***** I am now wondering, during this week of useless trivia and such, how many of the Chuck Noll Steelers were with the team for all  4 of their Super Bowl wins. I have no idea, and I'm too damn lazy to try to do the research on it right now. Maybe I will later. I'm sure the rosters for the first and last of their 4 are available; so it shouldn't be that difficult.

***** For me, it will begin tomorrow. I'll be watching my three "3 Games To
Glory" DVDs, one each day, to review the greatness that has been the New
England Patriots of the Bill Belichick era. In between, I'll watch the NFL
Super Bowl Collector's Set DVDs; or as many of them as I can get to. I have
only the first 3 sets, SB's I thru XXX. I bought them years ago, and I
actually never opened them until last week. There are some nice "extras" in
there, in addition to the game summary films that are broadcast on ESPN ever
year during SB week. ***** As I compare my personal feelings about this game, I find that it
comes in second, in terms of my desire for victory. Nothing can ever match
the desire I had, or the reaction I had, for the Patriots first Super Bowl
win. I guess you could say that such a statement would put this one fourth,
rather than second, since it took 3 shots for the Patriots to win their
first. But I put those first 3 appearances into a package as 1, since the
desire was just "carried over" from the devastating loss to the Bears,
through the loss to the Packers, into that incredible upset over the Rams in
SB 36, for our first Lombardi Trophy. ***** The next two Super Bowls were great, of course. Like all Pats fans,
I'll treasure them forever. Each one elevated the respect earned by the team
I had supported through some of the lowest periods of any team in the NFL,
in the years from their creation in 1960 to that win in SB 36, to a level
that puts them solidly into any discussion of "The Greatest NFL Team of
All-Time". A win in this one will make them the only team in NFL history to
complete a 19-0 season. A win in this one will make them only the 4th team
in NFL history to win at least 4 SBs. A win in this one will make them only
the 2nd team in NFL history to win 4 SBs with the same QB and Head Coach
leading them on and off the field. A win in this one will make them the only
team in NFL history to win 4 Super Bowls under the challenges presented by
the Free Agency rules that make continuity much more difficult than it had
been prior to those rules being created. ***** This one will, IMO, make the argument for the New England Patriots of
the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady era to be recognized as "The Greatest Team In
NFL History" very compelling. It will most certainly earn them my vote for
that title! George

I was looking for one of the Superbowl programs. Not
the ones you can get anywhere, but the ones they sell
inside the stadium. When I went to Jacksonville I
bought two. One is a frame with ticket!

Speaking of tickets, I would be willing to buy any
used tickets from the Superbowl. If this game is as
historical as I think it will be, I want to have a
piece of that. There were people outside of the
stadium buying the used ticket stubs in Jacksonville.

I would be willing to pay up top $20 for one of those
tickets if the Patriots win.

***** Well, it's now 3:30 PM on Wednesday here, and I've only watched the
NFL DVDs for SB I thru SB VI. I haven't started the run through the "3 Games
To Glory" DVDs yet. I'm saving those for 1 each day on Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, as the final warm-up for SB XLII on Monday morning. So, I'd have to
average 6 per day to get through the 30 SBs in the sets I own, with those
Patriots DVDs inserted among them. Possible, I suppose, but not probable.

***** In any case, I'm going to take a football break for a couple of hours,
and watch a movie or something. Then, I'll move on to SB VII, which capped
the 1972 season. ... Hmm ... seems I've heard that season mentioned
recently. What was it they were saying about it? ... ;-)

Has anybody else been watching the Super Bowl re-broadcasts they have
been doing on the NFL Net? Not just the Pats ones but I think they
are running all of them. It's pretty cool to see how the broadcasts
have changed over the years. It was also strange seeing the
broadcasts of the first 2 Pats Super Bowls, I have seen the NFL films
1/2 hour review of those games, but you forget what it was like. I
forgot how many chances the Pats had in the first quarter against the
Bears, you look back on the lopsides final score but I wounder how
differently it might have turned out if the Pats had scored a TD of
their first possesion instead of a FG. I also forgot how Tony Eason
looked like he was ready to crap himself everytime he dropped back.
In the Packers SB, Bledsoe really looked bad, they were down 2 scores
wtih about 9 minutes left in the 4th when Bledsoe threw a deep ball
to Jefferson, but he threw it off his back foot (for no apparent
reason) and it was underthrown and intercepted GAME OVER.

One other thing, how many times has John Madden broken out the little
nugget about the biggest gap is sports is between the winner and
loser of the Super Bowl. I swear I heard him use that on at least 3
different intros.

Here is an interesting question for the stat mavens. Who holds the
record for most Super Bowl apperances for a player and for a coach?

I'm thinking Charles Haley leads for players (just a guess) and I
have no idea who leads for coaches but I have to think Dante is in
the top 2 or 3.

Well, I answered my own question. Well Part 1 anyway.

