All:

A great night of racing last night on the Jordanelle. We had 8 boats
out for the last night which started off with a very strong 10-12
knots from the Southeast but as racing began, it shifted to our
standard Northwest at 3-5knots and eventually strengthened a little
to 5-7knots for the last couple of races. A nice thunderstorm, which
never threatened us, passed just to the North of us, offering a nice
bit of scenery as the races began.

Thanks to Honey Parker, Blaine's wife who helped out on the Race
Committee boat last night and to Doug Dubois also helped with the
race committee and who let me take his hot rod Laser out for a couple
of races and probably was biting his nails as I made some punk moves
on his boat after crossing the start line early. Congrats to Mike
Falk and Bob Skinner who came out in Bob's pair of newly acquired
boats to not only join the racing but made a big impression on their
first night out!

Results are posted in the files section of the Yahoo site.

We'll have the results of the I-sails, sail give-away to the top two
up and coming sailors, later today.

We have begun discussion of a one-day Fall regatta later in October,
after the truck of new boats has arrived so those people can race.
That racing will be followed by the race awards BBQ.

Congratulations to John Nuffer, Ben Nak and Brett Haacke for scoring
1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Spring Series! (Scoring corrected based on
Stan Haacke's careful eye)

Congratulations to John Nuffer, Philippe Astie and Pablo Gianfelice
for scoring 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Summer Series!

Congratulations to John Nuffer, Philippe Astie and Stan Haacke for
scoring 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Overall Series!

A few fun facts at the end of year one:
Number of members of the Park City Laser Sailing Assoc: 55
Number of boats in the Park City Laser Sailing Assoc: 36
Number of people who joined us for Tuesday night races: 27
Number of races run throughout the Spring series: 19
Number of races run throughout the Summer series: 33
Number of races run throughout the Overall series: 52
Tanks of gas used to run the whole season of racing: 1

Thank you to everybody who made this season what it was in its first
year. Thanks to John Nuffer for allowing the group to use his
aluminum boat and engine as our race committee boat, thanks to Pablo
who continually lent out his backup boat to new members to get them
racing, thanks to everybody who have been so generous with their time
and energy to help recruit new members and who are helping to build
this fleet.

I think we're all looking forward to what the racing will look like
next season! Don't forget that we begin our racing the first Tuesday
in June, put it on your Outlook Calendar!

Stay tuned for the October Fall Regatta details.

All:

I'm hoping that we can cap off a great first year of growth in our
group with the best turnout so far! Including the six boat order that
was placed with West Coast Sailing last week, we have 36 boats in our
fleet and 55 members. That's not including some new people who have
yet to give me their email addresses or buy boats, but are looking.
Bob and Sherrie are planning on joining us tomorrow night with their
boats, Jim McIntyre bought Pablo's '77 boat he had for sale. Let's see
everybody finish this season off right.

Forecast is for Sunny skies, 78deg (10 deg warmer than last week) and
winds in the 6-9 mph range. A perfect night to finish off the year.

The biggest night of racing so far is 11 boats.

Wow we had an unexpectedly large turnout today-- All told 8 boats on
the water! The Haacke familiy (all 3) made it to the water first
followed by Mike Hayes, Philippe, and Blaine. Just as they were in,
thunder clouds began to move in from the South East. We saw
lightening in the distance and everyone in the water thought it would
be wise to hit the beach and wait it out. About 45 minutes later the
skiies began to clear when Blaine and I returned to the water. The
breeze was good but shifty. We weren't out too long as we both had
some minor equipment failure. My lower traveler block broke cleanly
during a gybe so I basicly limped back to the ramp with my boom
acting like a bow sprit.

Bob and Sherri showed up with 2 blue Lasers new to the fleet. They
plan to make it out Tuesday Night. Bob was taking one for a maiden
voyage and was looking rather impressive.

Next weekend I will try to make it out both days but if I have to
choose, I will go with Sunday as that seems to be the most convenient
day for the group. As we get closer to the weekend, please post if
you will be making it out. We can put some organized sailing
together if everyone is interested. If I know others will be out I
will plan to be rigged by 2:00.

