Nyakundi, Bergmann Win Carlsbad Marathon
Kimaiyo, Herron claim Carlsbad Half Marathon crowns
By Patrice Malloy

CARLSBAD, Calif. - (January 21, 2007) - It was smooth sailing for the winners of the 17th Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon held Sunday morning under mostly-sunny skies and temperatures ranging from the high 40s to low 60s.

Charles Nyakundi, of Kenya, cruised to a victory in the marathon in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 36 seconds. Running alongside countryman Joel Limo the lion's share of the race, Nyakundi pulled away from Limo just past the 18 mile mark. "I felt good today," said Nyakundi, who won the Big Sur Marathon last year. Limo finished second in 2:32:57 and Sammy Kosgei, also of Kenya placed third (2:34:21).

Dolores Bergmann of Eureka, Calif. led the women's marathon field from start to finish winning in 2:55:08. "I'd like to qualify for the Olympics Trials in the marathon," said Bergmann who ran a 2:48:55 at the Newport Marathon in Oregon last June. "I will have to look for a flatter course to qualify though," added Bergmann. Marlene Mueller of Venice, Calif. placed second in 3:08:57.

The sold-out Carlsbad Half Marathon was a one-man show as Hillary Kimaiyo, of Kenya, opened a wide lead early on and led the 7,000-plus field to the uncontested win in 1:04:39; his third half-marathon win in as many weeks. J.T. Service of San Jose, Calif. finished second (1:07:45) and Hector Hernandez of Chula Vista, Calif. finished third (1:07:59).

Camille Herron, of Corvallis, OR, also claimed a wire-to-wire victory in the women's half-marathon with her 1:19:13, a personal best by 8 seconds. Beverly Owen was the runner-up, clocking 1:21:45.

The marathon and half-marathon courses toured through the seaside village of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego. Runners and walkers were treated to scenic vistas and the sights and sounds of the Pacific Ocean's pounding high surf, pelicans and surfers.

CIGNA to Continue as Title Sponsor of Falmouth Road Race
Leading employee-benefits company renews its support of top-rated race

FALMOUTH, Mass. - (January 18, 2007) - Organizers of the Falmouth Road Race have announced that CIGNA will return for the second year as the title sponsor of the 35th annual Falmouth Road Race to be held on Sunday, August 12. CIGNA Group Insurance, which includes disability, life and accident insurance, and CIGNA Dental will continue to provide important financial support as the race looks forward to its 35th edition this year.

In announcing the sponsorship, CIGNA Group and Dental Insurance president Karen S. Rohan said, "We are thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Falmouth Road Race in 2007, a race nationally renowned for offering a first-class running weekend for recreational runners and elite competitors alike. CIGNA has a very strong commitment to supporting people of all abilities in leading healthy and productive lives. We are pleased to sponsor this outstanding road race again as it continues to encourage people from all over the world to become more actively engaged in health and wellness."

Last year the race helped raise over $860,000 for 35 local and national non-profit organizations. "This longstanding tradition of fund-raising for numerous non-profit groups makes this race a natural extension of our corporate philosophy of being a "Business of Caring," added Rohan.

CIGNA's sponsorship will enable race officials to continue to attract a world-class field of U.S. and international runners. The prize structure includes a prize purse for the top U.S. finishers. Race co-director Lucia Carroll said, "CIGNA's team members, led by Karen Rohan, serve as an example through their own commitment to healthy living. This leadership, combined with CIGNA's ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of those in the community, makes CIGNA a natural partner for this event. Their support ensures that the Falmouth Road Race will maintain its high standing in the sport."

The Falmouth Road Race is one of the top-rated running events on the international circuit and annually attracts a world-class field, racing seven scenic miles from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights. In all, almost 10,000 recreational runners mix with the world's best, with an estimated 50,000 fans lining the course, making this one of the top sporting attractions in New England and a centerpiece of summer on Cape Cod

Last year's champions were Alevtina Ivanova of Russia and Gilbert Okari of Kenya. It was Ivanova's second victory in Falmouth, having also won in 2004. Okari is a three-time champion (2004-06) and the men's course record holder with his 31:08 in 2004.

Past Falmouth winners in the men's division have included Olympians Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers, Craig Virgin, Rod Dixon and Alberto Salazar. Women's champions have included such luminaries as Olympians Joan Benoit Samuelson, Lynn Jennings, Grete Waitz and Colleen De Reuck.

The Falmouth Road Race, founded in 1973, has been named the "Best USA Road Race" by Runner's World magazine. It has also been featured in Life Magazine and Sports Illustrated, as well as on CBS television and ESPN. In 2005, it was named in Sports Illustrated "One of the 25 essential things to do in the summer." It was the only road race listed. Proceeds from the race benefit Falmouth school programs and youth organizations.

The race annually receives more than 25,000 requests for entry forms and fills its field of 10,000 in less than a week. Forms will be available online from May 1 to May 10. For more race information, go to: FalmouthRoadRace.com

Hey Gang:

Thanks for a great race today.  Wonderful spirit, lots of enthusiasm, creative, fun.  It was really "all that."

A reminder for those who were at the meeting, and for those who weren't but were at the Cruise today, please send me a quote about the race.  I will write an article for tomorrow's eNews Park Forest, with pictures from today's event, and I need quotes.

A quote from the race director and club president would be especially nice.  Very simple, "Had a great time."  "Love the race."  "Joe Baska can't be trusted."  Anything at all, and I'll use whatever I receive today.  Please give me your full name and your town.

Residents of Park Forest are especially asked to send something.

We formed an ad hoc committee to study the possibility of the club taking over management of the Scenic 10.  If you would like to help us, the first meeting will be Wed., January 31, at 7 p.m. in Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive, Park Forest.  The place is contingent on me getting permission to use the hall.  I will send out confirmation.

If we can't get Village Hall, as chairman I move we take the meeting to Sybaris.  Will the club pay for a suite?

Again, in addition to anyone who is a member of the club, we urgently need residents of Park Forest who are club members and/or members of other running clubs, or supportive of the Scenic 10, to show up for this meeting.  Please forward this to anyone from other running clubs (Cal Striders?) who might be able to help.

Thank you all again for a great race.  I'll have pictures up on the website and a story on eNews Park Forest for tomorrow.

