The Saints have moved closer to a trade for New
England safety Tebucky Jones, and a deal could be
completed as early as next week, league sources said
Thursday.
The deal, which has been discussed between the teams
for several weeks, stalled at the NFL owners meetings
last month because of differences about compensation.

The Patriots reportedly were seeking a second-round
pick in the April 26 draft for Jones, a five-year
veteran who has started 33 games for the Patriots the
past three seasons. The Saints offered one of their
two third-round picks.
But the Saints recently sweetened their offer by
including a late-round pick in this year's draft and a
mid-round pick in 2004.
Sources said the Patriots are weighing the offer and
could make a decision early next week.
The Saints have eight selections in the upcoming
draft, including two in the third round: Nos. 78 and
86 overall.