Have a great Tuesday Night of racing! We should have another several
good weekends of sailing before the frost bite regatta!

Hope to see you on the water.

It sounds like 3 of us will be out on Sunday (Blaine, Philippe, and Scott) and
at this point just me on Saturday. Hopefully, a few others will be able to make
it out as well. See you on the water.

I'd talk to John Nuffer. He was interested in finding one for his daughter so that she will be able to race next Summer.  I'm not sure if Nell has a radial or just the full and if she's interested in buying too.  Two other new Lasers were ordered yesterday as Radial rigs.  We'll have quite the crew out there in Radials next year.  We'll have to run the Radials in the same race but allow for a separate score for the top Radial sailors.

I did not know there was interest in a Radial Rig. I have a radial
rig and sail that I would sell if anyone is interested. Brett, my
son, used it until he grew enough to handle the full rig. They're
both in great shape.

Attached is the link to the future Racing Rules for 2009 to 2012. It's
in the "Links" section of our group's site or you can use this link to
to get there:

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/parkcitylaser/links/

There is a clean version of the new rules and marked up version which
allows you to see what was changed from the 05 to 08 version. At first
glance nothing overwhelmingly controversial jumped out at me but more
time is needed to digest the changes.

Enjoy,

I'll give it a crack this weekend. Not sure which day yet. (And need to

PS Who is sailing this weekend. I'm aiming for 2:00 both days

weather permitting. I missed last Saturday (T-storms) and was late

on Sunday. I hope to do better this time around.

That's great news!  And I think you're right about the radial fleet.  Linda Stout and Susan Odell are both buying new radials in the fleet purchase so with your friends, that's five and John Nuffer said his daughter is likely to be joining the group with a radial next season for six!

Last night saw four more new to the group racers hit the water; Ken

Block, Doug Dubois, Blaine Parker and Jim McIntyre. Doug, a longtime

Laser sailor who used to run the former Park City Laser racing, put

on a bit of a clinic on Laser sailing last night, taking three

bullets on his way to winning the night. Other good results were put

in by Ken and Blaine in their first nights racing, as well as weekly

favorite John Nuffer who with the absence of Philippe, while he's in

France, took the lead in the Summer series.

Big congratulations go out to Pablo who with his consitent finishes

and dedication to showing up to race, has moved into third place in

the Summer series standings!

Last night was yet another great night for racing, with a light 3-5

knots coming out of the west/northwest. We rolled off four more

races for a total of 29 races in the Summer series alone. One more

night left, next week, the 30th of September!

We also saw four new members show up to introduce themselves last

night, including David and Susan Odell who bought boats in the fleet

purchase and are looking forward to next year, as we all are at this

point with the numbers being so strong. At the end of our first year

and after the fleet purchase boats come in, we will have about 40

boats and nearly 60 members in the group! Congratulations to

everybody for spreading the word to friends and strangers alike.

I was about to email you but you beat me to it!  The deadline is tomorrow and I've been contacting people one by one to either get a CC# over the phone or get a check from them.  I will Fed Ex any checks in together to George at West Coast Sailing.

Can you let me know what your preferred method of payment is and what your home/billing address is for George's records?

All:

John Nuffer and I compared notes on what each of us has spent this
year to get the group off the ground and running. John is going to
pay the insurance bill today, that's $958, and he has $178 in
additional expenses. I paid $400 in R/C supplies (marks, anchors,
line, first aid kit...etc), $100 in wood and bolts to make the Laser
racks and about $100 for office supplies, the scoring program and
other accessories. I do have receipts for this and they will be kept
on file. The total for the two of us is $1,736. As mentioned
before, we're dedicated to making the racing available at a nominal
charge to free for everybody in the future. However, we don't have
sponsors this year except for Philippe and his I-sails company. With
that in mind, we'd like to ask each and every one of you to chip in
what you believe you think the racing was worth to you and for what
you got out of it. We won't set an amount at all, if you raced one
night and feel that it was worth $10, that is great, every bit
helps. If you raced a lot and you feel you can afford more, please
send a higher amount. Once we have achieved the money necessary to
pay back John and myself, the rest will go into a new bank account
that John is setting up that will be available for all to view the
statement of, if desired. We'll use any money past the $1,736 to pay
for the trophies that Ken Block said he would sell the group at his
cost. John and I both will also reduce that $1,736 by our own
individual contributions.

