Yep, that's the movie. From the first time I saw it I kind of
identified with the main character, with his obsessions and secret
sympathies and ability to see through the rhetoric. Shanghai at that
time was pretty much a western-operated city, the "Paris of the East".
The leading world powers all had settlements there, defacto colonies
I suppose. Communism ruined that, and today from what I have read,
Shanghai is again strong, but a little more shallow than before 1945.

It would be something if athletes could organize an alternate venue,
but I know that is not possible. I keep away from Chinese good
whenever possible already. I like the Tibetan flag idea. China
should be castigated and punished by all means possible. It is
disgusting how the west has pretty much always treated communism and
its brutality with kid gloves...alarming double standards by the
self-titled "liberators" of the world...and it's not coincidental that
some evils are chased and some are enabled.
