Hello everyone

Online entries are now open for the Australian 20km Roadwalk Championships
to be held in Hobart on the evening of Saturday 19th February - see
http://www.clubsonline.com.au/meets/index.cfm?
fuseaction=display_full&MeetID=608&OrgID=887.

Note that this carnival also includes Under 20 10km non-championship events
for which entry is also to be done via the online panels.

I have emailed AA to ask them to add the timetable and event cutoff times
to the panel so that all information is visible up front. I have also asked
them re the status of the event as an Oceania Area championship as that had
been advertised previously in AA communications b ut does not seem to be
mentioned on the entry panel.

Note that entries close on 1st February so you have 3+ weeks to sort out
entries.

Kind regards

Tim

Hi Tim, Thanks for the info, just a note to let you know that the dropping of walks from the W.A. state athletics calander was confirmed at their meeting on mon. night. We will only have up to 3 , 5km races  during the summer the rest 3km or 1500mts, the older athletes had the 10km state champs on wed. night, no athletics W.A. members turned up and they neglected to tell the younger athletes that  they had dropped the under 20, 10km from the program so some of them  did the open as no officals were there to tell them they wern't reg.
My squad of 42 is now 28 and by the end of march when our summer season is over it will probably be under 10 as the parents will not allow their children to race when not sanctioned by W.a. athletics as they have been verbally abused by other athletes and there parents in the past and so have the judges.. I guess i'll have to find a job to fill in the days now.. Philip Hollaway

G’day Tim,

I understand that Sean wont be racing , so the fields will be down by 1 in both the 20klm and the 10klm race . At least in one event as he cant race both ( entered in both ) at the same time if he is racing  . Please let me know if I am wrong .. It was mentioned to me by two athletes from the camp so it may be wrong ..

Dave

I have been asked by some of the organisers to let any racewalkers I know about
this event. Please assist me in getting this information into the racewalking
newletters, email lists, forums and other forms of communication. I will
endeavour to circulate it on all that I know of.

There is a new event in Western Australia at the moment in its 2nd year in 2011.
Its the 12 hour track ultra race starting at 8am on March 6th 2011. Its at the
Ern Clark Athletic centre, Wharf St Cannington, also known as Coker Park, and
the home of Canning Districts Athletics Club, and Southern Districts LAC.
There are also 6 hour (2pm start) and 3 hour (5pm start) options.

While it has begun as a runners event, there is no reason that I know of why
racewalkers couldnt compete as well.
Racewalking judges will not be supplied at this stage, so at this point its an
unjudged event. If people want to supply judges (perhaps for a racewalker
wanting to claim records), they would need to organise this with the race
director Nathan Fawkes ASAP.
Racewalkers may be interested in attempting state or national ultra records this
year or another year or simply using it as a
3 hour training walk in the evening from 5pm.

I enjoyed exploring the 6 hour event last year as a runner and I am signed up to
run the 3 hour event this year, although this year I am focused on trying to
finish the 6 foot 45km trails race run in NSW on March 12th, if I can get on the
start list.

Masters WA will recognise any State age-group records that are broken during the
event, including ultra distance events.
They have a number of records on the website that were set
in the 80's & 90's - most are achievable and could easily be broken.
Of course runners or racewalkers would need to be members of Masters WA to
qualify.
IAU Bronze labelling should be secured for the race, meaning that athletes will
be included in world rankings.

I remember when I was racewalking names such as George Audley and others doing
some 24 hour walking,
and of course Stan Jones was one of the first 24 hour centurions.
Not sure if there are many ultra racewalkers around these days, but I am
guessing Lyn Ventris, Gary Hastie, David Smyth, perhaps others might be
interested in the 3 hour event.

So please spread the word, and encourage any racewalkers to enter this year or
next year.

The highly successful Coburg events in Victoria has combined ultra runners with
ultra racewalkers for many years.

Wishing you happy racing, training, coaching, judging and/or organizing.

Hi Jon and others

It is good to see another track based long distance walk on offer as such events do allow racewalkers to test themselves out over the longer distances not generally available in our winter fixtures.

