I just watched Joe Sakic's press conference re his retirement. I have to admit,
I had tears in my eyes a couple of times. He is not comfortable speaking like
that at all, but he did a pretty good job; it's evident that he put a lot of
thought composing his statement and get everything said that he wanted to say.
It was head and shoulders better than Elway's retirement speech--in which he
wept most of the time and kind of acted like a fool. (I can't say that aloud in
this town, but typing it is another thing) He should have typed it out and read
it like Joe did.
To say that Joe Sakic is a class act is the understatement of the year. He has
to be the best clutch player ever. He said that his back injury and then not
being able to get back to previous form was the biggest reason for retiring.
His oldest son (around 10 maybe?) was really sobbing. Sad!
I hate to even type this - but I think Peter Forsberg should have had the sense
to know it was over a couple years ago. I guess it takes a special person to
admit something like this.
Good news for us - the Sakics are going to continue to live in Denver!
I watched the press conference too, and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried. I
had to wake up a few minutes before 3 AM here in Manila. It's already 9 AM now,
and it's so worth it to not get that much sleep. I'd rather risk not being able
to work well today than not see Captain Joe's press conference.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that shed a tear or two. :) I didn't
even tear up when Roy retired. I really miss being able to watch a game and
cuss him out about staying in the net. You're right Peter should have probably
retired a few years ago.
Joe will be missed on the ice. It will be interesting to see what they do with
their youthful rebuilding.
You know Miss Haiku I cried like a baby when Elway retired. I wanted that damn
threepeat. Oh well at least the man knew to retire after all of those years of
being beaten up. I wish more pros would realize when their time is up and go
gracefully.