I hope that this seems like a fair solution, thank you Ken for the
idea.

Please email with any questions regarding this solution to myself

Geoff,

What’s the status on the new boat order?  New deadline or what’s the situation?  Thanks

I hope that this seems like a fair solution, thank you Ken for the
idea.

Please email with any questions regarding this solution to myself
directly or to the group if desired.

I have to admit, I love skiing but I'm already looking forward to next season with all of the new members and all of the boats that are going to be part of this group.  The racing is going to be much deeper in terms of numbers and skill sets and I know that everybody will not only have a good time racing but will improve their skills in the process.

I gotta say, last night was good fun. The competition was gentlemanly
(where are you, ladies?), nobody tried to stuff anyone at the mark or
barge the committee boat despite the opportunities. And everyone was
good enough not to laugh and point despite it being my first time in a
Laser since...well, heck. I don't want to say how long. Let it suffice
to say I didn't yet have a driver's license.

Too bad September's almost over...

Cheers,

Blaine

All,
We have a section dedicated in the group's site to help locate
used boats. When you are in the PCLR yahoo group just click
on "database." You will find a table with the links Geoff mentioned
and some individual listings for boats. I encourage everyone to
update the database when they learn of a boat that has become
available or if a listed boat has sold. This will help the whole
fleet grow. When I see messages for boats, I try to them to the
database, too.

I have also attached the link directly to the database as well.

Let me know if you have any feedback or if I can help in any way.

Thanks,

Jack's da man. I've never met a guy with such a love for heavy
equipment. Some people sail for fun. He drives his Kubota tractor and
moves stuff.

Posting. Well...it's a way to generally communicate with the rest of
the Park City Laser fanatics, all of whom are reading (or deleting)
this right now.

Boats for sale? Some, it appears. Also keep searching KSL.com, Craig's
List and the Laser forums. I found my boat through Geoff, who sent me a
listing he spotted in the Boulder Craig's List. I drove out there and
back to pick up a 25-year old beater the color of an eggplant. We'll be
trying it tonight.

Too bad we won't see you tonight. Next time.

All:
The Jordanelle State Park and the Friends of Jordanelle would like to
gather with the Park City Laser Group to celebrate the end of the
first season of the Laser race series and to bring all of us who
enjoy the Jordanelle Reservoir, closer together as a group. Please
read the letter below, from the Jordanelle Park Manager, and consider
joining them on October 7th. This invitation went out to the Friends
of Jordanell, boaters who keep slips at the marina and of course to
the Park City Laser Group. This will not replace our awards night
which will either be hosted some weekend at Ken Block's house or at
the Jordanelle State Park facility, date and time to be determined.

Dear Friend of Jordanelle,

First off, I want to introduce myself. My name is Mike Johnson and I
am the new manager here at Jordanelle State Park . I have now been
here 7 months and survived a summer. In hiring me, the state parks
and recreation division made a change. I have never been employed by
the state and am not a park ranger. Therefore, I am not a law
enforcement officer which frees me up to manage the park better.

I come from a background of 25 years active duty in the US Navy where
I dealt with finance, logistics, and contracts as a Supply Officer.
I then ran my own business as a financial advisor for a dozen years
and then spent two years as a ski instructor at The Canyons. I am an
avid outdoorsman, and I do a lot of trail running so I love trails.

I was specifically hired to help in better utilization of Jordanelle
State Park as a resource for the people of Utah and to run it in a
way that produces revenue so it would be able to carry it's own
weight. There is also major development in process around the
perimeter of the park and I am to cooperate with those developers
within the guidelines of the park master plan to help them with their
access to the park and how we can enlist their help in park
improvements.

