At the run tonight there was some talk about Kezar Stadium. There seemed to be a strong sense that everyone should write a letter, that we need to fill the mail boxes at city hall. Heather encouraged me to share the letter that I sent. So if you're having writer's block, please see the letters Andy and I just added to the a Save Kezar folder in the files area of our Yahoo Groups website. My letter has a list of physical and email addresses at the end. These include the Mayor, all the supervisors, and Recreation and Parks. We each sent hard copies to the Mayor, our district supervisor David Campos (yours may be a different person) and the Recreaton and Park Commission. Electronic copies went to everyone.
Thanks to everyone who has already sent a letter. If you've not yet sent yours, do please take a moment to put few words to paper and send it to our elected officials!
to get you started on your letters and/or emails... the first 3 Supervisors
listed are the ones who attended the meeting but I'm also including contact info

There was quite an impressive crowd today at the Budget Meeting despite the last
minute change in schedule. So here's the deal, the plan is to:
1) Generate $4.8 million in Revenue (by increasing parking fees all around
including at Kezar, increasing fees for public pools, charging entrance fee to
botanical gardens, increasing fees for after school programs and the list goes
on). There was also talk of leasing facilities to highest bidder which means
winner can charge whatever they wanted for use of facilities such as Kezar.
2) Plan also includes $1.7 million in Administrative & Management Reductions
(72-74 program directors, including Melvina Hill who takes care of us at Kezar,
received notices on 2/27 to be effective 5/1). These are the loyal, trusted,
recreational professionals who have worked with generations of SF families – no
joke – I'm talking 10, 15, 20+ yrs these directors have been around. If anyone
knows the community, it's the Program Directors. There was talk of replacing
these directors with outside organizations – how that would help as opposed to
someone who has the respect of the community, I do not know.
3) Lastly, $4.8 million in Operations Reductions (reduced facility hours. No
word on Kezar's hours but they would be reduced – it would mostly affect kids
who used the facility in the morning or early afternoon as well as it would mean
an end to the Special Olympics practice & training which is the program that
Melvina's husband is involved with). Many parents with latchkey kids rely on
after school programs for their kids – reduction of facility hours means the
kids will have no place to go after school. Same goes for programs which keep
older kids out of trouble/out of gangs.
Write to our supervisors NOW! Help save the jobs of numerous program
directors/staff. Say NO to privatization and unregulated spending without
accountability and YES to the oldest Community based Organization in this city –
Recreation & Park! Your support means everything!
** There was talk among the meeting attendees of a march to City Hall on
Thursday, 3/26 – I will post details as I receive them.
Thank you!
I will be at the Pamakid bench in Golden Gate Park, in front of the Academy of Sciences at 5:30 PM. If anyone needs to contact us, my cell phone number is 650-296-8641.

I just came from City Hall. They have moved the Recreation & Park
budget discussion on the agenda to 1:30pm. There were a fair number of people
in the room who appeared to be there for this topic, too. You can't help but
feel like they want to make it difficult for the public to voice their
concerns. I can't make it anymore because I'll be on a bus to a track
meet. Ilona (thanks Ilona!) is sitting in Room 250 with Melvina Hill right now
and she said she can stay.
If this time change to 1:30 allows anyone to
now make it, please go. The more people we have there showing an interest and
concern for Kezar's future, the better.
A late reminder that Wed Mar 11 is the Recreation and Parks Department Budget
Committee Hearing. There should be discussion about the Kezar track. If you
can, please attend and 1) find out what's going on and 2) voice your opinion
aboout making sure Kezar remains open to the public.