Catalina Marathon - "America's Premier Trail Marathon" - Celebrates 30th Edition

Pacific Sports LLC will celebrate the 30th edition of the Catalina Marathon on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - St. Patrick's Day. Regarded as the top trail marathon in the United States, this marathon is one of the most rewarding courses in the world and one of the island's signature events. In addition to the marathon (26.2 miles), a 5K, 10K and Kids Run with point-to-point ocean views through the beautiful island of Catalina are also available.

What is it about this race that makes it unique? What first comes to mind is the challenging hills and terrain, the spectacular views of the island and Pacific Ocean, and the camaraderie felt among the veteran athletes. The off-road trails from Two Harbors to the finish in Avalon present a challenging elevation gain of over 3,700 feet throughout the course. This marathon is the ultimate trail running challenge. Yes, the hills are daunting and intimidating, but once at the top, the view of the California coastline, the ocean and the buffalo herds and downhill descent are spectacular.

The Catalina Marathon tells so many stories of tradition and legacy. "Buffalo" Bill McDermott's has run all 29 Catalina Marathons, finishing first overall in a record 13 of them. In 1924, 14 buffalo were released on the island as "extras" for a western film, "The Vanishing America". The buffalo remained and multiplied for the sole purpose of encouragement for every runner's fight through the interior island, seldom seen by tourist. Many claim "this will be my definitely be my final year" but something, maybe the buffalo, always bring them back for more. Runner's World named it the "Cult Marathon of the U.S." and that holds a special meaning to many who come from all over the country each year to compete and see old friends.

Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, the Catalina Marathon has countless offerings. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and celebrate the success of finishing the "The Toughest Marathon" as recognized by Competitor Magazine in 2005. Each participant always takes home amazing tales of their quests and returns each year for more.

Road Runners Club of America Seeks Applications for 2007 Roads Scholar Program

COLUMBIA, Md. - (January 12, 2007) - Since 1996, the Road Runners Club of America has awarded stipends through its Roads Scholar program to assist U.S. post-collegiate road runners who show great promise to develop into national and world class road running athletes. The RRCA is now accepting applications for our 2007-08 Roads Scholar Class. The application can be found on-line at www.rrca.org/programs/roadsscholar/. The deadline for applying is Saturday, March 31, 2007

The Roads Scholar program has distributed over $200,000 to emerging American distance runners. Grants in the amount of $5000 per year have been awarded to four to six athletes annually since the program's inception. The driving factor in the creation of this program was the goal of improving the state of long distance running in the United States. A sign of the program's success were the results of the 2004 Summer Olympics where Deena Kastor, a 1997 Roads Scholar grant recipient, captured the bronze medal in the woman's Olympic Marathon. In 2006, the program's success was again proven when Samia Akbar, 2006 Roads Scholar recipient, finished the ING New York City Marathon as the 3rd fastest U.S. female.

The program is directed towards runners who:
1) Are U.S. citizens
2) Have graduated from college (or whose class has graduated)
3) Plan to race in top Open road race events (not just track, cross country or US-only events)
4) Expect to earn less than $30,000 from all sources during the calendar year

The program has received generous financial support over the years from many donors. To view a list of the program supporters visit: www.rrca.org/grassroots.php

Until Next Time – Ponder this

Dear Friend/Subscriber:
You are about to meet a man who broke his own ultra-long-distance-running World
Record more than TWO decades after he set it. We are profiling this amazing
athlete not necessarily because you are interested in the sport of running or
taking up running yourself, but rather because it proves, once again, that much
if not most of the deterioration of the physical body that we blame on aging is
in fact the result of the choices we have made and continue to make. Read on to
be truly inspired and to find out what this man has to teach us about reclaiming
the boundless energy of youth.
Enjoy!
The Best Is Yet To Come – Ed

Imagine That!

Imagine getting just two and a half hours of sleep in a 6-day period.
Now imagine that during these 6 days you traveled 643 miles on foot – almost
all of it running.
As if that weren’t enough, imagine that you did this not to get away from
headhunters in a primitive land or to escape some dreaded psycho case, but just
because you wanted to see how far you could push yourself. This is exactly what
legendary ultramarathoner Yiannis Kouros did in late November of 2005 at the
Cliff Young Six-Day Race in Australia. This world-record run broke his own
six-day world record of 635 miles that he ran two decades earlier in 1984 as a
28-year-old! The 49-year-old version of Yiannis Kouros outran the
world-record-holding 28-year-old Yiannis. This isn’t supposed to happen
because of the ravages of time.
Further, this practically nonstop running for 6 days didn’t seem to break his
spirit or dampen his enthusiasm for long runs, as he was soon talking about the
possibility of running 1200 kilometers (a little more than a hundred miles
further than he ran this time).
On top of THAT – this Herculean feat apparently didn’t do Yiannis in,
because a little over a month later (33 days, to be exact), Yiannis was in
America running the Across the Years 3-day race. At this event, he set a new
world record for a 48-hour road race (256.9 miles) on his way to winning the
72-hour race with a new course record of 323 miles (an amazing 23 miles more
than the former record).
Setting new world records is not easy for Yiannis because he has to beat his
own Personal Bests/World Records from years earlier (he holds more than 154
World Records set during his 23-year reign as the Greatest Ultramarathoner of
All Time). The question is: How does he stay so youthful? Why doesn’t his body
break down from all those years of torturous ultra-long runs?

How Many Hours of Sleep Do We Really Need?

The experts say, based on clinical studies, that we need 7 or 8 hours of sleep
a night to be at our best. Yet the literature says that for some 20 years,
Yiannis has gotten by (make that excelled) with “less than 3 hours of sleep
every 24 hours.†According to Adam Chase in an article for Running Times,
“When Kouros first moved to Australia [in 1990] he was so busy with his
studies, becoming fluent in English, and building a house for his wife and two
daughters that he slept only a half hour to an hour a day.â€
With all his running and so little sleep, how does he keep going and going and
going? The truth is: How much sleep we need depends on how much stress we are
experiencing. If we believe we can achieve our desires and see a way to reach
our goals, then our stress is low and we need less sleep. If, however, we
don’t believe and can’t see any way to reach our desires (whatever they
are), then we experience more stress and consequently need more sleep (i.e.,
escape from the stress – a time for the body and mind to reenergize and
rejuvenate).
Some artists and other very creative people (composers, painters,
scientists,…) can go days or longer with very little sleep when they are
focused or engrossed in a creative work. So it is with Yiannis, for besides his
running (creating bigger and bigger challenges for himself), Yiannis is an
accomplished poet, painter, composer, lyricist, singer and history buff. These
interests command his attention and keep his stress low (need for sleep less)
because he knows he can reach his desires to write, compose and perform.