The reason for this letter to you is to invite you to consider
joining our "Friends of Jordanelle" (FOJ) group. The Friends of
Jordanelle group is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization but it has not
functioned much in the past. The President, Tom Minahan, and I would
like to change that.

The Friends group will consist of boaters of all types, fishermen,
campers, nature and trail users, and any other interested persons.
The group will be involved with the park on a higher level than the
user public and will be "in the know" of plans and events at the park
and in fact we want the group to give us input on those plans and
events. We will have occasional special functions for the group as a
whole and also, as individual groups by areas of interest. Those
gatherings will be arranged by the FOJ and the park staff. They will
range from family outings, work parties, fundraisers, events, and
whatever else we come up with.

So, Friend, here is your chance to get be more involved and have a
say in your park and to contribute to making this a better place for
all. Attached with this invite is the announcement for you to RSVP.
This first gathering will be the conclusion of the season for our
newly formed Tuesday evening sailing club sponsored by the FOJ. We
will have dinner, then a presentation by myself as park manager as to
what is going on new and what we are planning in the near future.
Then Tom, the president will share some thoughts and we will plan for
the next meeting and see who wants to get involved in the leadership
of the FOJ. Please come and join us on 7 October here at the Event
Center at 6 PM. Call 435-649-9540 and let us know how many are
coming. Thanks for your support and we'll see you here.

Sincerely,

Mike Johnson

Manager, Jordanelle State Park

We'll be fine. John hasn't even paid that bill yet. It's due later this week.
I've tallied up my expenses and I think we'll take a lighter approach to raising
funds.

Let me work on the "dues" portion for the group and I will get back to
everybody. A number of us discussed this topic last Tuesday before
sailing but the number wasn't quite sorted out yet as we still have to
add in Race Committee supplies, the Laser rack cost and a few other
odds and ends. Long story short, we have a couple of options whether
we roll these expenses forward into '09 or if we ask for dues/donations
towards reimbursement now.

Hey, Steve--

Ranch Exit. Good stuff. My next door neighbor up here in Tollgate
Canyon (I-80 Ranch Exit 150) builds the Dew Tour. I also have a
neighbor who apparently edits a lot of cycling and BMX video.
(Impatient Cow?)

Anyway, off topic.

Someone post an amount and mailing address. My check writing hand is
itchy.

Cheers,

Blaine

The weather forecast is really good for tomorrow night. Expect that
four races will get underway around 6:15-6:30pm tomorrow night. Even
though the sun disappears behind Deer Valley, we were able to see the
race course for four races last week and I expect no difference
tomorrow night.

Pablo and Dusty are still in the lead for the I-sails prizes of new
sails to the best two up and coming sailors. Hopefully for their sake
they both show up and sail well, otherwise somebody might find
themselves at the top of that list. Philippe won't be joining us
tomorrow night so that he can sell his sails in France to pay for his
generous donation to the program.

I got an email from the Park over the weekend, reminding me of the fact that we are welcome to use their facility for our awards party, which could be held on a weekend with a bbq and sailing to go along with it.  All of this is free of charge according to them.  Their facility includes two bbq grills (we also have Mike Hayes' donor grill in our fenced in area) and their classroom among other parts.

I think both sets of Phillippe's twins should each have their own boat in time for the holidays:)  I have a radial and 4.7 rig that I'm happy to lend for any of the kids across our growing fleet to use.   I don't want to sell either of them as they are nice to have around but would like them to get some use.
I would also love to to do a frostbite.  As I travel during the week for work I have not been able to participate in the Tuesday night series but would love to sail with you en mass.  This would be a great way to close out the season.  Maybe we could get the grill going again and if there is any volunteer type stuff that is needed for the Parks for use of the storage area, we might be able to work that in as well.  Strength in numbers!

Food for thought,
Scott

Don't hold back, Philippe!  Everybody needs a quiver of boats.  Heck, you can put two sons on the "old" boat and race the new one.