Now that daylight savings has begun, I thought I'd plug Tuesday Runs.
A small group of K-Stars/Pamakids gathers most Tuesdays at Fell & Cole on the Panhandle at 6:30 p.m.
We usually run between 5 and 9 miles at anywhere between 7:00 - 8:30 pace depending on the run and participants.
It's mostly a social run, but since many folks are training for races we occasionally throw in hill repeat workouts, hill-intensive runs, trips through Presidio etc.
A typical route however is Fell/Cole to Chain of Lakes via JFK trails and back on MLK trails or road. We also do beach and back, and different trail combos in the park. Route is discussed in advance and decided on by the assembled group.
If you need more information, email me at tomasp AT sbcglobal DOT net (replace the capitalized words with symbols).
Meeting time: 6:30
Run Starts: 6:35
Distance: 5 - 9 miles
Running time: 45 min - 1:15 min
Pace: depends, but mostly 7 - 8:30 pace
Past and current participants: Denis, Zack, Marlyss, Andy Chan, Tomas, John Spriggs, Leah, Nathan, Jeff, Anders, Sara, and many more.
Hi Dale -- I can't run the race this weekend, but I just updated my PA membership.
For all who are registering as masters for the first time (Megan and a few others), you actually have to MAIL them proof of your DOB. See Dale's link below to update your membership. It doesn't matter for me since I'm not running this weekend, but it might matter for others.
Thanks!

Hi all -- I was just looking at our roster on line and noticed many names missing. Unless you paid for multiple years, your membership lapsed at the end of 2008. I just uploaded the photos taken with my camera at the Lake Merritt Joggers and Strides Couple's Relay. Sorry for the delay, I'd been trying to add them to pamakids.org, but technical difficulties are going to slow down a transition to that photo album. Here is the link:
Wanted to express my thanks for the Burrito Dinner and the General Meeting last night. Thank yous to Andy for getting the room at Sacred Heart High School for the meeting, to Phyllis and the committee for the food and drinks. Also, congratulations to the new Board Members as well as those who served in 2007 and previous...especially George who has put a lot of time in for the club and for us.
More important, it was nice to be there to be a part of the evening.
On another note, my apologies if I wasn't as talkative as I would normally be last night. As some of you may know, the New Balance - San Francisco store where I work may be closing by the end of April. Our staff was informed of this during the week. This announcement came just a few days after another New Balance store in San Jose shut its doors after 6 1/2 years. Both stores are independently owned by Metrosport Inc which has four other stores (San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Altos and Folsom). The Metrosport stores are affected big time by this as well. Right now, you could say I'm job hunting.
Definitely, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys at Across The Bay 12K in the Pamakid green. Take care everyone and have a good weekend!
As you know, next Wednesday will be our first Pamakids group run from from the bench with our name on it in Golden Gate Park. We've got a nice group of folks coming out already; please e-mail me at rsvp@... if you can make it.
The run starts/finishes at our bench. Honestly, this will be the first time I've seen the bench, but those who have been there tell me it's across from the Academy of Sciences main entrance. I'm putting my trust in Phyllis, who knows where it is and offered to hang some balloons so that directionally challenged people like me won't miss it.
Meeting time is 6pm, Wednesday March 11. For those interested in running approx 6 miles, I put together a map. The distance isn't exact since I'm guessing on where the bench would
be:
(I'm sorry about the annoying ads, I didn't put them there)
We're not married to this route; we can adjust depending on what the group wants to do. I will be doing something slightly shorter, like around 4, most likely using the trails up/down JFK. So anyone interested in running shorter is welcome to join me.
I posted the flyer with all of the details in the "files" section on the racing team page.
Dinner at Pacific Catch (9th and Lincoln) post-run.
PS...Wear your Pamakids singlet for a photo op! (at the run...not the dinner!)
Only a few of the people from the racing team that volunteered on the Half Marathon have indicated that they will be attending the Volunteer Thank You Dinner. The deadline to RSVP was February 26th.
These are the people that contacted me to attend the dinner:
Andy Chan
Malinda Walker Chan
Zack Hedling
Megan, Merick and Robert Nguyen

