There really isn't too much of a wrong way to place tell-tales as everybody has a location that they like, but here's what I like and where I place tell tales.
Always place the tell-tales about 1 to 1.5 feet aft from the luff so that they are far enough away from the mast to be effective. Also, make sure to place them so that the nylon or strong is coming out the aft end of the sticker that holds it to the sail so that the tell-tale flows better. Place each tell-tale in the middle of a panel of the sail so that it doesn't stick to the seams of a sail (specially the case with a yarn tell-tale) and finally, I like placing them in panels 2(lower half), 4 and 5 (in the middle) if you're counting from the top of the sail.