Doug, it was fun sailing with you yesterday and look forward to more days in the future.  Sorry for the mis-spelling.   Have fun on Tuesday.  Scott

So my wife brought home a flyer last weekend for your new Laser
fleet, and after a review of the messages since last spring I
decided to get my Laser off the ceiling of my garage, clear off the
2 years of dust since racing in the Olympic Classes regatta at
Alamitos in 2006, and go for a sail on Sunday. I'll be out Tuesday
night, but thought I would introduce myself in advance. I live just
around the corner from Jordanelle in Pinebrook.
In 1991 I did exactly what this group is doing now, that is build a
Utah Laser fleet from scratch. I became a Sunfish Laser Inc dealer,
brought a few new boats into the state, ran an ad in the Wasatch
Sports Guide (no web back then), and started running races on Deer
Creek. Within a couple years we had 20 boats in the fleet, formed
the Park City Yacht Club (non-profit paper club), owned a small
powerboat for RC, and were hosting good sized regattas such as the
D23 champs. We were also the originator of the No Coast Champs
proposing the idea to the NA Laser Class and hosting the first one
on Deer Creek in 1996. We even had one of our members as an elected
official to the NA Laser Class and another sailor on an Olympic
campaign finishing consistently in the top 10 at major regattas, but
always coming up a few boats short at the Olympic Trials. A few of
us were hard core racers travelling together to many major Laser
regattas across the country including New England, Florida, Calif
and numerous smaller regattas in between. Since 2000 my sailing has
shifted to a national U20 campaign with other Laser sailors, owning
and racing extensively a Melges24 and Olson 30, racing the Olson 30
in the 2002 Pacific Cup to Hawaii, regular crew on a 50' in SF bay
doing various coastal races, and the last few years regular crew on
a Bene 36.7 in So Cal racing OD and coastal races. I have to admit
though that lately it's been bugging me to get back to racing my
Laser on somewhat of a regular basis, in particular Laser Masters
regattas, so your new fleet is perfect timing for me.
So what happened to our fleet you might ask, and how do you avoid it
happening to your new fleet? For one thing, by coincidence all of
the major supporters of the club, except for myself, moved out of
the state at about the same time. Another problem was that what I
term the 80-20 rule was beginning to wear on the principals of the
club. That's where 20% of the club members do all the work
organizing events. Another factor, and we really worked to solve
this without any luck, was getting younger sailors involved to
backfill the older sailors that lose interest, relocate, etc. Of
course the viral spread of uneducated PWCs at the time didn't help
matters.
I have been keeping the corporate non-profit state registration
current for the Park City Yacht Club, so if you want to take it over
for your fleet it's yours. I noticed you are at the point of dealing
with the substantial cost associated with running seemingly simple
regattas. We handled this by registering PCYC with US Sailing and
purchasing their group regatta insurance. We charged membership dues
that were catagorized as equity and non-equity. An equity member
paid a one time, non-refundable equity due of around $100 that gave
them voting rights in the club. These equity dues were used to cover
the startup expenses (marks, RC boat, etc). Everyone, equity or non-
equity paid annual dues to cover recurring expenses such as
insurance, boat fuel, etc. We also charged members an additional
racing fee if they wanted to participate in racing. Even though
everyone was in it for the racing, having separate dues for club
membership and racing gave some the option to join the Park City
Yacht Club for the novelty of it even if they didn't plan to race,
and ultimately providing additional funding to the club. We even
printed plastic membership cards to show off to their out of state
sailing friends.
Anyway, your group seems to be off to a good start and hopefully it
will grow and sustain. I offered up my experiences only to give you
ideas of how to keep your group growing. I like the on site storage
(hope it's OK that Scott let me in to keep my boat there until
tomorrow since I'm car-topping) . The only pitfall of your PWC ramp
location is sailing into or out of that shoreline when there is a
fairly good breeze blowing out of the south, as on Sunday. For
beginner Laser sailors that could be a real problem. At Deer Creek
we used to toss out a couple small anchors in chest deep water with
milk jugs as buoys that could be used to tie up to while taking a
break or retrieving your dolly. Maybe that would work here?
So I'll see some of you tomorrow night.

Doug DuBois
(Scott, good job on the spelling! You were there except for the
capital B in DuBois)
