hi ho all

i am sailer with medium skill level.

I am big fan of Tell tails and rely on them heavily.

But My new-used boat has no tell tails yet.

I got a new set of tails from West Coast but I can not find info on PLACEMENT?!

Anybody have any ideas about placement?

I will try to be early to get some free advice from you seasoned sailers!

There really isn't too much of a wrong way to place tell-tales as everybody has a location that they like, but here's what I like and where I place tell tales. 
 
Always place the tell-tales about 1 to 1.5 feet aft from the luff so that they are far enough away from the mast to be effective.  Also, make sure to place them so that the nylon or strong is coming out the aft end of the sticker that holds it to the sail so that the tell-tale flows better.  Place each tell-tale in the middle of a panel of the sail so that it doesn't stick to the seams of a sail (specially the case with a yarn tell-tale) and finally, I like placing them in panels 2(lower half), 4 and 5 (in the middle) if you're counting from the top of the sail.

I agree w Geoff's comments.  In addition, I have put a telltale at the trailing

edge of the 2 top battens.  I use the Davis nylon telltales, cut them about 8

inches long, and attach the round sticky pad at the end of the batten pocket.  I

have some extra, so find me next Tues night before racing and I'll give you a

couple and show you where I have placed mine.



I find this position to be particularly useful off the wind - I can get the vang

and mainsheet eased to the optimum point so that the airflow on the sail is

consistent vis a vis the windward and leeward sides.

I fear I understand the regression. Until last Tuesday, I was certain I was becoming worse with every race.

Now, I see a faint glimmer of hope that I won't be 29th in a 28-boat fleet.
