Well... from what I understand RW was not a happy individual. He really did
not like the spot light and did not thrive under the pressure. So... it is
understandable to leave, in my opinion. I hope that he finds whatever he is
looking for! I agree with fdb that most players over stay their welcome and I
don't see this happening, due to greed if nothing else, very often. But... I
kind admire that RW is putting his mental health and family in front of the all
mighty dollar. We all know this kid could get millions more but he is willing
to walk away and attempt to find some peace in his life.

***** A man has a right to live his life as he wishes. If Ricky doesn't want to play football anymore, that is certainly his right. He's not holding out for more money (that we know of). He's not demanding to be traded to another team, where he'd continue to do the same job for somebody to whom is not now under contract. He is simply making a decision to live his life in a different manner. As long as he hasn't chosen a life of crime, that's no more wrong than a career decision made by any one of us.

***** I do feel that he has ignored his obligation to the Dolphins to provide them with advance notice that would allow them to compensate for the loss of his talent. He says he's been considering this for some time. Well, he should have shared those thoughts with the Dolphins. While the final decision is most certainly his to make, the Dolphins paid him very well, and gave him an opportunity to play for a contending team over the past couple of years. Just walking out on them at this particular point is not right. Had he told them back in February that he was even giving serious consideration to retiring, the team would likely have chosen a different path in its entire off-season player acquisition strategy, including, of course, the Draft.

***** Yes, Ricky had a right to make this decision. But he has demonstrated a total lack of concern for others in making that decision without providing the Dolphins with a reasonable way to adjust. I can't accept the "Hooray for me, and everybody else can go to hell" attitude that this decision reflects. We are all obligated to ourselves and our families first. However, I don't believe that obligation eliminates a subordinate obligation to do what we can to be fair to others. But it's certainly in keeping with the disturbing trend in our society today.

***** As far as the on-field aspects of this, it may not be as devastating to the Dolphins as it initially appears. Remember that, IF head case David Boston plays up to his capability, they have one hell of a corps of receivers. Even their mediocre QB (whichever
"F-word" that turns out to be) can be dangerous with Boston, Chambers, and McMichael to throw to. And the Dolphin defense still figures to be well up in the top half of the NFL. While I definitely don't see them as a threat to win the Division, they are not, as was suggested earlier, a "bye" for anybody.

***** My guess is that they'll sign James Stewart to work as a tandem with Minor, and go to a "pass first" offensive strategy. They'll show up, and they'll win some games. About 6 or 7 would be my guess.

I was reading some message boards, and the Miami herald, over the
weekend. I didn't realize that he suffered from Social Anxiety
Disorder. Don't know much about it,but it's a fear of being around
groups of people in certain situations. I guess he had real problems
with things like press conferences, etc. In fact, he was a
spokesperson for the anti-depressant drug "Paxil". There are probably
a lot of things going on in his life that the casual fan is not aware
of. He did also state that his fine for substance abuse was a
contributing factor in his decision.

A teacher colleague of mine did this to me once. This person coordinated an
adjunct group which was important to the overall presentation of my school
band in parades and competitions. In early September my colleague informed
me that they would be taking the year off to rest and concentrate on the
classroom only. It really threw us for a loop and we had to scramble to get
a replacement for that year. I would like to have known about this in May
or June.

I see what the Fish are suffering through, and it could mean that RW had
deep seeded issues with the Dolphins which caused him to quit now instead of
earlier. Otherwise, why stick it to your team unless you bore a grudge of
some type?

I agree he has the right to live his life, but to quit just before training camp is inexcusible. I'm not going to say he should have loyallty to the team, because they can release him any time they want without reason or notice. But did he think about his teamates, who were probably hoping to make the playoffs this year. Or the fans who have supported him.

I remember seeing something about this when he first started with Miami. I
believe that it is not "sticking it" to your team in a situation like this but
it is about survival. And... he is making the decision to live. If you don't
have or know anyone with mental health problems then you may not be
sympathetic to this but as a former counselor to people that struggled every day
to get
up in the morning I think that he may have taken the correct road. Is the
timing good, no, but it is understandable. The pressure was starting to build
up. He was having to get ready to go back for training camp and I think that
was too much for him to take. I am guessing here but that is what I think
happened.

A-Train to Miami Unlikely

The Miami Dolphins are in the market for a running back, but they will
not find a for-sale sign on the Bears' Anthony Thomas.