How Much Training Is Enough?

As far as training goes, Yiannis doesn’t do much of it. Whereas most
ultra-long distance runners put in over 100 miles and much more per week with a
regular long training run, Yiannis uses his races for his long runs. He does
most of his training on a track doing intervals (such as, six 2Ks or four 3Ks,
…). He never runs more than 12K (about 8 miles) during a workout and when it
is real hot, sometimes only 6K of running. It seems to work for Yiannis, but he
doesn’t recommend it for other ultra runners.

What Can We Learn From Yiannis Kouros?

1. Exercise: Since Yiannis doesn’t run more than 12K (8 miles) per workout in
training for races as long as 600 miles, maybe we don’t need to exercise
nearly as much as we thought to have highly productive and enjoyable days.

2. Diet: In one 300-mile race while eating every 20 minutes to keep his energy
up, he consumed half his calories from Greek sweets (baklava, fresh creamy
custard and honey cookies,…). This shows us that eating a “perfect dietâ€
may not be necessary as some think, for us to have all the energy we need.

3. Weight loss: During these ultra-long races, Yiannis doesn’t lose weight
unless he chooses to, and sometimes he even gains weight. This reminds us that
we must burn more calories than we consume if we are to lose weight; exercise
alone won’t do the trick.

4. Sleep/Rest: After one of his long races Yiannis will sleep 10 to 11 hours a
day for several days to allow his body to repair itself. As mentioned, the rest
of the time he needs only little sleep to be his best. This reminds us that how
much sleep or rest we need is an individual thing based on how much physical
stress (or perceived stress) we are under.

5. Slowing Aging: The fact that Yiannis was able to break his own World Record
more than 2 decades after he set it proves that much if not most of the physical
decline we blame on aging is actually the result of choices we have made and
continue to make.

6. Inspiration/Motivation: Yiannis claims that the secret to accessing
unlimited energy to enjoy life more lies not in training, diet, good genetics,
running form or any other corporeal advantage, but rather in motivation and
inspiration. Instead of focusing on how tired and sore his body is during these
grueling races, he entertains thoughts of his Greek heritage, ancient Greek
literature and mythical heroes. He is also motivated by his poetry, songs,
nature/countryside, hardships in his youth, and even perceived slights. Bottom
line: The focus of our thoughts can be energizing or draining AND is more
important than actions and activities, as important as these are.

Hall Shatters U.S. Record at Aramco Houston Half Marathon
Dryer wins USA women's half-marathon title; Tune breaks course and state records in marathon
Race report from Steve Karpas

HOUSTON - (January 14, 2007) - Ryan Hall separated himself from his competitors with a blistering 4:36 first mile, then ran the rest of the Aramco Houston Half Marathon alone on Sunday en route to a pending U.S. half-marathon record.

The 24-year-old runner from Big Bear Lake, Calif., ran 59 minutes, 43 seconds and became the first American ever to break an hour in the half-marathon distance on a record standard course. Hall beat the previous U.S. record, set by Mark Curp in 1985, by a minute and 12 seconds. The Team Running USA athlete obliterated the previous course record, set last year, by 2:24.

"I train in altitude," Hall said when asked about this significant record. "I saw my splits around 4:30 and then thought, 'I can do this.'"

Hall, in his half-marathon debut at the USA Championship, ran the last 12.1 miles through the streets of Houston alone in what was arguably the best-ever road performance by an American distance runner (and the 8th fastest man all-time at the distance on an unaided certified course).

Fasil Bizuneh and Meb Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic Marathon silver medalist, were left to battle for second place, finishing two seconds apart in second and third place, respectively, but more than two minutes behind Hall. Brian Sell, who won the U.S. half-marathon title here last year, finished sixth.

Hall, a Stanford grad, took home $21,000 for his efforts: $12,000 as national champion, $4000 in bonus money for the course record and an extra $5000 for the U.S. record.

Temperatures in the low 50s on Sunday morning made it a great day for setting records, and Hall was not alone in erasing past marks.

Dire Tune, 21, came to Houston to set a course record, according to her agent, and could proclaim "mission accomplished" 2:26:52 later. Tune shattered the old course and state records - set 23 years ago by former world marathon record-holder and 1987 10,000 meter world champion Ingrid Kristiansen - by 59 seconds.

Her previous best was 2:30:48 set in Los Angeles in 2005, where she finished fourth. The Ethiopian pocketed $25,000 for first place and an additional $10,000 for the Chevron Houston Marathon course record.

In the men's marathon, Feyisa Tusse of Ethiopia crossed the finish line in 2:11:39 - over two minutes ahead of his closest competitors. David Cheruiyot, 36, who won the race in 2005 and 2006, finished fifth. Tusse took home a $3000 bonus for running a time below 2:12 in addition to the $25,000 first place prize.

In the USA Women's Half-Marathon Championship, Elva Dryer and Kate O'Neill battled for the lead throughout the race. Dryer, a two-time Olympian, pulled ahead in the final stretch, clocking 1:11:42, a five-second victory over O'Neill, a 2004 Olympian.

"I had to maintain a good steady pace," said Dryer who won her fourth USA road crown. "A couple of us were together at the beginning. I knew she wasn't far behind the whole time." Dryer collected $12,000 for her title.

In the marathon, 14 athletes (ten men and four women) qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials by running under 2:22:00 and 2:47:00 respectively.

At Houston's largest single-day sporting event, more than 18,000 runners took part in four marathon weekend events (marathon, half-marathon, 5K and children's run).

Yae Captures Second Victory at P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon
New Champion Crowned on Women's Side
Race report from Susan Reid

TEMPE, Ariz. - (Jan. 14, 2007) - Ethiopian Terefae Yae returned to the medal stand and the women's race saw a new champion at the fourth edition of the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and ½ Marathon Sunday. Yae, who won here in 2005 and was runner-up last year, used a sprint down the home stretch to win the 26.2-mile race in a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds. Adanech Zekiros, also from Ethiopia, won the women's race in 2:31:43, the second fastest women's time in event history.

Running on a chilly morning where the thermometer read 28 degrees at the start, the men ran a slow, tactical race that quickly broke into two packs. Yae, 25, with countryman and friend Fikadu Degefu, 34, stayed at the front, running 5:23 and 5:22 thru miles 18 and 19. Belarus product Andrei Gordeev, 31, after twice falling off the pack, surged to the front at mile 21 before he and the pack slowed to a 5:36 mile thru 22.

