiasm for activity, Hope Runs
volunteers use running and sports as a way to bring
the community together.

Please drop off your donations at Running Away anytime
before December 21st.

Ok, so those of the tender ankles are moving indoors (and I must admit indoors has its preferred moments).  But for those of us who like the gritty outdoors year round…..give me real mud, real tree rootey trails, real hills…. None of this pavement stuff (beats on chest) for me.  Nope, give me Goodnow Grove year round.  Don’t like the looks of that trail?  Make your own trail; go around that puddle or thru it.

Want to have some fun?  Charge across the open field, straight into the wind, climb that 55 degree sledding hill (on all fours?), slam over the top and belly flop down the opposite side of the hill.  Now that’s winter running at it’s finest.  Although snow is recommended prior to your belly flop it is not necessarily required.

Want to do some speed work?  Find the ol’ RR bed on the west side of the park, a flat, fast, 1 mile long straightaway.  Get some cinders in your shoes; the grit will do you good.  You might even get the chance to run down a buck or two.

Of course the turtles are hibernating, so you won’t see any of them hanging around the lake.  You’ll need to wait until spring to see those bathing beauties again.

Now and then you just might want to run a lazy loop or two, well that’s mighty fine as well.  The ski trails are well groomed and without pitfalls. Oh and yes the ‘pits’ are open and heated 8am-5pm, water is available in the nature center but the trail fountains are off.  One of the best features of the park are the trees, they block most of the wind on the trails so I usually don’t need to wear a wind suit.  That is unless I really want to do some belly flops.

Be safe out there,

David

Avia Orange County Marathon Website Has Training Route Feature
New online features help runners/walkers plot training runs and communicate with other runners

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - With training for the Avia Orange County Marathon Presented by Nutrilite in full swing, a new online feature at OCMarathon.com can help runners and walkers better prepare for the Sunday, January 6, 2008 event. The OC Marathon has introduced a route planning feature to help individuals plan and track their training runs.

Similar to the popular "Mapquest" when plotting driving directions, the route planner allows runners and walkers to click and develop their routes using an easy to access map. After creating an account, individuals can start accessing area maps based on inputting a zip code and creating a starting point on the map. The remainder of the feature allows people to navigate through that map, creating the course desired.

Created by realbuzz.com, a UK-based lifestyle and community networking site focused on running, health and fitness, along with travel and entertainment, the route planning feature will record the distance of the run, while also providing street names and landmarks. In addition to the route planning feature, runners and walkers can also post their own blogs and create discussion groups on the marathon's website, allowing people to exchange race advice, training tips and course information. An online diary, which can be shared or kept private, can also be created to track a person's training regimen.

The 2008 Avia Orange County Marathon Presented by Nutrilite
The fourth annual event, which starts at Newport Center, adjacent to Fashion Island in Newport Beach and finishes in the Greater Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, is scheduled for Sunday, January 6. In addition to the 26.2-mile marathon, a Half-Marathon, a 5K and Kids Run will also be conducted, along with a two-day Health Expo (January 4-5) at the Hyatt Regency Irvine. Last year, 12,000 runners participated in the combined events. In the first three years of the event, more than $1.7 million has been generated for charity.

Report Reaffirms Brooks® as a Frontrunner in Specialty Running
Running Company Earns #1 in Dealer Confidence Ratings by Independent Survey

BOTHELL, Wash. - According to the recently released Sports Marketing Surveys USA's Running Specialty Store Sales Survey, performance running company Brooks Sports, Inc. sets the pace with a first-place Dealer Confidence standing in the specialty running industry. Additionally, the fall 2007 survey reports Brooks moved ahead of the pack in Brand Ratings, taking home gold in five of 11 company and product performance categories.

To determine these rankings, Sports Marketing Surveys conducted in-depth phone interviews with 75 specialty running store owners and managers throughout the U.S. Panelists rated their suppliers on various quantitative and qualitative attributes.

The current survey reveals the following about Brooks:

* For the second season in a row, Brooks takes top billing in the survey's Dealer Confidence Index, which measures retailers' overall impressions of each brand and the company it represents.

