Just got off the phone with Al and got a first hand report. Bev feels very good about her 4th place finish and is just a little wobbly in the legs. But considering her coming off being sick felt strong. It was a little warm Al said, but not much wind so that really helped her bike.
Great job to Bev and now they can really enjoy the next week and relax.

Before we get to my race report, I wanted to thank all the TRI P's for this past
summer's weekend training. Relocating here this past year I thought that I
would have a long summer training on my own for IMFL. It was just the opposite,
I had many opportunities this summer to train with you guys. I especially want
to thank Mitch for hosting the weekend long rides and runs at the barn.
Leading up to race day I felt pretty good, no nagging injuries or weird pains,
which is always a plus!
Race morning came quick and started around 4AM. I had a great breakfast and was
off to check in and get body marked. I met up with the other guys I had gone
down with from Indiana and pumped up the tires and filled up the water bottles,
etc, etc. Rubbed on the body glide and got the wetsuit on. Walking out of
transition area behind the host resort down to the beach was incredible. All
the athletes, the spectators, Mike Reilly announcing, and the energy was just
incredible.
Once the cannon went off it was complete mayhem-total chaos! If you have never
experienced this type of swim start you are missing out. It is like survival of
the fittest and the hell with everyone else. The first loop went well for me,
about as good as to be expected swimming in WWF style. The second loop was a
little different. Coming into the second turn I was kicked right in the left
eye HARD! Hard enough to daze me and make me tread water for a minute or two to
make sure I knew my name. I saw stars and turned over on my back to make sure
that I was not bleeding (yes-I was kicked that hard). Once I started seeing
light out of my left eye I cleared my goggles out and kept on going. Coming out
of the water I had my wetsuit stripped off of me and then I stood under the
fresh water showers for about a minute (wish I would not have stayed under there
for 52 seconds now!) and rinsed the salt water out of my eyes and tried to allow
the cold water to cascade over my left eye. (I ended up with a shiner from the
kick in the eye!)
I ran through the swim to bike bag area and then went off to change into the
bike gear. The bike course was fairly flat and the roads seemed like they were
freshly paved, they were very smooth. I placed a pair of extra TRI shorts in my
special needs bag mid way through the bike and I have never been so happy to
have planned ahead. Wow that extra padding was like sitting on a feather
pillow! The bike course was jam packed for 90% of the 112 miles. It was
difficult to not ride two or three a breast in some areas and not be 7 meters
away from the guy/gal in front of you. I rode as safe as possible and managed
no penalties during the bike.
Off the bike and my legs felt pretty good considering I just rode 112 miles and
was able to hold down a good pace. I kept an eye on my Garmin and tried not to
get ahead of myself though. There were many times I was hovering around a 7:30
pace and had to hold my pace back down to an 8:15 pace, there was still almost 3
hours to go. I hit every aid station and nailed my nutrition right up to the
point when I started to get a bloated feeling in my gut. Around mile 16 the
pressure in my gut started to increase with every drink of water, Gatorade, GU
packets, and chicken broth. Once I choked it all down the pressure seemed to
ease a little. I was praying that I would be able to let a little pressure off,
but that did not happen. I am sure that everyone behind me was thankful for
that. I still had the spring in my step up until about mile 21-22 around the
point where I exited St. Andrews State Park. My quads started to rebel against
me and the fatigue began to settle in. I slowed down a bit and walked through
the remaining aid stations to take in nutrition and fluids to get me through the
remaining miles. Totally crashing was not what I wanted. As I hit mile 25 the
lights from the finish were visible and the crowds began to get larger and I
felt that charge of energy to pick up my run pace to the finish line for one
last mile. Crossing the IM finish line for a second time was just as exciting
as it was the first time. I did not watch my overall time, I only concentrated
on the discipline that I was in at that moment. I had calculated that I would
be able to finish in 11 hours and 30 minutes, and was able to finish in 11 hours
and 52 seconds. This was 1 hour and 28 minutes faster than my first IM. The IM
course can have those 52 seconds. I left all that I had out on the course;
however I will get those 52 seconds back at my 3rd IM....