However, walkers should note that performances done in such events will not necessarily be automatically recognized as 'Australian Best on Record'. The Australian Centurions maintain and administer the ultra walking records (open and masters) and they are all listed on our Aust Centurions website - see http://home.vicnet.net.au/~austcent/

In particular, we state on our website
Walking is different to running in that a performance must be scrutinized to ensure that the competitor has indeed walked fairly and in the commonsense notion of what  constitutes walking. Hence all record attempts must have the prior approval of the Australian Centurion Walkers.
So you would need to ensure that you have a number of walk savvy people there (like yourself) or some actual walk judges to verify any performances and give us a level of confidence that the performances were indeed walks. Note our definition of what constitutes ultra walking is different to what constitutes racewalking. To quote once again from our website, when we run our own events, we judge as follows:
The Centurions present will judge the race from a technical viewpoint. Our judging criteria are simple. We expect each walker to walk honestly in such a way that he/she is not gaining an unfair advantage over other competitors through his/her mode of walking. We do not expect walkers to strictly comply with current racewalking rules. This is not a racewalk. Each year we see styles ranging from proper racewalking to brisk street walking. All are acceptable.

Walkers will be notified of any style infringements and we will attempt to work with that walker to help him/her modify the walking action to an acceptable mode. A competitor may be retired from the race if repeated warnings do not bring about a satisfactory modification to walking style. This is something that has never been necessary in the 30 years we have been holding such events. We have found that, on the few occasions when we have had to act,  walkers react well to our advice and are able to bring their walking mode back under control.

Walkers are permitted to wear tights in the event of inclement weather but tracksuit pants are not permitted. We must be able to see the legs properly to be able to judge the walker’s mode of walking.
If you think there may be some ultra record attempts made by the walkers at your race, you might like to contact either George Audley, Jim Turnbull or Stan Jones (our 3 WA based members) and see if any of them is in a position to help you monitor the race.

Kind regards

Tim Erickson
Secretary, Australian Centurion Walkers Inc.

HI all

If you have looked up race results or stats on website
http://www.racewalkaustralia.com in the past, you have probably been
frustrated by the slow response times. This was because of the server on
which the site resided.

This has now been fixed with a website relocation and I am pleased to
report that the responses are now lightning fast. Race results are
nearly up to date (only the last 3 weeks to input at this stage and I
hope to catch up in the next week or so).

Kind regards

Tim

HI all

Hot off the presses. A number of Australians walked this morning in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge event in Taicang in China and the results were as follows

Women 20km
Regan Lamble 1:31:39 (PB by 2:29)
Claire Tallent 1:32:39
Beki Lee 1:35:35 (PB 2:41)
Cheryl Webb DNF

Men's 20km
Jared Tallent 4th 1:19:57
Adam Rutter 1:23:48
Brendon Reading 1:24:51 (PB by 2:39)
Rhydian Cowley DNF
Luke Adams DNS (was crook)

Junior 10km
Beth Alexander 49:11

I hear the weather and the course were both very good. Huge PBs by Regan Lamble, Beki Lee and Brendon Reading.

Regan now has that all important A qualifier and should hopefully now find herself being added to the Australian team for this year's World Champs. Chaire has yet another A qualifier with her walk but has already been named in the team so it is just another case of confirming her great form.

Beki has now broken the 1:38:00 qualifying standard for the 2011 World University Games and Brendon has done a further qualifier (well under 1:28:00) so both now look strong selection probabilities.

Well done to everyone on some great walking.

Great news. What an effort by Regan! She certainly seems to have what's required to reach the top. Now, if she can just stay injury free (and if we can get Jess back from injury) ... what depth amongst the women, with Beki coming up and others at home pushing for selection.

Huge effort by Brendon too. The men are also building depth. Just shows what can be done when proper investment in the sport happens, at all levels. Well done, all.

It is with great sadness that I notify the Race Walking fraternity that Albert Johnson passed away today ( Friday). Race Walking Tasmania extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Albert Johnson. Albert  will be fondly remembered for his dedication to coaching many Tasmanian race walkers, distance runners and including taking several to International level. Albert was a past Olympic British walker at the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games. His love of Race walking inspired many walkers throughout Britain, the Isle of Man and Tasmania, but his legacy will continue on.

Hi all

The results from this weekend's Lake Burley Griffin racewalking carnival (including progressive Brennan Points) are now online - see http://www.rwa.org.au/documents/2011LBGResults.pdf

Thanks to Robin Whyte for the results and congratulations to the organizing committee for another wonderful event which went without issue - even the Canberra weather was kind to us.

I am still on the road but will be home later this evening and will then start on my weekly newsletter and add a few comments to complement the bare results.

Kind regards