* For the tenth consecutive season, Brooks leads the pack with #1 Brand Ratings for in-house customer service and product delivery. Brooks also ranks #1 in profit to dealer, sales rep support and segmentation.

* Brooks ranks #2 in the survey's respected Market Strength Forecast, which formulates each brand's predicted strength as reported by all running specialty stores that participate in the panel, regardless of whether they carry the brand in question.

"At Brooks, our goal is to offer our specialty running accounts a positive experience with our brand by providing top-notch service and quality running products they can trust," said Brooks Vice President of Sales Rick Wilhelm. "We appreciate the recognition our dealers gave us with these brand momentum ratings. They show that Brooks is continuing in the right direction."

In addition to this survey, Sports Marketing Survey USA's Running Specialty Store Retail Audit Report for third-quarter 2007 reveals Brooks earned a 1.9 percentage point increase in market share since second-quarter 2007. Brooks' market share has grown nearly 4 percentage points since first-quarter 2005 according to this monthly industry report.

Brooks sells nearly 80 percent of its gear in the specialty running retail environment-a strategic focus that has driven 15 consecutive quarters of double digit growth for the brand in this channel. Brooks' current sales figures also reflect its specialty channel strength reported in this survey:

* While the specialty running marketing has grown 8.8 percent year-to-date through August 2007, Brooks outpaced it with 13.9 percent growth for the same time period.

* Brooks' 2007 third-quarter sales and units sold were up 22 percent and 19 percent respectively, relative to the same time period in 2006.

* Brooks' spring 2008 footwear bookings are up 15 percent relative to same season bookings in 2007.

Brooks' products have also received rave reviews from industry influencers. In its Fall 2007 Shoe Review, Runner's World granted the Trance™ 7 its coveted Editor's Choice award. The Trance™ 7 also received the award for Best Motion Stabilizing Shoe from Running Network in its 2007 Fall Shoe Guide.

Help Save Lives While Running in the 2008 AT&T Austin Marathon
St. Jude Heroes program partners with top Texas running event

In 1999, the St. Jude Heroes program was born when a group of runners in Washington, DC, decided to meld the sport they love, running, with fundraising for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®. Since that time, serious athletes and those who wish to push themselves to accomplish personal fitness goals have been raising money to help fight childhood cancer.

Anyone can be a St. Jude Hero. Each Hero receives fitness and fundraising support, a Heroes resource packet and information about St. Jude to share with sponsors. St. Jude Heroes have access to a virtual training module that provides a fitness assessment and a tailored daily training regimen, as well as their own personalized websites to keep in touch with sponsors as their event date approaches.

Sign-up to become a St. Jude Hero for the 2008 AT&T Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, held in Texas' capital city on Sunday, February 17, 2008. The USATF certified marathon and half-marathon courses start and finish in downtown Austin on Congress Avenue. For more course and race information, visit: ATTAustinMarathon.com.

St. Jude Heroes are also eligible for great incentives based on their fundraising level such as a St. Jude Heroes Nike Dri-FIT shirt, invitation to a Heroes-only pre-race pasta party and much more. To become a St. Jude Hero and to help save the lives of children, go to: StJudeHeroes.org

See Music City, Hear Music City, Run Music City: 9th Country Music Marathon™ & ½ Marathon on April 26, 2008
NFL head coach Jeff Fisher encourages kids to run the YMCA Country Music Kids' Marathon; free online training program available

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (December 3, 2007) - The ninth Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon is set to hit the streets of Nashville on Saturday, April 26, 2008. Featuring many of Nashville's best live bands on 28 stages along the 26.2 and 13.1-mile courses, the musically themed road race is expected to attract 35,000 runners, walkers and junior racers. For 2008, the half-marathon will be capped at 22,500 participants and is expected to sell out prior to race week. Participants are encouraged to commit to their New Year's resolution and sign-up at CMMarathon.com to receive the early-entry rate before prices increase on January 1, 2008.

The Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon is recognized as the ultimate tour of Music City, USA, featuring historic sites like the Parthenon, Nashville's world-renowned Music Row and an expansive finish line festival outside the Tennessee Titan's home, LP Field, located along the Cumberland River. The event culminates with a post-race concert, which has featured past acts Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, Phil Vassar, Jo Dee Messina, Diamond Rio, Martina McBride and Kenny Rogers.

In 2007, the race's unique blend of music and running produced the largest event to-date with 29,082 total registered participants, a sizable increase from 22,007 in 2006.

"I encourage runners and walkers to experience Nashville's hospitality," says Adam Zocks, the event's general manager. "Each year, both the race and the Nashville community receive positive responses from runners across the U.S. and Canada. As the world's second largest combined marathon and half-marathon event, Nashville has proved to be a great running destination."

A strong youth program is contributing to the race's overall growth. The YMCA Country Music Kids' Marathon presented by Spenco Insoles is expected to draw 3,000 youth runners grades K-6 on Friday, April 25. Last year the race was moved to Friday evening, the day before the marathon and half-marathon races, to accommodate the increasing demand, and allow parents, who run in the marathon or half-marathon, to watch their children cross the official marathon finish line. The YMCA Kids' Marathon grew from 500 participants in 2003 to 2,600 participants in 2007.

Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher will continue as the spokesperson for the YMCA Country Music Kids' Marathon presented by Spenco Insoles. Even during the NFL Draft, Fisher makes time to greet the kids at the finish line and congratulate them on their success.

"The growth of the YMCA Country Music Kids' Marathon over the past few years is a reflection of each of these kids' commitment to enhance their physical activity and to reach a goal," says Fisher. "As a coach, it is very rewarding to see children motivated to cross the finish line and our hope is that they continue to do so throughout other aspects of their life."

Fulfill Your Marathon Dream
Running USA estimates more than 410,000 people completed a marathon in the U.S. in 2006. Free training tips, a free online training program and charity training information are available to runners and walkers at CMMarathon.com to help fulfill their marathon dream.

New for this year, all registered participants of Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon receive access to a complimentary online training program offered by New Balance and Active Trainer. From the first timer to the seasoned veteran, this program offers a mix of aerobic, anaerobic and cross-training workouts. The online program consists of weekly running tips, message boards, a training log and analysis, daily training emails and inspirational tips.

Those in need of additional inspiration to start training may choose to join Team In Training (TNT). This program provides professional training and support to runners and walkers while benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Over the past eight years TNT's runners and walkers have raised over $16 million (net) in their fight against cancer.

Returning sponsors include Foot Locker, New Balance, Saturn, Sugoi and Accelerade.

So the trails are bad. I checked them both and I will not risk them. The Running for Kicks Turkey Trot loop on the streets of Palos Hills is good and Joe Werner has his group running there. I am running at Bally’s on Harlem and 159th St. with wingman and the Rocks. Y’all can run wherever you want. Kingsberry on 159th & Central is the breakfast place about 10 am. See ya.

the Rocks will not be running out of doors until the snow/ice/slush goes away.
We're looking for 8 miles this weekend; we may just stay in our house (we have a treadmill and a recumbent bike); we may go to the Bally's on 95th and Harlem (ish); we may go to the Bally's on 159th & Harlem---it's all weather dependent!

I'll watch the emails that are sure to fly today! joanne

There is another option ...

Joe Werner and company are running at 8901 W. 123rd St. in Palos at 8:00 AM on Saturday. They will do three 4-mile loops and have Gatorade/Water out. We could do the same. He told me at the Turkey Trot that they do a good job of salting the streets and that the hills did a good job of preparing them for Boston last season. This course allows faster running during snow season and is closer for some people. Not me though, but neither is Yankee.

The trails are perfect…for showshoeing, cross country skiing, birdwatching……

I respectfully suggest we all repair to the local health clubs to get in our mileage and meet at Kingsberry on 159th near Central for breakfast about 10 am.

