ONE OF THEM IS MISSING" - ISAIAH..... ~ In 1976 at the age of 16 my folks
decided we would take a vacation in Florida. Disney World was a new attraction
and we had never been..For me the best part of the trip was stopping along the
way and checking out all the minor league baseball stadiums AND going to the
Kennedy Space Center. My entire family were big fans of NASA. We had a NASA base
in Hampton,VA that was where the original astronauts trained and was the main
NASA center until President Johnson moved it to his home state.I am old enough
that I was alive to witness man step foot on the moon in July 1969....When we
got to te Cape the thing I remember is the spooky feeling that no one was home.
Apollo had just two years earlier made another moon shot..But all the TV network
trucks were still here..But had weeds and trees growing over them...They were
faded...The only thing at the Cape that appeared in use was the main
building..It was if America gave up on Space after July 1969....NASA didn't but
their budget was slashed to levels that barely kept them going...The real reason
the shuttle was invented was that it could be cost effective and used again and
again...I visted the Cape many times after that in Spring training and it did
come alive again with the shuttle program...Yet since the Moon we Americans have
not been as involved in space...We MUST continue manned space exploration...We
are the only nation that can reach further into the skies....The moon
again...Mars...And who knows...Our thought and prayers are with the astronauts
and their families...Our hopes are with NASA and all of our current astronauts
and all future space travelers...... ~ "The same creator who names the stars
also knows the names of the seven souls we mourn today.The crew of the shuttle
Columbia did not return safely to Earth; Yet we can pray that they are all
safely home" - President Bush...That's the Field....Let's Roll!!
