Personal thanks go out to Kevin Porter for helping pave the way for
great coverage on Ed Acevedo's Fallen Heroes Ride Across America.
Kevin, the amount of coverage in today's paper was truly more than Ed
or I expected. Ed is truly grateful for your help in this effort.
The article in today's paper also helps to set a great precedent for
papers Ed may contact further along his route. It is our hope that
this initiative should help to produce a snowball effect.
We want to thank your reporter, Daniel Carson, and photographer,
Terry Barner, for a job well done.
Ed and I continued on yesterday from the News Herald to Tyndall AFB
where we met with Public Affairs officials for an interview. We also
met with other folks with whom I work and/or ride at Tyndall, just to
keep Ed's journey personal. After Tyndall, we braved rush hour
traffic leaving Tyndall until we could get to some back roads that we
could take to get to the VA Nursing Home.
We spent over an hour and a half there sharing Ed's story with a lot
of the old-timers. They really appreciated what Ed was doing. Ed
was also impressed with the quality of the facility and care there.
Ed's old tank unit was nicknamed "Hell On Wheels" and he carries his
old unit patch as an appropriate symbol of his trip. When he showed
it to the vets, about 5 of them erupted with approval as they had
served in the same unit in WWII.
The vets were somewhat astonished to learn from their questions of Ed
that he had no support vehicles following him, carried all he needed
with him, and that he could manage over 50 miles a day. They were
also impressed with his bike.
Anyway, I've got to wrap this up. Ed and I will be leaving Lynn
Haven momentarily to head west for a day. He plans to stop in Destin
for the night before continuing to Pensacola. I'll be returning home
by bike along US 98 after escorting Ed out to the end of CR30A.
Anyone who can find us along the way is welcome to join us.
Happy Trails,
Scott Nunn