Any takers?

no can do

we've already gone over the risk to the club with pepper spray

handing out wine at a race puts the club at risk of dramshop actions

of course, you can bring your own in a paper bag
and dispense at will, without club sanction

red would be my choice, but I can be persuaded otherwise

FYI--I took a couple of clients out on OPT yesterday...9-4 and back only about 3 inches of snow---even today it looks pretty good to run.  You'll just run slower.  Make sure you are plenty hydrated before you head out there-cuz you'll be out longer.

Mark,

We've run at Yankee when the trails are clear, iced up, with 8 inches of snow etc. If conditions there are too bad some of our members know routes along side streets where we are able to bypass some of the trails. However, Old Plank is generally more favorable for winter running. That is why we typically migrate there in mid to late winter.

ING New York City Marathon 2007: Exciting Races, Record Field, $18.1 Million for Charity and More
From the New York Road Runners' Marathon Mile Markers

The Champions
At the 38th ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain led wire-to-wire in the women's race and pulled away from Gete Wami of Ethiopia, 2:23:09 vs. 2:23:32, while Martin Lel of Kenya kicked ahead in the final mile to win the men's division over Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco, 2:09:04 vs. 2:09:16. Both champions notched their second ING New York City Marathon titles, and Lel became the first man in history to win both the Flora London Marathon and ING New York City Marathon in the same year.

Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland set a new course record of 1:52:38 to capture her third ING New York City Marathon wheelchair title. Hunkeler previously won in 2004 and 2005, but a serious injury forced her to miss last year's race. In the men's wheelchair division, defending champion Kurt Fearnley of Australia won in 1:33:58.

Breaking Down the Numbers
This year's ING New York City Marathon boasted the largest marathon starting field ever as 39,265 runners crossed the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, 2,517 more people than started the 1996 Boston Marathon (36,748). Exactly 38,524 runners made it to the finish in Central Park, the largest number of marathon finishers in history. The second largest finisher field was the ING New York City Marathon 2006 at 37,866, and the third largest was the ING New York City Marathon 2005 at 36,856.

More than 100,000 people applied for the ING New York City Marathon 2007, a record number of applicants.

New York Road Runners paid $809,300 in prize money and time bonuses, with Radcliffe earning $170,000 and Lel taking home $160,000 plus a Toyota Prius each. And for the first time since 1982, there were four American women in the top 10: Elva Dryer (6th), Robyn Friedman (7th), Melisa Christian (9th) and Alvina Begay (10th).

Teaming Up for Charities
The official New York Road Runners charity program was one of the biggest winners of the weekend, raising $18.1 million, including $207,500 for American distance running development. More than 4,950 people ran for an official charity or charity partner. With more than 1,200 runners, the New York Road Runners Foundation's Team for Kids raised a projected $3.6 million to benefit youth health and fitness programs in under-served New York City public schools. Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Fred's Team, in honor of the legendary Fred Lebow, raised a projected $4 million for cancer research.

The Recycling Bin
New York Road Runners partnered with Poland Spring(R) Brand Natural Spring Water and the Department of Sanitation to implement the first recycling program in the history of the ING New York City Marathon. The initiative was an overwhelming success, as more than 11 tons (22,080 pounds) of cardboard and plastic was recycled throughout the five-borough race. In Manhattan alone, more than three and a half tons of waste was recycled, while Brooklyn South was a close second at three tons.

Saucony Named "Vendor of the Year" by Independent Running Retailers Association
Brand also honored with "Product of the Year" Award for ProGrid Omni 6

LEXINGTON, Mass. - (November 28, 2007) - Saucony, Inc., a subsidiary of Collective Brands, Inc. (NYSE: PSS), and a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel, was recognized as "Vendor of the Year" and the brand's ProGrid Omni 6 named "Product of the Year" by the Independent Running Retailers Association (IRRA). The awards were presented to Saucony at The Running Event, an annual running conference and expo for independent specialty running retailers recently held in Austin, Texas.

"The 'Vendor of the Year' award is given to the company that best meets the IRRA's performance criteria," said John Rogers, a founding member and executive director of the Independent Running Retailers Association and owner of Maine Running Company in Portland, Maine. "Saucony has set the bar exceptionally high this year, delivering best-in-class service and consistency of product to the specialty run channel," added Rogers.