In 2006, it was Yae who lost the sprint to the finish. This year, he turned the table and used a late burst of speed to edge out Degefu who finished just three seconds behind in 2:14:16. Gordeev was third in 2:14:27 and defending champion Shimelis Mola, also from Ethiopia, finished fourth in 2:14:51.

"The Ethiopians are strong in the shorter distances," Degefu said of Yae's sprint. "But I don't have the speed as he does. We are coming into the finish with three people (Yae, Gordeev). I tried to come together with my friend, Terefae, but he has more power."

"Our bodies were not warm," Yae countered as the athletes commented on the unusually cool race conditions. "It is like putting your body in ice. I never could get warm."

Zekiros, who was making her first appearance in the United States, battled the length of the course with Mulu Seboka, passing thru the 10K and half-marathon marks with a course record in sight. Zekiros made her decisive move in the 21st mile and went on to win by nearly four minutes. Salomie Getnet, 20, another youngster making her first appearance in the U.S., was second in 2:35:12.

Three-time defending champion Shitaye Gemechu struggled with a stomach illness and did not finish, dropping out near mile 14.

Over 36,600 participants, including the Phoenix Children's Hospital Kids' Rock racers, registered for the fourth annual P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon. Over $5.8 million (net) was raised by 2,300 runners and walkers representing 13 official charities.

World's Greatest Marathon Runners Set for London: Gebrselassie, Tergat, Baldini, Gharib and Limo
Keflezighi, Khannouchi Lead U.S. Contingent

LONDON - (January 11, 2007) - The world's greatest marathon runners will go head-to-head in a battle for the 2007 men's Flora London Marathon title on Sunday, April 22nd.

Last year's fastest marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie will take on his great rival and world record holder Paul Tergat of Kenya, plus Italy's Olympic champion Stefano Baldini, Morocco's double world champion Jaouad Gharib and the reigning London champion Felix Limo of Kenya, in one of the highest quality men's fields ever assembled for a major city marathon.

"We are delighted to have such a strong field for the men's elite race again," said Flora London Marathon Race Director David Bedford. "The presence of the world record holder, the world and Olympic champions, our reigning champion and the in-form Haile Gebrselassie will, I am sure, mean we have another hugely exciting race through London's streets."

Gebrselassie returns to London 12 months after finishing a disappointing ninth in the 2006 race but on the back of some highly impressive form in the latter part of last year. The Ethiopian - a double Olympic and four-time world 10,000m champion - recorded a personal best of 2:05:56 to win the real,- Berlin Marathon in September, making him the fifth fastest of all-time, and he also won the Fukuoka Marathon in December.

Tergat set his world record of 2:04:55 in Berlin in 2003 but was forced to pull out of the London Marathon last year after sustaining an injury just a few days before the race. The 37-year-old, who finished second in London in 2001 and 2002, will meet Gebrselassie over the marathon distance for the first time since London 2002 after a track rivalry that stretches back to the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart.

But these two will certainly not be the only contenders. Limo proved last year that he is a hard man to beat as he added the London title to previous victories in Rotterdam, Berlin and Chicago, and this year he will aim to become the first man since Mexico's Dionicio Ceron in 1996 successfully to defend the men's London Marathon crown.

Fifth last year, Baldini will be full of confidence for his eighth appearance in London after adding the European Championship title to his 2004 Olympic crown last summer, while Gharib will be hoping to improve on finishing second in 2005 before he defends his World Championship title in Osaka this August.

Other significant contenders include: the surprise winner of the 2006 ING New York City Marathon, Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil; the impressive American pair of 2004 Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi and former world record holder Khalid Khannouchi and Kenya's Martin Lel, the 2005 London champion, who lost to Limo last year by just two seconds.

The addition of South Africa's Hendrick Ramaala, who was third last year, means that the top five finishers from 2006 return to contest the 2007 race.

The British challenge will be led by Jon Brown, who has twice finished fourth at the Olympic Games. Brown was forced to miss last year's race due to injury, but returns to the London field hoping to improve on his sixth place finish in 2005.

As well as chasing prize money and record bonuses totaling more than $250,000, the competitors in this year's race will also be fighting for points towards the World Marathon Majors (WMM) series. The other WMM races this year are the Boston Marathon (April 16), the real,- Berlin Marathon (September 30), the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon (October 7) and the ING New York City Marathon (November 4), plus the IAAF World Championship marathon races in Osaka (August 25 for men and September 2 for women).

Our esteemed Madam Secretary, Ms. Rock, reminded me that other running groups, specifically the Striders may have members that are residents of Park Forest.

Carolyn and/or other Striders, could you also pass on our desire for runners that are residents of Park Forest to contact the Village Manager, Tom Mick, and advise him of our concers about the possible elimination of  the Scenic 10 ?

I'll also send an e-mail to Cassandra of the Striders.

Greetings all:

The website has been busy this week.  Yesterday showed over 300 visits over the past week, going back 7 days from Saturday.  That's down to 293 as of right now going back seven days from today.

But, the night is not over.

I also started advertising next week's race at eNews Park Forest, http://www.enewspf.com  Hopefully we'll pick up some runners from that as well.

Subject: MidWinter Cruise Needs Volunteers!

Greetings and Happy New Year to All!

Non-Race Director Carolyn and Non-Race Director Assistant Dick seek the always ready support of club members to assist with a variety of wonderful positions during the January 21, 2007 MidWinter Cruise (see the PFRPC website for all the details, if you don't already know them!).

Here is a listing of job responsibilities that require a warm body and won't take up too much time!

Please REPLY to Carolyn VanderVelde and not to the entire group!!!  carolynruns@...

1.  Mile Marker Timers for Miles 1, 2 and 3.
The Rock Runners (that would be Neal and Joanne) will mark the course ahead of time and take the timers to the three sites just as the race begins.  You'll be supplied with a watch and mile marker sign.  You supply the energy as you call out the runners' split times. This is a Fabulous Opportunity for those of you with youngsters--there's nothing like a cheering section to get the runners really moving!

We do believe that Judge Ray will be the timer for Mile 3--Ray!  Are we correct??!!

2.  Registration Desk personnel aka Checker Inners--we supply the paper, pens, table and chairs.  You supply the organization needed to process the folks who preregistered as well as those who wait till race day. (We haven't figured that one out yet, as everyone knows this race runs regardless of weather, and everyone knows that anyone who lives in this part of town never uses weather as an excuse not to run anyways!). Three or even four people is wonderful!