Some rumors on the heels of the surprising news that Dolphins running
back Ricky Williams had retired involved the Bears dealing Thomas,
expected to be a backup, to Miami. However, more than one league
source said a deal between the teams is unlikely.

It's almost inconceivable Miami would dangle defensive end Adewale
Ogunleye, the one Dolphin the Bears would be keenly interested in.

2004 FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEW: CLE. BROWNS
-BY RICK SERRITELLA 7/14/04

Quarterback: With the signing of former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia the
Browns are hoping that they’ve finally found some stability at the position.
For the past two seasons they have seen Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb
alternate at the helm. Couch was a post June 1st casualty and signed a back
up deal in Green Bay while Holcomb remains on the team and will serve as the
back up behind Garcia. Garcia was banged up in 2003 and had a down season
statistically speaking, but in the three seasons prior he averaged 3,720
yards and 28 touchdowns. It must also be noted that he was playing on a
playoff caliber team and an extremely efficient west coast offense
predicated on intermediate passes. Garcia is an above average fantasy
quarterback but I don’t expect him to return to posting monster numbers,
mostly in part due to durability reasons.

Running Back: One of the biggest position battles that will take place in
training camp will be between William Green and Lee Suggs. Green is the
veteran and has been inconsistent on the field and a distraction off the
field. Suggs is the newcomer trying to earn his spot after battling
injuries his rookie year. In the end Suggs should come out victorious and
after a couple weeks the controversy will be a non-issue. By time fantasy
draft day rolls around the secret will be out and Suggs will not be viewed
as a sleeper, he will most likely be in the top half of leading rushers
among starting running backs.

Wide Receiver: The Browns depth at the receiver position is thin to say the
least. After a breakout year in 2002, Quincy Morgan will be depended upon
to rebound from his disappointing 2003 season. His production was cut in
half last year which opened the door for Andre Davis to make some plays.
Davis is expected to start opposite of Morgan with Dennis Northcutt serving
as the team’s slot receiver. Northcutt, the teams leading receiver last
season was able to resolve his contract status with the Browns and signed an
extension to stay on. He is also a dangerous return man, something you may
want to keep in mind if your league counts points for kick return stats.

Tight End: First round selection Kellen Winslow Jr. may make the biggest
fantasy impact among this year’s rookies. He automatically vaults himself
into the top four tight ends behind Gonzalez (Chiefs), Shockey (Giants) and
Heap (Ravens). He is a great receiver and should be utilized immensely by
head coach Butch Davis who recruited Winslow to come to Miami University
when coach of the Hurricanes. Bank on a minimum of 40 receptions, 600 yards
and 5 touchdowns with the possibility being even greater.

Fantasy Stud: Kellen Winslow Jr. – This rookie will be the most exciting
player to watch on the team.

Fantasy Dud: William Green – Most likely his final season in Cleveland as
they have had enough of his antics.

Fantasy Sleeper: Dennis Northcutt – If Morgan doesn’t return to his old
form, he could be the Browns leading receiver once again.

I bet Cecil Collins is still out there somewhere. Or they could
always give Lawrence Phillips a call and beg him to come back.

How about our beloved Sedrick Shaw?

Packers ex-GM Ron Wolf joins Joe Montana in praise of Tom Brady...

"The guy that makes them go is Brady," Wolf said. "He wins. He's the best quarterback in the NFL."

Better than Peyton Manning?

"Better than all of them. He's beaten them all. That's the reason they win, because of Tom Brady. Someone has to be the best, and he's the best at what he does at the position that is most important to have someone who is the best at what he does."

Better than Favre?

"Yes," Wolf said. "It's hard for me to say that. Aw, that's probably not fair to Brett Favre because I really don't know Tom Brady."

Heh, that's funny, I forgot about their legal troubles.

I remember tuning into a CFL game a couple of years ago, and to my
delight/shock, Shaw was the featured RB for one of the teams. And he
was tearing it up. Wait, maybe it was just a dream instead.

The Herald clarifies...

"A procedural clarification on the status of these players (Those on the active-PUP list): NFL rules stipulate that for a player to be put on "reserve"-PUP prior to Week 1 (which knocks them out of the first 6 weeks of the regular season), they must first be placed on the "active" PUP list prior to camp. Also, players on "active" PUP still count on the 80-man roster...

