I'm not only happy that the Patriots have a bye this week. I'm happy that Daylight Savings Time is ending. Ed can obviously use the extra hour of sleep!

I find it really sweet that you can propose a league-wide bye week.

I don't bet on football, nor do I play fantasy football, and I won't, because I want to watch the game on the field. ( Homer Simpson once told Maggie: "that's Daddy's favorite team.  He wants them to lose by fewer than six points!"  I don't want to be watching New England attempt a comeback against the Bills and have to yell at Brady: "No, you idiot, not Watson! Throw it to Moss, you crippled retard!"

But the reason the league will NEVER schedule a bye week is the same reason the league insists on letting Vegas know several days in advance who has a bad knee or sore shoulder: the league founding by bookies has always owed a chunk of its prosperity to the interest generated by gambling.

Now, remember, when the NE Patriots won SB 36, it made them the very best of all 31 teams, which meant every team had to have a bye week, because otherwise, they'd have had to pay Jim Boeheim to find them a cupcake to schedule the week the rest of the NFL was unavailable.   And there are still some people who own teams who would accept their 1/32 of the booty should the league expand to 33 teams, say by giving London or Los Angeles an expansion team.

And so, if god can promise me for eternity a 32 team league playing a 16 game schedule, I will take that deal, and give up betting the Over for a week, which, since I don't any way, will be a sacrifice I'll gladly make, and if god says "hell, no" to an 18 game schedule, I'll insist he share the credit with George.  I know guys can get hurt on every single play, and I know plenty of players would agree to the extra money if that was how the league went from 4 and 16 to say 2 and 18, but at least now, the guys who've been in the league for a year or five take 20% to 60% less of a beating in August than they do from September to January, and long-term, when they're my age and trying to walk or remember their names, every little bit counts.

Now, during this bye week, does anyone have  a good link to whether that bubble wrap stuff could be incorporated into the helmet to lessen the impact of helmet hits???

We are very fortunate to get the bye week at this particular place in our schedule. A week to heal some bumps and bruises (and worse) in near mid-season is a definite plus over having a bye in Week 4 or 5. I have always felt the the "staggered" bye week policy is unfair, within a given season. The teams getting it later, closer to the playoffs, get a clear advantage, IMO, over those getting it early. (As an avid Fantasy Football player, I also hate this process for that reason. It really screws with your roster changes, requiring some careful moves to try to weave through the land mines of bye weeks for your best players.)

I don't understand why the NFL doesn't feel that they could come up with some outstanding programming to fill a "common" bye week. This would be the one I'd suggest - the first weekend in November. It is, after all, the weekend when they compete with the World Series. (This old school baseball fan can't believe that there's no more "Mr October". Baseball in snow, and temperatures in the 40's or lower. Nice.)

As for our team, the BB plan is always to do the "self analysis" for much of the bye week. There isn't time for a thorough review of our own play in the one week span between most games; although, of course, there is always review of the last game film, and teaching points to be gained from that. This week long review adds the ability to look for, and eliminate, negative tendencies or "tip offs"; as well as study the progress of players through the first 7 games. Who's getting better? Who's slipping back? Why? What did we do that worked well, and should, perhaps, be done more often? What have we been doing that rarely works, and should, perhaps, be dropped from the playbook?

I fully expect the Patriots to come out of the bye week a much stronger team, in every way. BB is certainly famous for his ability to analyze and plan, when given extra time. This particular season, with Mayo now healthy, and Guyton and the amazing McGowan more experienced; I'll be very surprised if the Dolphins have much success with the Wildcat formation. I am a little concerned about Warren, since, as usual, we have no information on the status of the injury he suffered in London. But it does seem that A. Thomas has received a wake up call, and should be more of a factor on that side.)

As for this week, I share your thoughts, Randy. The first game here (which now begins at 1 AM, rather than midnight, thanks to the ending of Daylight Savings Time) will be the media favorite - Farvings ... I mean, Vikings ... at Green Bay. But I'll try to watch the Dolphins - Jets game on my laptop, if my internet signal holds up. An upset by the Dolphins wouldn't shock me, and would be the preferred outcome. The other games that I'll be checking on the scoreboard are the 49ers - Colts (which has little hope for an upset, IMO), and the Broncos - Ravens, which is really tough to call. Could be a great game that I may switch to now on then on the internet.

It should be a fun weekend of football, without the usual accompanying tension and soaring blood pressure of Patriots games! :-)

George

I might be in the minority and it usually isn't this way for me but...I'm glad to have the bye. I love that we
finished a couple of easier opponents with a clear and definitive break that let's us really focus and prepare for a
very telling month of November. I don't like that Tom got the Offensive Player of the Month for a few reasons but
ultimately this week off I can watch a few of our opponents ahead and think about our resting, healing and getting
ready to start the second 'half' of the season.

