Looks like everything I just wrote just dissappeared so I'll try and
start over.
I have made contact with several groups and us being covered or
sharing coverage is not out of the question. We do, however, need to
expedite our organization. I have spoken with several groups regarding
the insurance issues, and there is the possibility of working with
them. We do need to file our 501-C3 and appoint a director and officers
(I'll have more info tomorrow). I am a member of BLYC and Jeff is an
Officer there so he may be able to provide some assistance there. They
are a wonderful group that promote all things to do with sailing. I
have spoken with my wife and my house is fine for a meeting this
weekend. Sunday may be best. The ILCA has given me a
the name of the insurance provider they prefer, so I will be
contacting them tommorrow. I am hoping we will have some interest in
poeple wanting to take officer positions in our fleet so we can share
the workload while we get this going as well as providing a strong
base for the future.
  Please respond

A meeting at your house would be great.

I will try to get in touch with Tom Minahan to find
out more about the Friends of the Jordanelle, if they
carry an insurance policy and if we can link ourselves
to them to speed up the process. Can you find out how
much liability coverage we need? I assume that the
"Friends" has some liability coverage since they teach
sailing out on the Jordanelle.

I can meet either Saturday afternoon or anytime on Sunday.  I wonder if there is a way to get recognized under an existing area yacht club charter as a way to streamline the process for this year?  Just a thought...

I am planning to make it again this year. I just saw an announcement from the utahsailing group.   It would be great to have a large Laser turn out!  Of the 3 Lasers that showed up last year only two of us made on to the race course.  It was blowing like stink that day.  It was a good event with good food. Last year was just a one day event and this year it looks like they are expanding it to two.

This would also be a good event for any out-of-towners to show up for.  Deer Creek with Mt Timp in the background is pretty special.

Saw this listing on Craigslist for a 1978 Laser for
$750. If somebody needs a boat this is a great grab
for a series boat. It does come with a full rig and
sail as well as the "M" rig sail they list.

As for the regatta, it would be great to promote
something that already exists, like the Utah Summer
games in early June. If we could get a number of
Lasers there and promote it to the Colorado group and
District 23 in general, it could turn out to be a
great one-design start for the Lasers.

I agree that we should get together and decide on some
basic foundation points for this racing group. When
and where do you propose we meet? Anybody who is
interested should plan to be there. I am free most of
these weeknights.

I did stop by the Jordanelle office this afternoon but
nobody was in the office. I will try to find somebody
tomorrow.

My bet is that the water temp won't be over 50 until June. I've surfed
in 52 degree water with a 5/4 mm wetsuit and found that was still
pretty chilly (ice cream headache!). (The way I sail I spend about the
same amount of time in the water as when I use to surf.)

A spotter of some sort would alleviate a lot of concerns. Otherwise,
if the air temp was not much warmer, I would be inclined to use a dry
suit. I've seen where some frostbite groups adopt a 100 degree rule
where you add the air temp and water temp and it has to be over a 100
or they don't go out. Certainly the wind strength would be a major
consideration in these types of conditions.

With the right provisions, I would be willing to give it a shot during
the weekends leading up to Memorial Day, schedules permitting.

Maybe we can organize some training days here shortly,
on the weekends, until the series starts. Totally
informal but we can work on having a crash boat and
people can work together to improve their skills,
including possibly some video work.

We don't have any plans to start before Memorial Day
weekend, any sooner would be too cold I believe.
Tentatively we'll say that the first Tuesday of racing
is going to be May 27th.

Right now we're looking at racing from May 27th until
September 16th. For now we'll base the season trophy
on the compilation of the entire season of racing. In
the future we'll probably run a Spring and Summer
series. We usually will plan to run 4-6 short races
each Tuesday night consisting of a more tactical
course, a windward/leeward/windward with the
start/finish in the middle.

I'm headed down to the Jordanelle this afternoon
hopefully to check in with the management down there
to see if there's any questions.

I'm not sure, But I am gonna dig out my wetsuits. I also need a new
pair of boots before I get out there. I know that cold water is
dangerous but I know kayakers that are out there already and they
are practically submerged.

I think we need to avoid Intensity sails altogether.
It's for a couple of reasons, first of all we need to
promote one-design racing and those sails are not
class legal. Many arguments will come out for and
against those sails if we allow them. Also, we need
to keep supporting the companies that support Laser
sailing and Intensity is not one of them. We don't
need fresh, crispy sails to be fast. I think you'll
find it's the pilot on the boat that almost always has
a bigger influence on the result rather than the
sails. This shouldn't be an "arms race".

I would imagine that as interest grows there would be benefit for both the local and internet based companies.  In addition to West Coast Sailing, Intensity Sails offers a great sail replacement option, particularly for the older boats and potential rental boats.  Granted they are not "technically legal" for official class events, in my opinion, they are a worthwhile purchase for anyone on a budget who still wants great and lasting performance.  (I'll stop here as this starting to sound like one of those Male Enhancement commercials-egads!)

That's great news! Other than John Nuffer having some
initial discussions with him regarding R/C gear, we
did not have any experience with him re:purchases. He
also has a few used boats including 2005 and 2006
years so I imagine we'll be talking to him regarding
possible boat purchases when the time comes. We will
also be supporting the local dealer but we'll see how
much the Jordanelle wants to invest in the Laser.

Geoff et al,
After a few emails, I just got off the phone with George from West
Coast Sailing. We're working out delivery of a Kitty Hawk trailer and
Radial Mast section. I told him I was getting involved with PC Laser
group, and like he had mentioned to you, he reiterated he would help in
anyway he could. He might even try to make a trip out here later this
summer with some schwagg!!
I just wanted to pass along for the benefit of the group that he
is a great resource with some of the best prices I have seen.

Geoff, I have posted in both the BLYC and GSLYC forums and I have
spoken to some folks at the GSL marina. Sounds like there are quite
a few laser sailors in the area. Let me know what you would like
help with.

It will definitely be a weeknight, that's for sure.
I'm all up for taking a poll later on when we have
word from the Jordanelle about doing this and when we
have enough voices to have a poll.

Geoff,
I would imagine it would come down to a majority rules for a M, Tu,
Thursday night--whatever gets the most people on the water and racing.
Weekends would be difficult laser racing with all the PWC and ski
boats.

Scott

Thanks, I felt it was worthwhile to quickly build a
site where anybody can go for information so we don't
lose people.

It is a little icy out there but with the warm weather
forecasted, starting Saturday, we should see a lot of
this snow really melt. It will be interesting to see
what happens around here after a couple of days in PC
in the sixties.

As for the day, I'm open to any day but it won't be
Wednesday, so we don't conflict with the racing on the
GSL for anybody who wants to do both. My feeling is
that we could look at Monday, Tuesday or Thursday as
nobody would want to do a Friday series and wreck
their weekends.

Geoff,
Nice job getting the group set up and great video in the files
folder! I'm looking forward to a great laser summer (though, currently
I'm wishing I had and ice boat after looking at Jordanelle recently.)
For now, I guess watching the Rooster videos and waiting for the snow
to melt is the best I can do.
I know you are thinking about a Tuesday night race series which
will be fantastic. With my current schedule (alway subject to change)
I likely won't be able to make many of these but would like to do some
work-ups on Monday evenings for anyone interested.
I'll stay tuned for any updates and will help out where possible.

Thanks for joining us at Park City Laser Racing. Spring is coming and we're
looking forward
to gathering a bunch of dedicated sailors on the waters of the Jordanelle
Reservoir for some
good Laser racing this Summer.
