What time (aust) and date are the Racewalking events on? I know one
of the Mens is on the 16th. Are they being shown on tv or is a wait
and see?
Thanks
Phil

Andrew Jamieson who finished second in the Victorian Open Men 30 km. His time of 2:29:46 bettered his own M60 World Record by nearly 1 minute. This will be duly submitted to WMA. Andrew, aged 62 years of age, owns all the M60 world records except for the 50 km mark and he is working on that one.
Good on you Geogia! Great to see the race walkers showing their funny side and some excellent publicity as well.
I'm sure Deakesy would be proud too!
Keep it up.

MADRID,
July 27 (Xinhua) -- Spanish walker Paquillo Fernandez gave himself the
perfect send-off for the Olympic Games on Sunday when he smashed the
world 10km race walk record.
Racing in the Spanish Championships, held on the
island of Tenerife, Fernandez, the silver medal winner in Athens four
years ago, took five seconds off the previous record, which had been
held by the Italian Ivano Brugnetti, as he clocked a time of 37:53:09
for the event.
Interestingly, Brugnetti is the
reigning Olympic champion, having beaten Fernandez in the 20km walk in
the 2004 Athens Games.
After the race Fernandez confessed
he was amazed at the achievement, above all because the race took place
at 17.00 hrs, almost the hottest hour of the day.
"I am really surprised because all
of the elements were against me setting a good time: the heat and the
time of the race," he told the official website of the Spanish
Athletics Federation.
"Nevertheless my will to win was
vital and I gave it everything. I went as fast as possible in the last
400 meters, even though I never knew I was in with a chance of setting
a world record," he said, looking ahead to the Olympic challenge.
"After this race, it is obvious
that I am in form and going to aim for a medal in Beijing, although I
will find some very difficult rivals there. I am going to travel to
Matsue (Japan) on August 3 to finish my preparation and from there, I
will go to Beijing," said Fernandez, who must be considered favorite
for a gold medal at the Games.
'A sporting moment happens once. A split second in time, captured forever. Such moments live in the minds of the people: who competed, who were there, and who pass their stories from generation to generation.
They shape our collective view of ourselves and our country. They become a blueprint for what we value, an inspiration for all.'
In November 2007 the Athletics International (AI) Committee agreed to select the top 10 moments in Australian Athletics. The initial plan was that from this list AI members – and persons eligible for membership - would vote to determine the ‘Top Moment in Australian Athletics’
A Sub Committee made up of Trevor Vincent (AI Committee – S/C chair), Len Johnson (The Age sports journalist), and Paul Jenes (Athletics Australia Statistician) was appointed to develop the top 10 moments.
The AI Committee agreed that the moments must be directly related to an athletics event (so no ‘lighting the flame’ type moments)
Trevor, Len, and Paul met a number of times and had regular phone/email exchanges. They sought input widely to establish a ‘long list’, with about 60 moments ultimately identified.
Input was provided by a range of ‘knowledgeable’ persons on their personal top 10, and at their final meeting the Sub Committee agreed on their top 10, after initially cutting the list down to around 15.
‘The Age’ was quick to show interest in our initiative – and as a result this (Victorian) newspaper will now run our top 10 in the sport pages of next Sunday’s edition (Sunday 27th July). Readers will be asked to vote for their top moment – with the winning moment decided and announced pre the athletics program of the Beijing Olympic Games. The voting will be done electronically – via ‘The Age’ website ( www.theage.com.au )– which we expect will carry a full description of each moment as well as perhaps footage where available.
This note is both to alert you to the appearance of our Top Ten Moments in the ‘Sunday Age’ and to encourage you to cast your vote.
We are also conducting an ‘in house’ vote amongst AI members – to see if we agree with the ‘public’, given our closeness to the sport and perhaps better appreciation/different perspective of the moments, especially those from the fairly distant past.
Would you please send your vote to John Murray on email: athinter@... by Friday 15th August. If you wish to send your vote by mail please address it to John at: 18 Lee Ann St, Blackburn South 3130
Then watch for the results of both votes in the next AI Newsletter.
A listing and description of each of the Top Ten Moments is attached
Top 10 Moments
BETTY CUTHBERT – 100m (+) – MELBOURNE 1956
Australia had not hosted an Olympic Games before Melbourne. Australian had not had a home gold medallist _ until Betty Cuthbert streamed down the brick-red cinder track on the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the 100 metres. Unknown a few months earlier, the Sydney teen went on to win the 200 and anchor the 4x100 metres relay to take three gold medals and become the face of the 1956 Games.
CATHY FREEMAN – 400m – SYDNEY 2000
The hopes of a nation, and a second, aboriginal, nation within that nation, rested on Cathy Freeman’s shoulders in the 400 metres final in Sydney. The biggest crowd ever to watch an Olympic event -112,000+ spectators – willed her on. Cathy delivered, winning with something to spare in 49.11 seconds. For a wonderful moment, the entire Australian nation rejoiced as one.
CLARKE FALL – OLYMPIC PARK, MELBOURNE, 1956
A sub-4 minute mile was expected every time John Landy ran in 1956, and a world record a distinct possibility. But the spectators crammed into Olympic Park for the mile at the national championships got something they did not expect. John Landy loitered mid-field; there was a fall in front of him and, as he hurdled the fallen Ron Clarke, John’s spikes raked his shoulder and arm. Concerned, he went back to see if Ron was alright, then chased and caught the field to win going away. It was later acclaimed the greatest Australian sporting moment of the 20th century.
HERB ELLIOTT – 1500m – ROME 1960
For a little over 800 metres, the Rome Olympic 1500 metres was a race. For the rest, it was a demonstration of the ruthless talent of Australia’s running machine, Herb Elliott. Unleashing a paralysing burst of speed along the back straight, Herb sped through the third lap in 56 seconds and continued at the same speed all the way home. Gold medal; world record; biggest winning margin in Olympic history; Herb Elliott did it all.
JOHN LANDY/ROGER BANNISTER CLASH – 1 MILE – VANCOUVER 1954
The Vancouver stadium was packed. Forty million people were glued to their television sets across North America. The world’s third-best miler, Wes Santee, provided commentary as the two best, Roger Bannister of England and John Landy of Australia, did battle in the Empire Games mile. Landy made the pace, made the race, but he did not win it; Bannister got by him off the final bend to win by five yards. Thanks to John Landy, the only two men ever to have broken four minutes did so again in a memorable championship race.
MARJORIE JACKSON – 100m (+) – HELSINKI 1952
Australia had had Olympic gold medallists before, but never a dominant Olympic champion until Marjorie Jackson. Marjorie won two gold medals in Helsinki, and a third went begging when the baton went down in the final exchange between teammate Winsome Cripps and herself in the relay. But it was the 100 metres which set the tone: Marjorie won by almost a full four-tenths of a second, equalling the world record and becoming Australia’s first-ever female Olympic track and field gold medallist.
PETER NORMAN – DAIS – MEXICO CITY 1968
Peter Norman’s effort in running 20.06 for second in the 200 metres Olympic final was stunning enough, but it is his support of the human rights’ protest by American gold and bronze medallists – Tommie Smith and John Carlos – on the victory dais that is etched in people’s memory. The two Americans made a silent and compelling Black Power protest on behalf of black Americans. Norman wore a civil rights badge and endorsed their gesture. The image is one of the most powerful of the 20th century.
RALPH DOUBELL – 800m – MEXICO CITY 1968
Many people expected Ralph Doubell would run well in Mexico City. But a gold medal? And an equal world record? Few expected that. The 800 was the crossover distance as far as high altitude went: the sprints would definitely be assisted, the distance events restricted, but the impact on the 800 was a guess. Doubell’s timing was right. He had recovered from an achilles injury and he had Franz Stampfl instilling confidence. He rehearsed his win in the semi-finals, running down Kenya’s Wilson Kiprugut, and he did precisely the same in the final. His national record still stands.
ROB DE CASTELLA – MARATHON – BRISBANE 1982
It was Australia’s most unforgettable breakfast. Early one October morning, the Commonwealth Games marathon field went to the start next to the Brisbane River. ‘Deek’, as he was widely known, was overwhelming favourite, but that belief, not to mention his confidence, was tested as Tanzanian duo Juma Ikangaa and Gidamis Shahanga raced off into a big lead. De Castella set out after them from 25k on and, after a brief, but intense, duel with Ikangaa nearing 40k, ran home to a memorable victory.
RON CLARKE – WORLD RECORD – 10,000m 1965
The Oslo Bislett Games is one of the world’s most prestigious meetings. Ron Clarke’s world record for 10,000 metres, set in 1965, was voted the best performance in Bislett Games history 25 years later. It was that good. Clarke and his friend, Jim Hogan, had to hunt round for a third competitor to make the race record-eligible. Even had 20 more run, however, none would have stuck with Ron Clarke that night. He wiped almost 40 seconds off his own world record for 10,000. In a year in which he redefined the possible in track distance running, Oslo was the stand-out performance.