3.  Finish Line Fellows -- We are ASSUMING (and you KNOW what happens when you ASSUME) that Prez Fred will be manning the timing clock. Are we correct Prez Fred?!!?  We also need Popsicle Stick Passer Outers--this is a REALLY important position and having two people makes it a bit easier, as anyone crossing the line is usually not thinking 100% and needs a gentle shove in the direction of the gym to turn in their finishing time (which IS the popsicle stick!).

4.  Registration Desk for Recording of Finishing Times--if you have the time, you could do the front end registration as well as the post race time recording...and just think, you'll have MET all these folks already, which should really speed up the job!  HA!  Again, three or even four people is grand!

5.  Pancake Duty (which is WAY better than KP duty) -- we are thrilled to have our Grill back in order along with the Original GrillMaster and Now GrillMaster II!  But they can't do it alone folks!  Volunteer to be in a toasty warm environment on race day and help with the pancake cooking/serving/cleanup...you'll feel very accomplished! Many hands make light work---how about four or five folks for this one?!

Please do consider volunteering your time to the Club for this PFRPC unique event.  What better way to start off the New Year?!

Reply to Carolyn VanderVelde (if you reply to the Rock Runners, you won't hear from us until after Jan. 12, as we are running the Goofy Challenge in Orlando next weekend and then on vacation!).  carolynruns@...

Let her know which position you would like and we'll make every attempt to put you into it.  If there is a position you absolutely do NOT want, let us know.  Heck, we're nothing if not flexible (well, we think Carolyn is flexible; Neal and Joanne both need to do some yoga!).

Thanks for thinking about your club!  And don't forget, the membership meeting of the club immediately follows the conclusion of the MidWinter Cruise, in the same place.

Joanne and Neal aka Rock Runners

Dearest Nieces and Nephews,

Some items of note:

1. This coming Sunday is our world famous Mid Winter Cruise. We can always use help. Please advise if you can devote a couple of hours.

2. Please mark your calendars as our Saturday runs move to Yankee Woods off of Central in February and March.

3. We met with the Village of Park Forest last week about the Scenic 10. They definitely want to hear from club members that are residents of Park Forest. If you haven't done so yet, please contact Mr. Thomas Mick, Park Forest Village Manager and explain to him why the Scenic 10 shouldn't die. Each family member can contact him since each Pancaker family consists of individual members. The Village Board needs to hear from Pancakers that are citizens of Park Forest.

Stay safe--see you all on the trails....

Sell, Bersagel to Defend USA Half-Marathon Titles in Houston
Aramco Houston Half-Marathon opens 2007 USA Running Circuit; $59,500 race purse

INDIANAPOLIS - (January 9, 2007) - Defending USA Half-Marathon champions Brian Sell, 28, (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Annie Bersagel, 23, (Minneapolis, Minn.), along with two-time U.S. Olympians Meb Keflezighi (San Diego, Calif.) and Elva Dryer (Gunnison, Colo.) headline the field for the 2007 USA Half-Marathon Championships this Sunday, January 14 in Houston. The national championship, hosted by the Aramco Houston Half-Marathon, is the first race of the 2007 USA Running Circuit (USARC).

The U.S. record holder and 2006 USA champion at 20K Ryan Hall (Big Bear Lake, Calif.) joins Sell and Keflezighi in the hunt for the first U.S. road championship of the new year.

A field of more than 40 of the top U.S. men will include two-time USA half-marathon champions Dan Browne (2001 and 2005) and Ryan Shay (2003-04) as well as returning top-five finishers from 2006: Max King (Bend, Ore.), Brandon Leslie (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Andrew Carlson (White Bear Lake, Minn.). Fasil Bizuneh (Bristol, Va.), who won the Dallas White Rock Half-Marathon in December with a time of 1:02:59, should also be in contention for the title.

In the women's championship, Bersagel will travel from Oslo, Norway where she is a Fulbright Scholar studying Political Science at the University of Oslo, in an effort to repeat her 2006 title run. Bersagel will face a field that includes three-time USA road titlist Dryer, who was the runner-up at the 2006 USA 20K Championships, and Samia Akbar (Herndon, Va.), who finished third in the 10,000 meters at last summer's AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The USA Championship will feature a total prize purse of $59,500 with $12,000 for the respective men's and women's national champions. The Aramco Houston Half Marathon will also offer a bonus of $4000 for breaking the existing race records of 1:02:07 and 1:10:55 for men and women, respectively, plus an additional $5000 for breaking the existing U.S. records of 1:00:55 (Mark Curp, 1985) and 1:07:34 (Deena Kastor, 2006).

In addition, two of the top five U.S. male and female finishers will qualify for the IAAF World Road Running Championships to be held in Udine, Italy, Sunday, October 14, 2007.

About the USARC
The USA Running Circuit (USARC), a USA Track & Field road series, features USA Championships from 5K to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners, including Olympians Deena Kastor, Meb Keflezighi, Marla Runyan and Anthony Famiglietti. The thirteenth edition for the men and twelfth for the women, the 2007 USARC has nine events for men and seven events for women.

The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6000, $4000 and $2500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships - Boston and New York City - will be doubled.

The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.

Past Champions Eye Course Records at P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon
Women's three-time race champion undefeated entering 2007 race

PHOENIX - (Jan. 9, 2007) - At last year's P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon Shimelis Mola of Ethiopia used a furious sprint down the final homestretch in his victory (2 hours, 13 minutes, 8 seconds) over countryman and 2005 winner Terefae Yae. This Sunday, January 14, Mola, 24, and Yae, 25, return to the Valley of the Sun, both looking for a second victory and seeking to take down the current course record of 2:10:33 set by Kenyan Haron Toroitich at the 2004 inaugural event.

After witnessing last year how quickly Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie cruised to a half-marathon world record (58:55) over the last half of the marathon course, Mola and Yae both believe they have a strong chance to lower the 26.2-mile course mark.

However, there is a new face and emerging talent who is reported to keep pace with Gebrselassie during his grueling training runs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and who should prove to be a powerful contender in his marathon debut according to Mike Long, elite athlete coordinator for Elite Racing, Inc.

Tariku Aboset, 24, from Ethiopia is the newcomer and though his marathon prowess is yet to be proven on a certified race course, his counterparts will be well-aware of his presence on race day.

"We are hearing lots of talk from all the 'veterans' about this new young guy," Long said. "He knows about the fast Arizona course from his training partners, and obviously from Haile. Tariku is excited to make his debut here and we are excited to see what he can do."