I'm going to enjoy either team losing in the Jets-Miami game and take comfort that we control our destiny at this point
which is what I always hope exists for us every game we ever play. THat way we get what we deserve each and every
time. Rooting for teams to lose to help us is often an excercise in futility. Neither Joey Porter nor Rex Ryan can be
disappointed enough in the results of their game so I'll hope it's quality fun football which makes it clear to the
Patriots they need to earn their wins against each of these teams.

Now Indy and Denver losing will potentially help us down the road so I might have a little extra hope there but
ultimately it's a relaxing weekend with low investment for me emotionally in any of the results.

Go Pats!

So the commercial in question does have my arm and tattoo and was shot back on
the Saturday before the opener on Monday
night. It was shot with Tedy being a feature and as you'll note he doesn't seem
to be in the commercial anywhere.
This is apparently because there are multiple versions of the various VISA
commercials and a Tedy tribute in particular
is still awaiting release.

It's funny to spend an entire day with a lot of Pats fans as extras for a
commercial and doing a few specialty shots
only to have just my arm and tattoo make it. Likely it will appear on youtube
eventually and if so I'd love the link.
It aired on Fox during the Pats in London weekend and is now steadily being
released on other stations.

I'm hopeful to see a cool Tedy piece done eventually.

I really don't see much drop off there, as far as the starting position goes. No knock on Green; but rather praise for Wright, who has played very well this season in his limited roll. The concern is for the backup spot that Wright filled. Who steps in with the versatility and production that Wright brought in relief?

I think Prior might be that back-up you were inquiring about. He's had some
really solid flashes thus far and is
probably ready to step up a bit in back-up.

I also think Derrick Burgess was a lot more effective against Tampa than most
people realize. He wasn't stellar but it
was his best game and may be the Bucs poor play or his sign of getting more
comfortable with our complex schemes.

This would be a great time for Morris to return, with his power running
game. The Jets have lost their "brick wall" NT, Jenkins, for the season. We
got a good look at what that means to their defense in their loss to Miami.
The Pats should now be able to run up the middle, and, with no need to
double-team Jenkins, provide better protection for Brady on pass plays.

Let's hope this report is accurate. It would be great to have Sammy back for
the Jets, as long as he's physically really able to give close to 100%.

That will be rough for them...nature of the game as injuries mount but I still
always want to play teams with us and
them both at full strength. I know we overcame injuries a few times and failed
to do such a few times but the most
satisfying wins are head to head proving the better team on the field.

I have little doubt that next Sunday night Peyton will still be very good and we
will have a tough game on our

But first...it's all about Miami. The preview is up on my webpage btw.

Good article, as always. Tedy's inputs are great.

The element that grabs me most in this game is his note about Pat White. It
almost seems that the Dolphins have kept him off the field intentionally,
waiting to spring him on the Patriots. Through 8 games, he has exactly 16
pass attempts (6/16/31yds, 1 INT) and 11 rush attempts for 38 yds). I'll
have my eyes open for that, as Tedy suggests:

"Dan Henning is the Dolphins' offensive coordinator, and with that I think
there is a high possibility the Patriots will be seeing a new wrinkle. The
Patriots were the team initially caught off guard, and this year I think the
new wrinkle could be Pat White. He can run the Wildcat and also be an
accurate thrower as he showed in college at West Virginia. So that will be
interesting to watch."

In any case, I fully expect to see more pass attempts than usual out of the
Wildcat against the Patriots; whether by White, or following pitchouts from
Brown to Henne. Use of this formation as a nearly pure run formation has run
it's course against good defensive teams. But increasing use of the passing
options may give it a renewed life. Hopefully, the Patriots secondary will
be prepared for that metamorphosis, and postpone that renewed life.

George

I also think the Pats need to beware a new wildcat wrinkle involving Pat White, but whereas Tedy Bruschi has brought up White's passing ability, there's another big concern. Remember, the wildcat is really the old single wing offense. Traditionally, the fullback handles the ball on most plays whether he keeps it himself, hands it off or passes it. It's best to have a player who is a good runner between the tackles. Miami's Brown can handle shotgun snaps, run between the tackles, hand off and throw well.

Despite his arm, there are a few factors which limit him as a passing threat.

1. He doesn't have a QB's passing experience, so he's probably not throwing unless he's absolutely sure it's open. That minimizes, but it doesn't eliminate him as a passing threat.

2. The QB shifts out as receiver. With Pennington and Henne, Brown loses a truly viable receiver. Chad Pennington and Chan Henne will be open if a defense totally ignores them, but neither guy can beat most NFL defensive backs or linebackers.

Pat White has the speed and athletic ability to beat defensive backs and linebackers. Leaving him uncovered would be devastating for defenses. Plus, he's more dangerous than Henne and Pennington on an end around. So yeah, White, an experienced QB is a threat throwing the ball, but beware him as a receiving threat too.

