Kevin Faulk will have some competition if the Pats bring him back.

Can Addai block the pass-rusher as well as Faulk?

He was a more than adequate blocker for Peyton. HIs injury a year ago really diminished both his effectiveness and, as a result, his playing time, last season. It will be interesting to see if the additional rest of another off season will return him to something close to what he was for the first few years in Indy. Until and unless I see that, I'll just sit at "pleased" with the signing; but not "pumped and jacked". :-)

I have great hopes for Ridley, from what we saw of him last season. But I'm wondering about Vereen. This signing, and the rookie FA earlier, makes me think that BB has the same concerns.

Hopefully Vereen just got off to a bad start by holding out at a short TC and will show some of the promise this year that BB saw when he drafted him.

If there is another problem with Vereen I look for BB to bring in a little more insurance.

Today, Mike Reiss posted a link to today's "practice squad" jersey numbers.  The practices are just for rookies and first year players.

No one has been given 93, or 54.  Antwuan Molden's number has been assigned to Tavon Wilson.  Rodney's number has been given out for the first time I can recall since Harrison left, but I'm sure it's the  first time it's been given to a defensive player: Fonzie got it.   Dont'a Hightower has been assigned 45.  Ohrnberger's jersey has been given out twice!!!!  66 has been given out twice.  I'm pretty sure NE will restore 10 to Jabar Gaffney.

But if you're Bama, worried we won't have Carter or Waters, this may be a reason to feel better.

Opperud is downright pedestrian running a 5.32 at his Pro Day.  He wasn't invited to the combine.  He put up 27 reps which is good for a long armed OT.  Solder did just 21.  He played in 11 games as a feshman and then started 13 as a So at LG.  He switched to LT for his Jr and Sr. seasons.  Montana played Tennessee this past season, which should show whether or not he can play.  Opperud was cut by Seattle on May 15th and signed today after clearing waivers.

Hi Susan,

There are many far better qualified to answer this on the list but I will take a stab;

Right now through to training camp is when the bulk of draft picks get signed with their repective clubs. Holdouts can take longer but most teams want their picks signed ASAP after the draft so they can participate in mini-camps etc during the summer. The picks are drafted on how they did in college and the different teams try to guess how skills in college will translate into a pro career. That is why you will hear the draft called a 'crapshoot' now and then.

The 'proving in training camp' that the players must do is to win a spot on the final roster. Right now rosters are expanded to 90 players per team. Before the season starts that number will be cut way down to 53 players and each club can keep so many players on the practice squad in addition to the 53.

The NFL has one of the most management friendly contract structures in sports. My understanding (someone correct me please if I am wrong) is that any contract that is not guaranteed can be voided at any time by the team. If a contract is voided that money returns to the team to be spent on another player(s).

hope this helps,

Harry

Proving themselves in camp hasn't been an issue since the early 70's.  Up until this year with the new rookie salary cap, a player drafted out of college would sign a medical waiver which would allow them to participate in rookie, mini camps and OTA's.  They wouldn'y sign their contracts until the day before camp started.  This would allow the teams to carry an extra6-10 players through until the start of camp.  Now with the new rookie wage scale in place, hey know what they are getting and the negotiations are easier.  The league adopted a new rulle which allows up to 90 players on a pre-season roster.

We had a rookie player tear his ACL during rookie mini camp in 2009.  Tyrone McKenzie was an ILB from South Florida, drafted as the last pick in the 3rd round.  The team gave him a 4 year contract euivalent to where he was drafted and kept him on IR for the year.   He didn't make the team the next year but was signed to Practice Squad.  He was released from the Practice Squad a few months later.

Rather significant news the Pats have signed Chandler Jones their first, 1st round pick.  This is great news because it allows Jones to participate in all team activities.  In the past, without the rookie wage scale in place, the top rookies would sign at the last minute (or be held out of camp like Bewn Watson).

Thanks, Mark, for your earlier answer to my contract question. I did manage to find an article that told a few things about the rookie contract updates from last year's lockout. I'm still confused but I'll keep trying to find things....

I've been a fan for a long time but I've never really thought about the contracts one way or the other. I think that I figured the draftees (rookies out of college) would get a low salary until they proved they could play. To me, those huge amounts they give them before they've even gone to camp are one step short of ridiculous.

Okay, they signed Jones--so now what? He gets his money no matter what? IF he (or any other brand-new rookie) goes to the mini camps, activities, etc. and on to regular camp and just bombs, does he still make their final roster automatically? IF he gets hurt or if he's so bad they ask what kind of koolaid they were smoking on draft day, is he still on the 53-man roster and receives the $$?

Have the Pats had any activities and if so, how have they gone?

Very good news! I don't believe that a player can perform as well as he did for the Patriots last season, without having enough left in the tank to be, at the very least, above average for at least one more season..

From all that I've seen and read about his performance since he joined the team, I agree completely, Harry. I believe that our receiving corps, especially when you include our 2 All Pro level TE's, is more than deep enough without Ochocinco. But, of course, I don't pretend to have anywhere near the knowledge of skill and performance as BB. He'll make the final decision, and, at least going into the season, I'll go with it.

Based solely upon the old "on paper" analysis, I think the Patriots could set new records in passing offense this year. They are clearly capable of doing damage at all distances, as long as Brady's arm and accuracy are still there for the deep game. In the combination of Welker, Lloyd, Gaffney, Stallworth, Hernandez, Gronkowski, and possibly Gonzalez, they have all of the receiver skills covered: speed, quickness, strength, hands, and YAC ability. Truly awesome potential there! And the OL appears solid enough to give them the time to take advantage of all of it!

COME ON SEPTEMBER! GO PATS!!

I think this article spells it out. Ocho is too far down the depth chart to make the team. I didn’t see Gonzalez mentioned in the article, though. Maybe I missed it. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1189067-projecting-the-new-england-patriots-wide-receiver-depth-chart/page/2

GO PATS!!