In the 2006 women's race, the diminutive Ethiopian, Shitaye Gemechu, captured her third straight title at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon, winning in 2:31:44. Like the men's race, Gemechu edged out countrywoman Askale Tafa (2:31:46) to remain the only female champion in P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon history.

The 26-year-old Gemechu competed in four marathons, including her Arizona appearance, in 2006. She finished second at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, fifth at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego and was seventh at the real,- Berlin Marathon.

"She is either in great shape or very tired," Long said jokingly, knowing that Gemechu, despite her small size of five feet, 96 pounds, is a giant among marathoner runners.

Gemechu will, most likely, be challenged by Adenech Zekiros, 24, from Ethiopia and Romanian Luminita Talpos (34). Both are new to the Arizona course, but have been training well and feel strong entering Sunday's race.

World Marathon Majors Leaders Kipkoech Cheruiyot, Prokopcuka to Run 2007 Boston Marathon
WMM Million Dollar Chase Enters Second Season

BOSTON - (January 10, 2007) - In its 22nd year as the major sponsor of the Boston Marathon, John Hancock Financial Services has announced the return of two-time race champion Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot of Kenya and last year's runner-up Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia for the 111th running of the race on Monday, April 16.

Cheruiyot and Prokopcuka have chosen to compete in Boston to reinforce their commanding leads in the prestigious World Marathon Majors series and move closer to sharing the million dollar prize awarded at the end of the year. The series brings together the best athletes in the world to compete in Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. John Hancock also sponsors a significant purse for the top runners at Boston each year.

Both athletes return to Hancock's professional team with outstanding accomplishments. Cheruiyot, 28, is the reigning Boston and LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon champion, earning the distinction as the only man to have ever won both marathons in the same year. In Boston last year, Cheruiyot claimed the course record in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 14 seconds. He also won Boston in 2003 and the Milan City Marathon in 2002.

"Boston is always an exciting race to compete in and I'd like to thank John Hancock for welcoming me back to run again against a highly competitive field," said Cheruiyot.

Two-time ING New York City Marathon champion Jelena Prokopcuka will be racing for the crown after placing second last year at Boston and fourth in 2004. Prokopcuka, 30, has competed for Latvia in the past three Olympics and is a multiple national record-holder on the track and roads. At the 2005 Osaka Marathon, she won with a national record of 2:22:56. At New York the past two years, she was the undisputed leader despite being challenged by the world's best runners.

"Robert and Jelena are two of the premier marathoners in the world, as evidenced by their current standing atop the World Marathon Majors leader board," said Guy Morse, Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the marathon. "The constitution of the elite athlete field makes Boston one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events of the spring. Like the rest of the community, we appreciate John Hancock's ongoing support."

"For more than 20 years, John Hancock has fulfilled its promise to the city of Boston and surrounding communities to support the Boston Marathon. By bringing top runners like Robert and Jelena back to the race year after year, John Hancock helps ensure the Boston Marathon remains one of the world's premier road races now and in the future," said John D. DesPrez III, President and Chief Executive Officer of John Hancock Financial Services. "In addition, beyond being an annual sign of spring in the Boston area, the Boston Marathon also has a tremendous positive effect on the region, generating a direct and indirect economic impact of an estimated $95 million annually, and John Hancock is proud to play its part in this event."

Hospital Hill Run Becomes Non-Profit

LEAWOOD, Kansas - (January 2, 2007) "The Grandfather of all Kansas City Road Races," the Hospital Hill Run, has incorporated into a not-for-profit entity under the Amateur Running Category.

For the past several years the race has been managed by Lisa Drake, owner of Event Midwest, an event management company, and supported by a variety of organizations including: MARA (Mid America Runners Association), Crown Center, the hosting sponsor and Saint Luke's, the presenting sponsor.

"Lisa Drake was asked by UMKC to step in and oversee the event," stated Tim Donnelly, President of the new Hospital Hill Board of Directors. "She has put in countless hours coordinating the event and surrounding activities."

One of the founders of The Hospital Hill Run was MARA in 1974, and who in the years since has been instrumental to the event as well as offering ongoing support over the years. As the host of the event, Crown Center (the other founding organization of the event) has been a long-time supporter, 32 years, and a huge help with providing such a great venue.

"The organization of the board simply puts a governing body and support mechanism in place for the race director, sponsors and ultimately the participants in making this event the best of its kinds in Kansas City and the surrounding area," stated Donnelly.

"The time had come to take the Hospital Hill Run to a new level by incorporating, thus creating a board of directors," said Drake. "My recent goal was the incorporation of the Hospital Hill Run and creating a board to sustain its growth and status, and I have achieved both of those goals."

The new board of directors are: Tim Donnelly, President; Mike Roberts, Secretary; Ron Pierce, Treasurer; Rod Murrow, Dan Dolan and Sandy Cohen. Stated goals of the board include: 1) support this historic run as it grows and focuses on health and wellness, 2) support all athletes and 3) create a scholarship endowment fund for a male and female high school athlete. The endowment goal would include supporting male and female high school athletes with a collegiate scholarship.

The 34th running of the Hospital Hill Run Half Marathon, 12K, 5K and 1 mile family fun run will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2007. Runner's World has selected the Hospital Hill Run as one of the top half-marathons in the United States.

Subject: Moze Has Been Up The Mountain To Speak With Darius mickjogger2006

[The following is to be read only at the reader's peril of being inundated
with verbiage. Delete NOW!]

And, lo, it came to pass in the daze of forbidding hypertechnology that
Moze, son of Bose the Twin Speakers and befriended of Deke, was besieged
with 9 of the 10 plagues of prophesized technological breakdown, oh no,
which is the road to hell. Somewhere within and without his Internet
connection, the Four Trumpeting Horsepeople of the Apocalypse had been
unleashed.

And they spread far and wide across the cyberspacific land of daemons and
godlessness, and verily preventedeth any or most encrypted angelic
messagings from either Moze or his listserves from reaching out and touching
anyone. Neither, as thus it was programmed, could any of anyone else's
responsive messagings reacheth back and lambaste him.

Thus there was a void. An abyss. The once musically intoned "road to
hell." 'Twas the nether regions of all neither-reachings wherefrom the
wellspring of well-being could neither dump nor be sprung. And Moze retired
unto his study at the back of the earthen bunker to await his fate.