6 appearances by Mike Lodish, Buffalo, XXV-XXVIII; Denver, XXXII-
XXXIII

As for part 2, I only see a listing for head coaches (FYI, Shula
leads with 6 appearances). I was also thinking, this will be Bill
Belichick 7th super Bowl (2 with the Giants, 1 with the Pats as DC
and 4 with Pats as HC).

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. (Wow! I think that's
the best opening line I've ever created. I predict that it will become a
classic!)

I just watched the NFL DVD production of SB VII. That was the game that
capped the perfect 17-0 season for the Miami Dolphins. You know, that would
be the season that is brought up every time that a team has gone 5-0 to
start a season since then! If you haven't seen the whole presentation from
the NFL "Super Bowl Collector's Set", it contains a summary of the NFL
season; the NFL Films game summary; and a couple of "Extra Features",
including a summary of the Dolphins perfect season, with interviews of Shula
and several Dolphin players. It was put together in the year 2003.

Watching this presentation was quite an experience for me, both on a
personal level, and as a Patriots fan. You see, 1972 was a pretty eventful
year for me, as well as for the Dolphins. I was just one year removed from
my tour of duty in Vietnam. I had come back to the USA in January of 1971. I
spent much of the next two years obtaining acceptance of my proposal of
marriage to my wife, Suwanna. All of that done by phone and mail. Once she
agreed, I was engrossed in the frustrating process of arranging for her
legal entry into the USA. (It's tough to get into this country LEGALLY, you
see!) That effort culminated in her move from Thailand to the USA in
September of 1972, and our marriage on October 14.

Along with all of that, I was trying to get my civilian career in business
going, and doing pretty well with it, in the newly created field of
computerized Material Requirements Planning. (No need to bore you with more
details on that subject!) All in all, as I said, pretty eventful.

Of course, I had been an NFL fan since the mid 50's, and had committed to my
first "marriage" in 1960, when the Patriots were created. I had been a NY
Giants fan before the creation of American Football League. But once I had
my own home team, the Boston Patriots, I was among those who hated the
arrogance of the National Football League, and the fans of that league. That
carried on, as you older folks will recall, for many years after the merger
of the old NFL, and the AFL, into a single league. The AFC and the NFC were
still very fierce competitors in 1972.

That's the background that I took into the 1972 season, and that season's
Super Bowl, played in January of 1973. All of that created an unusual mind
set for this normally totally addicted NFL fan. I realized, as I watched
this NFL DVD presentation, that I had really been more detached from the
season itself that I have ever before realized. With all that was happening
in my life, I never really got caught up in the Dolphins' "perfect season"
thing. I hadn't remembered that, as the season review, created in 1973,
stated, "Sportswriters ridiculed their soft schedule" even then. I hadn't
remembered that the Washington Redskins team that the Dolphins defeated in
that Super Bowl was the "Over The Hill Gang", coached by George Allen, and
with Billy Kilmer ... Billy Kilmer, for crissake! ... at QB, in place of the
injured Sonny Jurgenson.

I was reminded that 1972 was a strange "transitional" year for offensive
strategy in the NFL. It was labeled as the "Year of the RB" by NFL Films,
because the now familiar zone defense had just begun to take hold throughout
the NFL, and no team had yet found a way to consistently beat it with a
passing game. Offenses had reverted to very "vanilla" schemes, limiting
scoring, and maximizing the opportunity for basic, unimaginative offenses,
like that of the Dolphins, to succeed.

I was also reminded, however, that, despite my current resentment of the
arrogance of Shula and some his 1972 players today, I was cheering as loudly
as any Dolphins fan for them to win that game. They were, after all, an
"AFL" team. In 1972, as I noted earlier, the acrimony between the old NFL
and AFL teams, and, perhaps even more so, their fans, was still very strong.
I was cheering for every AFC team (except the Raiders) for many years after
merger. So, while I am now very anxious for my Patriots to put those 1972
Dolphins deep into the "archives", and end their annual media attention, I
was (forgive me, Pats fans) 100% behind them in SB VII!

Now, however, one of the things I enjoyed most in watching this DVD was the
reminder of the 1989 "Dream Bowl". It was a computer created "game", using
old film to simulate the plays created by the computer, matching those 1972
Dolphins against one of the great Steelers teams of the 70's (I forget which
season they used!). The Steelers won that game, 21-20; and the DVD shows
Larry Czonka coming to a boil over that result. Hilarious!

I may have bored the hell out of a lot of you with this. There's no
explosive punch line to it. That's all there is. But I have to tell you that
the importance of that season, and that Super Bowl, in view of the game
that is about to be played this weekend, was really intensified for me when
placed into perspective with my personal life at that time, and with my
"evolution" as an NFL fan. It was one hell of a trip down memory lane!

Saw that the Giants flight to Az. had been delayed as some of the
players had the flu and one of the DB's had an involuntary protein

before they could leave.