Another danger. Imitating Denver's wild horses. Remember how  Orton kept going in motion and ending up under center to throw against simplified coverages? White poses a double threat doing that. He could stop and pass like Orton OR he could use his speed around the end on a run.

We should have drafted him like we were supposed to!  That was a pure option look (ala Steve Grogan).

Great seeing a 300+ lb guy run the ball back. Guess it's just a matter of
time before we see Wilfork come lumbering up-field with the return. Might
be a pretty good strategy - I sure wouldn't want to try to
open-field-tackle him.

It can definitely be an effective change of pace. But we all know that a running QB can't last long in the NFL. That's especially true of a little guy like White. Still, if they continue to use him as part of their three different sets, the Dolphins will continue to be very tough on defensive coordinators. Preparation is tough enough against one offense. Preparing for three significantly different offenses has to be a nightmare.

The Good
- Randy Moss remains one of the best WRs in the league. He is just a beast.
The stiff arm was just textbook as he made that TD look effortless. He made
another beautiful sideline grab for a first down as well. Oh yeah, another 1
handed grab to set up a TD to boot.
- Maroney was a stud yesterday. He consistently ran hard, hit the hole with
authority and initiated contact at every opportunity. I would love to see him
more active in the passing game as he really has the talent to be something
special when he is in space but that's not how this O is set up.
- Ghost was the difference maker in this game. The 4 FGs were nice but the
kickoffs in the first half never let Ginn touch the ball. Even when we had an
offsides call on a touchback, that didn't phase him at all. He just cranked one
out of the end zone. Impressive stuff.
- The OL gave Brady time all day to find the open guy. Even the sack in the red
zone was OK. No one could get open but the line held up for quite a while
before they got to Brady.
- TBC/Burgess/AD played a nice game as well. They were able to generate
pressure on the QB and blew up quite a few of the wildcat plays. AD had his TD
overturned (correct call) too.
- Brady missed Moss once deep on the INT but other than that, was flawless. The
falling down under pressure 3rd down completion to Welker was a special play.
Hitting the deep balls and the intermediate passes all over the field. Nice job
by a great field general.
- Vollmer did a fantastic job on Taylor. He got some help from the TE and RB at
times but he was very solid against one of the premier pass rushers.
- Our secondary played really well. We didn't give up much though the air and
made the plays when we needed to. Springs made one play on the ball where he
should have had an INT, at the very least a pass defended but the ball just
glanced off his arm for a completion.

The Bad
- The D during the opening drive of the 2nd half was terrible. Miami stayed in
the wildcat the entire time and just ate us alive. Twice, we couldn't get a
stop on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1. We gave up a TD on another 3rd and 1 when we
blew the coverage. We just looked confused the entire time. We turned it
around after that not allowing another point though.
- I would have loved to see BJGE come down with that TD catch. He did
everything right but just couldn't hold on when he hit the ground. That would
have been a nice play for a young player to have.
- How do you tackle a QB in this league? I thought Chung's hit was pretty
clean. He didn't lead with his helmet, his lead with his facemask. It was a
textbook hit, just that it was on a QB. The league has to stop this BS.
- Both turnovers we created were overturned. One on a penalty, the other on a
review. We need to create more turnovers. With our O, a short field means
points.
- Houston misses a 41 yard FG to send it into OT against the Colts. They got
lucky.

The Ugly
- Out of time in the 2nd quarter? Not when you are at home. There is no way we
should have gotten that FG off in time. Brady should have spiked the ball and
just taken the 3 points. Don't know what he was thinking there.
- Late in the game, why did we even consider going for it on 4th down. The
gimme FG from 35 yards out makes it a 2 score game. Don't even fool around with
it and take the points. Instead we line up to go for it and take a false start
penalty. It moved us back 5 yards and made it a more difficult kick. Any other
penalty at that point and we are looking at a really tough FG. If BB was even
considering going for it, I say that was dumb.
- The time out on the 4th and 1 run where Maroney easily picked up the first
down brought back memories of Baltimore. Then we go for a keeper and make it
because Miami, I guess, doesn't play us enough to realize that when the center
is uncovered, Brady sneaks the ball.
- Did Joey Porter play in the game? I didn't see him on the inactive list
anywhere. Maybe he was too busy running his mouth to play in a key divisional
game.
- The CBS halftime show is all commercial now. They go to commercial after the
whistle, they go to commercial after showing a ad saying it's coming up next and
they go to commercial after giving us 30 seconds of blather. Their ticker was
even broken.
- The Giants continue to collapse. What a choke job that was. An INT with 3 to
go and the ball inside the 10. They have to settle for a FG and then a
defensive collapse. They even botched a short FG.
- How do you lose to Tampa?

Dave