"The entire Saucony team is extremely proud to be recognized by the IRRA," said Richie Woodworth, president of Saucony. "We view our retail partners as an extension of the Saucony team, so this honor is really a collaboration as we continue to make significant headway in the independent specialty running channel," added Woodworth.

Saucony was also honored with the IRRA's "Product of the Year" award for the ProGrid Omni 6, the brand's flagship stability shoe that comes in moderate or ultimate options.

"Over 70 percent of our members voted, and the Omni 6 was the clear choice for the award," said Rogers. "The Omni continues to be the 'go-to' shoe for retailers in this highly competitive category, based on product consistency and Saucony's unrivaled replenishment program," he added.

"The IRRA is an integral part of our running community and is dedicated to the growth and health of our sport," said Woodworth. "Their standards and expectations are high and we will continue to strive to exceed them with great products and excellent service," added Woodworth.

Big Sur International Marathon Launches Online Community

Runners, walkers and fitness advocates can share stories, ask questions and plan their running routes online via the new Online Community link at BSIM.org. Blogs, forums (or discussion groups) and route planning features were created for the Big Sur International Marathon site by realbuzz.com, a UK-based popular lifestyle and community networking site focused on running, health and fitness, travel and entertainment.

Bloggers can visit the Online Community to keep an online diary of their training regimen, which can be kept private or shared with friends and the running community. Participants seeking race advice, training tips and other course specific information, can access the Forum feature for information and feedback from other runners and course experts. Both the Big Sur International Marathon (April) and the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay (November) have separate blog and forum features specific to those races. The Route Planner allows runners to plan and measure their running routes from the comfort of home by mapping out different courses around the Monterey Peninsula and beyond. The routes can also be kept private or made public for other runners and local visitors to access.

"Runners are passionate, even obsessive, about their sport," says Alicia O'Neill, North American Director of Sales and Marketing for realbuzz.com. "They want to share their thoughts, questions, fears and information with others who are going through a similar experience. These new features are a great way to communicate with like-minded individuals."

The launch of these new web features went live just weeks before the 5th Presentation of the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay, November 11. Participants were encouraged to use the features to document their experience and to query others as they prepared for the 13.1 mile race along Monterey Bay. Marathoners can now access the new features as they gear up for Big Sur's April 27th event, simply by clicking on the "Online Community" link at BSIM.org.

The Big Sur International Marathon is among the first of an impressive lineup of marathons signing on with realbuzz.com. Initially partnering with the Flora London Marathon and LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, realbuzz.com is now extending its popular services to many others, including the Los Angeles Marathon, Flying Pig Marathon, ING Georgia Marathon and several destination races throughout the U.S.

Good morning all.

I probably won't be there either.  It's one of those days filled with places to go and people to see and you just want to go to all of them and just can't.

Oh, can everyone gather their energy together and make a wish that my darn knee gets well fast(er).  Thanks.

I'll miss everyone.

Have fun!

Cindy

I will probably not make the party but if someone could gather stories and stuff and give it to me the following Saturday that would be greatly appreciated.  I made a commitment before the party was announced.

I have a commitment about 1 in Braidwood but I would love to get together either in Park Forest, Frankfort, or in Oak Forest.  I can't run long but I would love to see everyone. Also, I may have a short fun run from my house on the 24th and then breakfast ( hubby is cooking) if anyone is interested.

Chris:
You mean, meeting out at the Park Forest woods on Xmas morning? Sounds good to me. No one that I know of has mentioned this recently. You're the first person to ask!  See, in years past, when Bob Stevens lived right down the street, on Chestnut, we'd run through the woods on Xmas morning and then go to his house for cocoa and a grab bag exchange. It was a fun little event. We haven't done that for some time. We could always just run at the woods and then do a little tailgate (like we do some mornings with the margaritas).
Whatever.
I'm up for anything; whatever the group decides.
Take care!
Margaret