And now today on ESPN2 this morning the "doctor" of the network

OK, since all of you (I think) are outside Austin’s little blue enclave down here in red state Texas, I don’t think this counts as shameless self-promotion.

I’m kinda proud of my ad for the local edition of The Onion (in which we advertise weekly), so I’m passing it along for what I hope is a chuckle.

Enjoying the hype,

That according to ESPN First take this morning. They mentioned that
his contract was only for this one year but that he wants to end his

As I and many others have predicted, I think he will do what it takes

Right now im worried his personal and legal problems could cause problems with a future contract. let me state though, that this has no bearing on the superbowl. just the immediate future after it.

Saw that the Giants flight to Az. had been delayed as some of the
players had the flu and one of the DB's had an involuntary protein
discharge on the plane. Hence the plane had to be emptied and cleaned
before they could leave.
And now today on ESPN2 this morning the "doctor" of the network
reported that the flu had spread to a few more players. Close to a
dozen of them.
Erdoboy - Glad we got that out of the way a few weeks ago and that we

Subject: [patriotzip] Nineteen Seventy Two

George
"I don't have a whole lot of what-ifs. We won three Super Bowls," (Tom
Brady)

No doubt about it I'll take any victory in this game but honestly I think it's a very different game from the last time we played.  I don't think they embarass our defense in the redzone again and I don't think we settle for field goals.  When I re-listened to the game and broke out the gamebook from nfl.com I was impressed by how many opportunities I thought we let sleep and how many opportunities they capitalized upon.

Ultimately I think if it is a close game I wouldn't want to be the team facing Tom Brady and this offense.  Every bit of lead we get puts more pressure to take them out of their game and that is what I think leads to a steady rout as the game progresses.

Of course my thoughts are worth very little - it's all about the focus, preparation and execution of our team!

Go Pats!

Randy, nice spot on WCVB, channel 5 tonight, also. You're very
optimistic, at 38-17. I'm a bit more timid I guess; 31-20.

A one point victory is all we need to be 19-0.

I checked on Amazon before you posted this. It is the same thing that
NFL DOt com does with the Locker room T's and hats. The pre-order both
teams and only the winner gets the goods. So that side of it is not
that much of a problem as there is a Patriots 2008 superbowl champions

When approached by a Boston reporter, Johnson said: "I'm going to be

put his hands together as if he were praying and looked to the heavens.

Johnson praised the Pats organization, and said he was happy for Randy
Moss for landing in such a good situation. Reiss also notes that he is
under contract with the Bungles through 2011, and they have no

Welker in the slot, and Stallworth or Gaffney as the #4?

The big gist of this nonsense is people thinking it's a "hex" to pre do stuff like that. remember the night before the 2001 afc title game in pittsburgh, the grounds crew in new orleans preparing the superbowl field for next week had already painted "steelers" in the afc endzone. so i guess if there's truth to this (the redsox, the night of game 7 in 2003, having the fenway grounds crew paint the world series logo) then i guess both teams will lose this sunday lol

through in what looked like one of the hotel function rooms, and
Brady looked like he was about to keel over.

I'd prefer not trying our luck at that again.

Ok, so I guess I'm not going to make it through all 16 weeks after all.  The season gets pretty boring after the Buffalo game (game 10) anyway. :-)

- The thing that's amazed me the most, watching these games over again, is how dominant the Pats managed to be despite not being "perfect".  There were plenty of plays (WR drops, dropped INTs, overthrows, bad blocking) that could have generated even more of an advantage.  The fact that they still managed to win every single game and not be "perfect" on the field on every play says a lot about the team, and how difficult it is to perform such a feat.

- The less said about that Cleveland game the better.  It was even more ugly than I remembered.  The one thing that stood out, though, was the play of #84, which was exceptional that day.  I know he was hurt for part of the year, but it made me wonder if he's still a question mark in people's minds?  Before the season started my perception is that a large segment of the fanbase wasn't too thrilled with him as the #1 TE.

- In contrast to Cleveland though, the following three-game stretch (at Dallas, at Miami, vs. Washington) was completely absurd.  Viewed now from the perspective of the rest of the season it looks even more impressive than it did at the time, which is saying something.  It's a stretch of dominance that I don't think we'll see duplicated anytime soon.  Brady was responsible for 16 TDs (including 2 "rushing") over those three games.  16!  They really looked like they were playing on a totally different level from the competition, it was quite something to behold.

- I have to admit, seeing Sean Taylor during the Washington game was a little jarring.  I had forgotten that was before his death.  RIP.

- Sure enough, Moroney looked pretty tentative during the first game back from the injury (Miami).  But already during the next game, I could
see some of that had worn off and he was back running hard.  Upon further review, I'm now more inclined to take BB's word for it when he kept claiming that Moroney had done just fine in the situations where they needed him.