The schedule often gets revised as games get cancelled because of
rain and then re-scheduled, etc. Melvina Hill sends out the schedule
via e-mail whenever she makes a revision. You can contact me and
I'll give you her e-mail address if you want to request to be on her
distribution list (of course, unless things change there will no
longer be a Melvina distribution list after May 1).
This is one of the services Melvina provides as a director and
because she has established relationships with the people that use
Kezar. I have such a strong relationship with her because of
Thursday night track workouts, SHCP cross country and track & field
practices, and the fact that I coached her son, that I often get
phone calls on my cell phone when there are last minute revisions --
ever notice that we seem more aware that the track is going to be
closed on Thur night while other groups seem shocked when they
arrive? (All this is great info for a letter showing your
displeasure that she has been laid off).
The photo on this blog that Adrian sent out is of the schedule under
the glass on the display case by Kezar's entrance. It is the most
visible (only) schedule for the public to see BUT IT IS NOT the most
up to date schedule. For that, you need to be on Melvina's
distribution list.

Hi Y'all,
I'd like to encourage everyone to run the 10k option because it's being
scored as as team competition The top 5 runners from each team score,
lowest score wins. In addition we get a 5 sec. time deduction for every
club runner after the first five, so just showing up and running the 10k
can help out the team.
Sorry Anders, I forgot to mention this detail when you kindly
volunteered to captain the race!
Best,
John

I'm leading the team for the Presidio 10M/10K on March 29, 2009. Please register for the Pamakids racing team at http://tinyurl.com/crx7rp by March 14.
This is a great race that runs through the Presidio and out and back across the Golden Gate Bridge! The Presidio 10 is also the host race for the 51st Annual RRCA Convention (http://www.rrcaconvention.org/) that will be held in San Francisco the preceding few days. As you've probably heard from George Rehmet, the Pamakids is one of the four host running clubs putting on the convention, so it is important for us to have a sea of Pamakids green at this race!

There's been a lot of talk about Kezar Stadium in the last few days.
I really haven't been able to confirm that there are definite plans
to close Kezar on May 1 and that Kezar will be sold off privately.
This is stated on the www.SaveKezar.com website and repeated
elsewhere (including message boards and the Save Kezar Facebook page).
I just spoke to Melvina Hill on the phone and have read some of the
posts on the message boards, what I think is important for us, as
users of Kezar, is to be aware that major changes could be coming.
For example, they could start charging people to run/workout at Kezar
and/or hours may be reduced as they look to raise money by renting
out the facility to private groups. Melvina wants us to know that
this and other changes are possible and that most of the changes
would probably negatively impact the public's use of Kezar. That why
it's important that we make our voices heard and be a presence at
meetings to show support.
What is confirmed is that Melvina and many other Recreation and Park
employees were given pink slips on February 27, 2009 – to be laid off
effective May 1, 2009. Melvina has been a dear supporter of the
people who use Kezar. You may not always like the message she
delivers to you, but you know she does it in the best interest of all
of us. Out of support for Melvina, Malinda and I plan to attend the
Town Hall Meeting:

First Unitarian Universalist Society Church
1187 Franklin at Geary Street
http://savepublichealth.wordpress.com/2009/02/22/community-budget-

However, the more important meeting for the Recreation and Park Dept
is the Recreation and Parks Budget Hearing Committee Meeting on
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 11am at City Hall. Melvina said if you
can only go to one, please go on March 11.

We recently received some upsetting news. Amidst the budget cuts going on
in San Francisco Kezar Stadium (which falls under the Parks/Rec dept) will
officially close to the public on May 1st and be sold off privately.
Given the importance of this public track to many athletes in the bay area
(particularly to us as we train there every week for our track
workouts) we
wanted to pass this information on to you all. Please find a link attached
with information about what we can do to prevent this happening. If you
feel as strongly as some of us do please go to the town hall meeting on
Monday at the below address to support keeping Kezar open.
The GGTC board of directors meeting falls on the same date at the same
time
of this meeting. We are needing a helping hand in having people represent
GGTC and make your voice heard.