Here are some puppies...
Paxton, Colvin, Light, Wilson, Chatham & Fauria.
Rookie FAs Eric Alexander & Devote Peterson will also be on the sideline when camp opens Thursday.
*********************

Fauria has a pre-Patriots history of injuries.  Watson has an achillies "issue" and is still unsigned.  Therefore the TE influx.

Should Light have any difficulty returning to form we have Klemm.  God help us.

Wilson must have really torn something way back in Feb.

I think he's one of the 4 best draft picks in Patriots history (Hannah, Brady and Seymour being the other 3).  April 24, 2004 was one of the greatest days in Pats history.

I think he'll be a major force and that, in the next few years, knowledgeable football people will recognize him as one of the NFL's super-elite players (potential to be not just better - but much better - than Warren Sapp).

***** I am also very happy with the Pats pick of Wilfork, Joseph. However, let's wait until he plays a game or two in the NFL before we put him with a HOFer, a 2-time SB MVP, and an All-Pro DT. I believe he may well wind up at that level, but it's nothing but "potential" at this point. I remember Ken Sims, Tony Eason, and Chris Canty just as clearly as John Hannah, Russ Francis, and Mike Haynes! We'll know which group Wilfork belongs in after a couple of seasons.

I would put Curtis Martin as one of the best draft picks too. Wouldn't you?

I would agree with that. To me, the great draft picks are the ones
that no one expects to rise to the top. Martin had injury issues in
college, so there were questions about his durability. Yeah, right.
Late rounders like Brady, Troy Brown, Terrell Davis... guys that come
out of nowhere. Those are great stories.

Along those lines; good story about Russ Hochstein in the Globe today.

***** Absolutely, Lisa. However, I was comparing only the best vs worst Round One picks. Thus no mention of Curtis, who was one of our our best "steals" ever in Round 3.

I was just reading a story about Charles Woodson (he is still
holding out) and I read the following clip

"A call to Woodson's agent, Carl Poston, was not immediately
returned Wednesday.

All-Pro linebacker Julian Peterson of San Francisco also is expected
to hold out as a franchise player. Peterson is represented by
Poston's brother, Kevin. Pace, the Rams' franchise player, is
another holdout whose agent is Carl Poston. "

Why is it that everytime I see their names, I feel like throwing up.

Note: if anybody hasn't checked out the cartoon "going Poston" you
should it's pretty funny. Here is a link to it.

Here's another one... going down to the wire.

By Tom Withers, AP Sports Writer | July 28, 2004
BEREA, Ohio -- Kellen Winslow Jr.'s agent spent four hours Wednesday
meeting with the Cleveland Browns, still hoping to have their top
draft pick signed before training camp opens.
Kevin Poston, the tight end's representative, visited with Browns
president John Collins at the team's headquarters, a possible sign the
sides want a deal finalized by Friday when the club holds its first
full-squad workout.

NFL R. Williams Admits Third Failed Drug Test

Dan Le Batard, of the Miami Herald, reports retired RB Ricky Williams admitted Thursday, July 29, that he learned of a third failed test for marijuana use and a potential upcoming suspension just days before informing Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt of his decision to quit football. Williams would be forced to serve a four-game suspension if he returned to play in the NFL. Williams also added that the Dolphins were not aware of the failed test or the results of his appealed second one. He said there were "a hundred reasons" for his retirement and his desire to continue smoking marijuana without reserve was only one of them. "I didn't quit football because I failed a drug test," Williams said. "I failed a drug test because I was ready to quit football."

So if a player puts money AHEAD of "quality of life"
he is "greedy" . . . however, if a player puts his idea
of quality of life ahead of money said player has
"a ten cent brain". Exactly WHERE should a player

Really great that they signed Big Cat Williams..IF HE is still a
player..Dillon can run in back of him and..this team will be able to
control the ball more!! A big pickup!! As far as the 3 holdouts?? Oh
well..they'll be a few steps behind..something that is NOT good for
them (the players.) As far as I'm concerned, it just will be less
competition..always NOT smart to shoot oneself in your foot as you
TRY to succeed!!
Hopefully going to Camp in the AM..have many gone before??

When part of the reason for retiring isn't so he can smoke his life
away maybe.... Some people seem to be stepping around the issue but
I call Ricky Williams a pothead and to me that gives him a "ten cent"
brain.