I want to thank all the incredible people that make up our club! There have been so many words of encouragement, positive thoughts to replace negative ones out on the course, etc. Every time I thought about how much longer I had to go, I'd think about those words...focus on what you can do( Bev).or don't think of the whole thing, just a small section...run Pole to pole...( JoAn)...enjoy the journey and the people( Mitch, Reid, Rich)....so many people said such inspiring words!! I had few moments that I thought negative thoughts and they were quickly replaced! Mike McDaniel, thanks for the tips on packing those bags....I know there are many more people that said such helpful things and I thank you ALL! What a great group of people this club is made up of!! John Brown for updating everyone. How important that made me feel!
What an exciting time in my life, and you all helped me make that come true!

You are correct, Illini is that weekend too.
I figure I only have one chance to run my *first* marathon, so pick one that
stands out. Flying Pig should be one I'll remember when I can't remember
anything else. Illini doesn't hold much interest for me.

I know the 2009 tri season is just barely over but being the obsessive compulsive tri-geeks we are, we need to start thinking about the 2010 season. I know some of you have already started doing a little planning because, lets face it, if you want to do an IM, you better be planning a year in advance.
A couple of years ago, the club had a group go to the Grand Haven Trifest in Grand Haven MI. This was a great club/group race to go to because they actually offered 3 races: a sprint, an Olympic distance and a 1/2 IM. This allowed members to choose the race distance they were comfortable doing and not feel excluded. We had a great time even though Lake Michigan got a little ugly on race day.
To look at some of the pictures, click here: Grand Haven After the race, some of the club members even spent a little more time kicking back and having a good time in beautiful Michigan.
I have been keeping my eyes open for another race opportunity that would be similar to the Grand Haven experience and I think I have found a possibility. It is the Door County Triathlon in, where else, Door County WI. If you aren't familiar with where Door County is, it is just north of Green Bay, WI or about 7 hours north of Peoria. Door County is a very nice vacation area with lots of things to do. Triathlon with a little vacation tacked on the end - sweet!
Based on the comments I have read about the event, it is a first class event. What makes this race interesting is they offer a sprint distance race on Saturday July 17th and then a half IM on Sunday July 18th. Therefore, members can choose their distance or if they are feeling particularly fit, do both of them!!!
With so many events to choose from in the Midwest, there are going to be some conflicts. The Evergreen Triathlon is scheduled for July 17th, the Racine 70.3 on July 18th and I am sure there some other races that weekend.
I am bringing this up now because from my understanding, this race fills up very quickly. Registration isn't open yet but opens at midnight January 1, 2010. Bare in mind, this wouldn't be a club sponsored event, it is just an event a bunch of club members would be doing together; no different than TriShark.
Here is the link for the event: http://www.doorcountytriathlon.com Take a look at it, let me know your thoughts and if you might be interested. I figure the first thing would be to get signed up and then we could work on figuring out where to stay.

Mike,
It's very hilly. I've done the half -- maybe the hills are all in the first
1/2 of the course. Nice event with great momentos -- last year they gave out
laptop carriers with the Flying Pig logo.
I may be interested, but I'm going to try and do a marathon in June next year -
- out of the country -- but haven't had this cleared through the boss
(Roger). I haven't even asked yet...

I'm looking at running the Flying Pig Marathon (May 2) in Cincinnati as my
*first* marathon (yea...there was a marathon at IMCdA and I've done two
ultras...) and I'm willing to organize a group to head over for the weekend.
Scouting reports are that it's a fun race. Mid-size (4000 runners) with a
couple hills. Registration is $70 through the end of the year, $85 after that
(full marathon) and $60/75 for the half.

Congratulations Tri-P's. You did it and we are so proud of all of you!
I captured a screen shot of most of you finishing till the stream video had issues so I was not able to capture Denise or Tonya. But ladies, you are an Ironman and should be celebrating your victories!

Kathy,
If you are a slow swimmer, then you would be a perfect candidate to swim with
us! I am hoping to "unlearn" a few bad habits. Hope we will bump into you down
there at Pearce!