The news about Nathan’s withdrawal
from the Olympics with hamstring trouble has now rebounded around Australia
and I know that I speak on behalf of all walkers for the disappointment that he
must be feeling . Nathan is a fantastic ambassador for racewalking and
has lifted the profile of racewalking all over the country . We can only
trust that he recovers fully and gets back to the record breaking form that has
been his trademark over the last few years . We have an amazingly strong racewalking
team to represent Australia
in the Olympics this year and Nathan will be sorely missed. It’s now
up to the rest of the team to raise the flag for Australia and we wish them well.

According to SEN reports the tendon's come off the bone at the hamstring
meaning an operation and a 6-9 month recuperation period.

Just heard a report on radio SEN that sadly
Nathan has been ruled out of the Olympics with that on-going hamstring
complaint. Pity given the extraordinary hard work and effort he has put
into it. Hopefully there's another chance in 4 years.

It would be helpful if someone from NSW walkers club could send in
their racewalking challenge result to Mark Donahoo at

as the results cannot be compiled until NSW results are received.
Below are the interim results of the racewalking challenge. The
spaces where only the club name appears means the club did not have a
competitor in the event. Unfortunately NSW RWC have not submitted any

Three Olympic reps all up. Kevin Eastler, 30, who has an A Quali from
last year and now getting over injuries, Joanne Dow ,44, and Phillip
Dunn, 35, earlier in the year in the 50km, the latter 2 having B
qualis. While there were a few PB's the sport's certainly struggling
badly there at the minute at both senior and junior level.

The effects of the weather were visible in the final 10 kilometres,Klimov and Thompson, who collapsed completely at 42 kilometres when infifth place, being among those who did not finish. Ljunggren finishedstrongly, making up three minutes on Maskinskov in the last five kilometres, butthere was a big gap after Parmich had finished in fourth place, onlysixcompetitors completing the course inside five hours, a reflection oftheexhausting conditions in which the race was held.
Hi all
I have now uploaded a new page to the VRWC website to host the latest
information about the 2008 Australian Roadwalking championships and the
second 2008 Racewalking Australia carnival which are being jointly held
at Albert Park on Sunday 24 August.
Point browsers to http://www.vrwc.org.au and choose the item labelled
'Australian Roadwalking Championships, Sunday 24 August 2008' on the
front page.
Please review the information contained therein and contact me if there
are any items that you think need clarifying.
Kind regards and good luck to all our walkers who are preparing for
these important championships.
