You've gotten some good advice. I agree with the consensus that you should do Evergreen, but at your HIM pace. Then enjoy the day with your fellow Tri-P's!

Ok, so the last race I was planning on doing prior to my 70.3 debut at Steelhead was the Decatur tri (just under Olympic distance) on July 5th. It's looking like that may not work out, so I was wondering for you 70.3 vets out there, whether you think racing Evergreen on July 18th would be too close to my 70.3 race (August 1st). That gives me 2 full weeks in between. Judging by how I felt after the Olympic I raced last weekend, that would be enough time, but I've got a friend whose coach advises no races within 4 weeks of your 70.3 race. Just looking for other opinions out there.
Thanks,
Lindsay

Lindsay,
I did Elmwood (a sprint) a week before I did Steelhead in 2006. Now I could
attribute my lackluster performance at the HIM to the race a week before, but
it'd be more appropriate to attribute it to
1) general lack of training for the HIM (about 500 miles on the bike leading up
to the race)
2) going too hard on the bike
If you do Evergreen, throttle back your effort to be consistent with your HIM
goals. If you expect a 33 minute HIM swim (1:43 per 100m) shoot for a 25:40
swim instead of 24 (like you might if you "race" Evergreen). Same for the
bike/run. Resist the urge to go out harder at all times at Evergreen (think of
it as practicing patience for the HIM pacing). Yea, you *could* go faster
(which is exactly what you'll be saying to yourself at mile 10 of the HIM bike),
but by mile 54, you'll be glad you held back (or at least, by mile 7 of the run,
you'll be glad you held back on the bike).

As Carey says, you should decide on the importance of the events, and pick one of the races to be the A race. That would probably be the 70.3. A races get some good tapering during the days leading up to it, so you are well rested. If you do Evergreen, and I think that you can indeed do it, then you probably won't want to do a lot of tapering for that event, and you would do the event as a workout, hold something back to be sure you don't get an overuse injury, and not be needing a week to recover from it. Make Evergreen a C race, do it for fun, and don't over extend yourself. Reid

I think the first question you have to ask yourself is: What are your objectives for your 70.3 debut? Since it is your first HIM, do you want to just finish and enjoy the experience? Is it a test run to learn about what your body can endure? Do you want to truly race and meet some time expectation?
If your objective is to just finish and enjoy the experience, no problem racing Evergreen - go for it. If it is a test run, again, no problem racing Evergreen.
If you are truly planning on racing the 70.3, I still see no problem doing Evergreen, just don't push it. Use Evergreen as the opportunity to work on your nutrition plan for the 70.3, practice your transitions, running on rubber legs, swimming with the masses. You can do all the training swims, bikes and runs you can but you still learn alot about yourself when you put it all together on race day.
My 2 cents worth of advice for 70.3 debut: just plan on finishing and enjoying the experience the first time. That advice holds true for anytime you step up the endurance ladder: HIM or full IM. It is a long day at the office doing these events and you just never really know how your body is going to respond. Nutrition is so important in these types of events and so many things cans go wrong out there - been there done that!!! Trust me, if you have a good experience, you will be back for more. Have a DNF because you went out too hard trying to race and you might never again fill out another entry form. I doubt that is what you want.

Hmmm..maybe I have the same coach as your friend. :) It depends on how you want to do at the 70.3. If you decide to do both I would take it easy at Evergreen..don't race it. If you are hoping to really kick some butt at the 70.3 I would skip it. I always feel fully recovered after two weeks, but thanks to my coach I am learning that maybe more recovery time is needed especially if you want to perform well! Have you thought about the olympic in Springfield?

It just depends on what you are trying to accomplish at the 70.3. Some of us race the week before doing a sprint or even a half marathon. If it is your A Race, then you could use the Oly distance as training but not race it. However, that is difficult to do. If the 70.3 is a B Race, then go for it.

Since it was associated with the new work boots I'd say you compressed a nerve which has slightly damaged it and it will heal. The nerves take so long to heal. I did the same thing with the aircast to the nerve on top of the foot and it's still not gone 6 weeks later.

Hey everyone,
So, for about the past 2 weeks part of my right big toe (if my foot were divided in half vertically, the outer half) has been completely numb! I wore a new pair of work shoes that really needed to be broken in one day, and that's when it started, but I have not worn them since. I've always had really good blood circulation, in that my hands and feet usually don't get cold, but I've always had feet that go to sleep very easily. Anyway, I'm beginning to get nervous b/c it has still not gone away. It's even numb when I'm bare foot. I didn't do anything traumatic to it, it just went numb one day. There's no swelling, discoloration, itchiness, pain, whatsoever, just numbness! I googled it and I found sources that say it could be diabetes, highly doubt that, but the one thing that could be a possibility is nerve damage in my spine, perhaps? I don't know, Rebecca, as a chiropractor, does this sound like a
possibility?
Apparently this is a common thing b/c I found a lot of people online who have the same problem and can't figure out what it is. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Good morning everyone!
This Sunday is our social. It has been suggested that, weather permitting, we
get together at a local park such as Jubilee (where our fall picnic is) and make
it a potluck. We might meet a little earlier, say 5 p.m. to enjoy the great
outdoors. Maybe some croquet, frisbee, or just visiting.
Of course, some might prefer to be waited on and meet at our usual stomping
ground.
Please let me know your preference.

I looked
at the DNR website. It doesn't mention that alcohol is not allowed, so I
assume that means it is. I don't think Rich B or G would have agreed to
this if it weren't. :) Had to say it! Love ya, guys.

Let's plan to have our social:
Sunday, May 31, 2009 JubileeState Park
Quail Meadow Pavillion
5 p.m.
Bring your own food, drink and place setting, including a dish to
share. There is a grill available, if you would like to cook
something. I'd bet one of our grill chefs would even cook it for
you! I'll bring a bag of charcoal & lighter fluid.
See you Sunday!

Insert movie times and more without leaving Hotmail®. See
how.

I usually go after work on tue and thur anywhere from 5-6:30. I was going during the day after I dropped my youngest at preschool around 1pm, also. Who knows when I'll go once the kids are out of school. :) Trista

I'm new to triathlon. I just competed in my first triathlon in Champaign at the Tri the Illini. I had a blast doing it. I am signed up for the Tri Shark at Lake Evergreen. Does anyone train together? I have been doing my swimming at 5 Points, running at home on the treadmill, and biking a few times outside but mostly on my trainer. Any tips for a newbie would be appreciated. Thank you.
I will be open to swimming in the open waters after June 10th at just about
anytime that we can all agree upon. June 10th the rest of the family will be
joining me in P-Town, this is more of a warning to the TRI-P's than it is an
announcement!

Picnic sounds good. Meat to grill or simple sandwiches?

Good morning everyone!
This Sunday is our social. It has been suggested that, weather permitting, we get together at a local park such as Jubilee (where our fall picnic is) and make it a potluck. We might meet a little earlier, say 5 p.m. to enjoy the great outdoors. Maybe some croquet, frisbee, or just visiting.
Of course, some might prefer to be waited on and meet at our usual stomping ground.
Please let me know your preference.