"MOZE!" they all jeered. "Ascend the mountain! Confer with our gods of
technology! Maybe they can hook you back up! Maybe Mumbo-Jumbo, and all of
the other, gods of the Congo, can drum up enough connectivity amidst your
circuitry so as to allow your messagings to see and be seen, to read and be
read, to splotch and be splattered all throughout the kingdom of DOM (and
Doom)--without the pall of *S*P*A*M* being predetermined to rain down upon
your bivouac and whack your pee-pee. Maybe Mumbo-Jumbo can hoo-doo you!"

For verily it was heretofore revealed that Internet Service Providers had
proceeded to provide no service, that Birth and/or Hatchday Daemons'
cheerless greetings were no more to be spread daily across the monitors of
Merrimack, or that plaintive pleadings from amongst all the cognoscenti were
no longer able to plead nor be pled or to bleat nor be bled--for yea, oh
yea, all the Internet Non-Service Providers had afflicted the chosen with
ANTI-*SPAM* ANTIVENOM which heralded, of course, the end of the ANTEBELLUM.

For this meant war, and Moze knew it. His faithless leaders and hapless
followers could no longer get in touch. In truth, their e-missives were all
being manhandled by the Angle of Death-To-Al-SPAM! It was all a gigantic
mishandling of Miss Information anyway, so Moze knelt down before his
monitor... and preyed.

Behold he was emblazoned by a flash.

It was a flash of bedazzlement from the moze unlikely wellspring of all: the
rapidly conflagrating Bush.

"I shall, yea verily, INVADE the Mountain," thought Moze in his repose. "I
shall ring up those idiots at that mosque of Isp and seek to discover why in
the fez my e-mails won't 'e' anymore. Indeed, I shall confer with Darius."

Darius IS Mumbo-Jumbo, god of the Congo, intern-boy / go-fer who answers the
phone.

Darius BE dat Mumbo-Jumbo, god of the Congo, surfer-boy / techie-dude who
answers my phone.

Darius HE say: "Um, I'll hafta check, mon. Hole on."

Prior to ascending the Mountain and speaking with Darius, god of the mumbo /
techie of the jumbo, Moze had frantically communicated via cyberspace with
his technologically challenged Internet Service Provider, known far and
hardly at all throughout the land as ye clod McLeod.

Cynthaetica, goddess of the gyro / princess of pooh-pooh, had earlier sent
"e's" to Moze reassuring him that nothing could be done. "Thou hast
purchased thine contract with this program; beest thou content. You can't
quit our club."

Furthermore or less, Cynthaetica, goddess of gumdrops / dudette of spew, had
informed Moze, via "e," that nothing involving emael could be resolved via
email. It had to be done by phone. Hence Moze's vocal ascension of the
Rock Unhandy Mountain.

Darius HE com-mon bak an' HE say, "Dude, we kin mebbe maek yur emael
accuntings... uh... onto the 'white list.' Yo butt-furs, we, umm, we gotta
makeus uppa 'ticket.'"

Thus spake Darius, god of the Congo, Mombo-Mumbo god of the Congo / Hee-Bee
Jee-Bee / whut-up techie hell-fire kewl-dude / internet service provider
customer service representative. Tanks bee to Ja, mon.

Finally dea mon HE say, "Yo giveus a hole mo day, like yeah, 24 hours."

So those be the final voicings this day of Darius, Mumbo-Jumbo god of the
Congo, unto Moze, our anti-hero.

THUS, dig, SPAKE ZARATHUSTRA!

*He* say, yo, like dig, like my email is likely to maybe become
"white-listed" by this time tomorrow (whatever, yo, in dee hail
dys-whitelist be). [presumably... free of spam-blockers?]

And, yea verily, by that time... you all should...

...get...

...what all I'm now sending...

...this time.

  # # # # #

Moze has since come down off his high, as well as the mountain, and is
immediately now trying a "test."

Uh-huh.

So, like, if YOO (an' yoo know hoo yoo are) do not DOO

get this,

then,

YOO KNOW HOO,
Mumbo-Jumbo god of the Congo,
Hoo bespake Mo Jive from out of the Congo,
To mee, yo, Moze,
Who furs roze UP to dee Congo
and fought with all his mights and machetes and bongos
and argued and toiled and fought with the mongos
Boom-lay boom-lay boom-lay BOOM*
*[this line plagiarized from Vachel Lindsay]
and retched and defamed, laying waste as his tongue goes
and marched up the Mountain, ho!, single-file
In rows of roes, braiding corn-rows up his nose
speaking with Darius with all that he's got
squishing that sucker all down to his toes
and snorting this snot out thru his nose:
"Darius, dude, god of the Congo
Mumbo-Jumbo god of the corn row
Mombo-Dufus at the do-nothing Help Desk
Ja save you son, and give me a rest
Just make ALL MY EMAIL SAIL RIGHT THRU
Or I swear Voodoo will hoo-doo you
My cyber-spacific Voodoo will hoo-doo you
You and your Isp and its 'cust serv' too!
My cyber-spacific Voodoo and ALL of the spaceheads
Will hoodoo and voodoo and hoodoo you!
And all of you techies in cyber-world, too!!"

Thus Spake The Troubadour.

ATLANTA - (Jan. 4, 2007) - The ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon reached a milestone in registrations as more than 10,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes have signed up for the Sunday, March 25 inaugural race. Reaching the 10,000-runner mark more than eight weeks ahead of expectations, the event, which is limited to 15,000 participants, is expected to sell out quickly.

"Safety is our first concern, so once all spots are gone we will not want to expand the field beyond 15,000. Next year, it might be different. This year, it is important to create a race that is safe, fun and memorable for all participants: runners, wheelchair athletes, walkers, volunteers and for the spectators who come out to cheer," said Victoria Seahorn, race director of the ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon.

An expected field of 15,000 would make it one of the largest inaugural events in the country.

"The ING Georgia Marathon will not only be a great event for the participants, but it will create significant economic impact as well," Seahorn added.

Compared to other marathons in Georgia, the inaugural event is quickly on its way to becoming the largest long-distance event in the state. The Atlanta Marathon & Half Marathon usually attracts close to 9,000 participants with nearly 90 percent of those participating in the half-marathon. From the entries received through January 1, 2007, the ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon organizers have confirmed that, approximately 45 percent are registered for the marathon and 55 percent for the half-marathon. Participants have registered from all 50 states and 18 countries.

"With the abundance of successful marathons in the U.S. and around the world, there is always a risk when launching a new event," said Ron Wayne, former U.S. marathon champion and director of running and volleyball promotions for Mizuno, one of the race sponsors. "[Race Director] Victoria Seahorn and her staff have developed a user-friendly, informative race website, have extensively promoted the race within the state of Georgia, and have attended many top national marathon race expos promoting the race on a national and worldwide level. As a result of all their efforts, the ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon is well on its way to reaching its participation goal of 15,000 runners."

Windermere Real Estate / Teton Valley to Sponsor Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team

The Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team has announced Windermere Real Estate / Teton Valley based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as its Official Real Estate Company.

"Developing partnerships with industry leaders is integral to the future of our sport and the future of our team in terms of promotion, visibility and success. Our relationship with Windermere Real Estate / Teton Valley will help us achieve our goals," said Nancy Hobbs, Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team manager.

According to Julie Bryan, owner of Windermere / Teton Valley, "As a member of the Mountain Ultra Trail Council and also as a past member of the U.S. Mountain Running Team, I believe in supporting my passion of running. My hours at work mean nothing if I can not place some of the money back into what I love. Windermere is a quality-over-quantity company and we believe in service, ethics, integrity and community. If I worked less, I would probably still be running at 4:30am. I am pleased to be a part of the backbone of the sport I live and breathe."

In addition to Windermere / Teton Valley, the USA National Team has been title sponsored by Teva, the official footwear of the team, since 2002. Its team uniforms are sponsored by official apparel sponsor SportHill, while 180s is the team's official ear warmer, glove and sunglass sponsor and FuelBelt, Inc. is the official hydration system of the team.

The Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team will compete at the 23rd World Mountain Running Trophy in Saillon, Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16, 2007. Last year, the U.S. women's team won this country's first ever gold medal at the competition.

To whom it may concern (and you know who you are);

For the past six plus months you have had to listen to us moan and groan about the building of this *#@ $*** house.  First you heard about the tree guy, then about the dirt guy, then about the well guy.  The whole episode with ComEd could be made into a Russian Novel.  And this was after the dead body was discovered (we have since found out about a second dead body that came ashore here twenty years ago).  This whole project had the feel of a Greek Tragedy or the building of a new home.

With all of this you have to be asking yourself two questions.  Are these people crazy and is this place a tarpaper covered fishing shanty or a mansion.  The answer to first question is obvious.  But to help you decide on how to answer the second you are cordially invited to an open house at the Baska’s Hangman’s Gulch on January 28, 2007.  The doors will be open from 12 noon until 4 pm.  In other words after church lets out but before the bars open.  We will be providing assorted eats and drinks and all are welcome.

Directions for those of you who think the world ends at 135th street:

Highway 57 south to Rte 17 (Change mules twice)

Rte. 17 east 4 ¼ miles to Sand Bar Road (change to an ox cart)

Take a right (south) on Sand Bar Road (get into a dog sled)

Go ¼ mile to Dudley Grove Road and go left

If you miss Dudley Grove Road the first time go to the helicopter and turn left at the missile.

The actual address is:  455 S. Dudley Grove Road; Kankakee, Illinois 60901 (We are actually in Aroma Park but the Post Office is geographically challenged)

You might also be advised to buy gas while you are down here, as the Toddler does not control taxes here, yet.

This is an open house/house warming but be warned – Anyone bringing gifts (other than those that can be consumed by the other attendees) will be made to do something obscene and most probably painful with the gift and their body.

There is a running gear store in the Frankfort Trolley Barn in Historic Frankfort that is closing down.  They're clearing out everything.  50% off, including shoes, all moisture-wicking clothes, etc.  They don't have a huge supply, but you're likely to find something that's a deal!

I have no idea what their hours are.  If you want more info, try a search on Google.  Just thought I'd pass this along, cuz Bill & I went in & dropped some change.  While we were in there we ran into someone who really likes the color orange...  It was their 2nd visit there that day!  (and just wait till you see his shoes)  Many of this AM's running group went after their miles.

Pancakers,

One more thing. So that we can keep track of the communications from members of our club that live in Park Forest, I would appreciate being copied on any communication with the Board.

Thanks folks.

Nieces and Nephews,

Mom Baska and I met with the Park Forest Board this morning to discuss the Scenic 10 in order to discern rumors from fact. Here's the scoop:

1. A definite decision has not yet been made as to the cancellation of the Scenic 10 in 2008.
2. If the Village Board does decide to cancel the Scenic 10, the 2007 running of it will likely be the last in order to ensure that it would go out on a high note.
3. The Board indicates that it is their intention to make the 2007 running of the Scenic 10 something special.
4. Difficulty in finding volunteers and continuing monetary losses are the issues confronting the board.
5. They need to hear from members of our club that are residents of Park Forest (see below).

The Board members were very receptive and open to our comments. We also presented the results of the recent survey that we took. The survey clearly confirmed that the presence, and cost associated with elite runners,  was clearly not an important factor as to why folks run this race. The Board also promised to keep us informed and in the loop as to their plan of action and decision making process.

As elected officials, the Board members want and need to hear from citizens of the Village of Park Forest. Therefore, it is very important that all club members that are residents of Park Forest contact Mr. Thomas Mick, Park Forest Village Manager with your thoughts regarding the Scenic 10 and why it should continue. Mr. Mick can be reached at 708 283-5602. His fax is 708 503-8560 and his e-mail address is tmick@.... Finally, his mailing address is 350 Victory Drive, Park Forest, Il 60466. It is critical that club members that live in Park Forest contact him ASAP.

All of you will be kept in the loop as we learn more. Stay safe...see you all on the trails.....

I still have a few jugs from the summer, so I'll put out some water
and gatorade at Schoolhouse, especially since about 4 other runners
from outside the group will be joining us on a long run out that way.

New Course!   7.45 miles in mud, what could be more fun than running with 2 extra pounds of SH*T on one's feet???   Does anyone know if the infamous downhill via the tow rope on one's rump is still within the race venue??

Over the last few weeks there has been some interest expressed
about the Deadwood/Mickelson Trail Marathon (yes there is a half too).
It is scheduled for June 3, 2007, with an entry fee of $68.00 at
this time. Room rates vary from $45 - $179 per nite for the local
hotels/motels. There are also campgrounds nearby.
     Please visit their website:
http://Deadwoodmickelsontrailmarathon.com for more info. It looks like
a fun race with a small field. If there is any interest in the trip, we
may be able to make it a club Road Trip.
Let me know.... thanks all Neal
