December 2008
The Terry Fox Foundation
Looking for Candidates willing to
Go the Distance
Dear Terry Foxer: More Information
About the Foundation
Proposed Plan
Do You Have What it Takes?
Deadline: January 8th, 2009
In the three decades since the Marathon of Hope, many
different writers have tried to explain, to an increasingly jaded
world, how a young man would be willing to sacrifice himself for
the sake of others. Terry's compassion, his integrity, his
benevolence, his focus, made him a truly unique individual.
And so it is understandable that the focus would be on Terry as
a person, his desire to alleviate the suffering of so many, and
the remarkable legacy that continues to this very day.
Yet often overlooked is his almost superhuman capacity to run,
on one good leg, a marathon a day for 143 days. Terry's
remarkable humanitarian effort was matched by an athletic
accomplishment that has never been repeated.
A Symbolic Journey
With this in mind The Terry Fox Foundation is presently considering a proposal
that would illustrate in detail
what Terry accomplished in 1980.
The event will reacquaint new and existing generations with Terry's example of
athleticism, determination and
self-sacrifice. It is only an idea at the moment and has a number of "subject
to" clauses.
Proposed Plan
Theplan at this time is to have two teams of twelve
runners start in St. Johns and Victoria on April 12th. Each
participant will attempt to run 3,339 miles in 143 days,
matching Terry's daily mileage, meeting in Thunder Bay
on Labour Day weekend.
There will be a one hour casting special to air in April in
CBC primetime where the participants will be introduced,
the stakes will be set for the run and Terry's enduring and
building legacy will be highlighted. This will be followed by a
feature that would appear weekly on the National or CBC
News Sunday that would provide an update on the runners
and their fundraising efforts. There would also be a one
hour (or more) special on Labour Day.
A website will be created that would present the diaries of
the runners, offer up to date features and allow a click
through to our website for online donations.
Do You Have What It Takes to Go the Distance?
Theparticipants will be chosen based on the following:
1. You have been inspired by Terry's story and have a history of supporting
Terry's vision and principles
2. You are willing and able to undertake fundraising for the Foundation
3. You believe in your ability to physically complete the challenge - and can
prove it!
4. You are willing and able to put aside work/other commitments for 4.5 or more
months
Now Is Your Time to Convince Us!
If you would like to participate as a runner in this historic event, please
reply to marathonofhope2009@..., sending us your contact
information and telling us why you are the ideal candidate for the show.
We want to get a sense of who you are and what motivates you to apply
for this kind of challenge. Don't forget to mention how cancer research
would benefit from your effort.
In addition, we ask that you please create a 3-5 minute video so we can see you
in action. Your video should
include: Your name, age, hometown and why you want to be a participant in the
Marathon of Hope 2009.
Please upload your video to YouTube.
Please notify us immediately by sending the URL when you've uploaded your video.
We look forward
to hearing from you!
Deadline for applications: January 8, 2009

I think it's a great idea to see a group run across Canada to honor Terry
Fox and continue to raise funds for such a great cause. Thanks for sharing
this info.
In 1980, my dad and I had the good fortune of witnessing the start of Terry's
journey in St.John's. With just 5 months prior to the start of the my cross
country running in high school, my dad constantly reminded me of how much
easier it would be to run cross country while keeping Terry's run in mind.
Twenty eight years later, Terry fox is still an inspiration to me.
I wish all runners on this list the best in the New Year. Try to keep Terry
in mind when you dread having to run on a cold and windy, winter's day.
Cheers,
Tony Martin

I am interested, and I have applied to participate in the Marathon of
Hope 2009. As mentioned below, this is a fund-raising effort for
cancer research, involving a re-creation of Terry Fox's 1980 journey
from St. John's to Thunder Bay.
The CBC is working in conjunction with the Terry Fox Foundation on
this project. 12 participants will be selected, based on a written
application and a video application which will be reviewed by the
CBC.
I have already submitted my written application, in which I mention
my previous fund-raising experience (JDRF Ride for Diabetes Research,
Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion, Toronto Santa Speedo Run for SickKids,
Achilles Canada) and my running background.
My video application can be viewed on YouTube. Please feel free to
take a look at it, give it a rating, and post a comment on YouTube.
Rumour has it that CBC will be considering the number of times that
applicants' videos have been viewed on YouTube, the viewer ratings,
and the viewer comments.
If you watch the video, you will notice that I wasn't really
concerned with making a slick production out of it. I mainly just
wanted to let the CBC see a bit of me. Anyway, here's the link to my
video application:
In case you're wondering, I was licking my lips in the video because
my mouth was dry, but I didn't want to stop recording to take a drink
and then have to start all over again.
If they select me to be one of the 12 runners, I hope some OUSers
will come and join me for part of the journey, since I would not be
able to come and join you at any OUS events between April and
September.

Way to go Jim (Orr) for entering an application to the Terry Fox Marathon of
Hope 2009 program. I too have made an entry and like you would dearly like to be
one of the 12 selected to honour Terry and fundraise for the Terry Fox
Foundation.
I wasn't going to mention it to anyone but if you're right about the number of
hits and ratings increasing our chances then I would like to invite anyone to
please visit my site also.
One day before the Jan.08th deadline my daughter Emilee talked me into doing a
video as she knew how important it would be for me to do this run. In half a day
with a little digital camera and a lap top her and her friend whipped up this
video entry for me. It's amazing what kids can do these days.
What I say on the video is with utter sincerity. I believe Terry is the greatest
Canadian who ever lived. No other Canadian has had such a positive influence on
this country.
P.S. (Ron, congratulations for last year and, yes; that is the elephant mountain
in the background on my video.)
All the best in the New Year to everyone in OUSland.
this is the video site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br70iIelU-E Thanks,
Jim.

What would be really neat is for everyone who applied be allowed to run.
After all, you are all extremely talented and motivated.
Hard decision for your friends, too. because we do know more than one the
applicants.
But , good luck to all and for your dedication to the cause.
Cheers

I watched most of the You Tube's on the marathon of Hope run and it was very
inspiring to see so many motivated runners that have given their sport meaning.
I agree with Duff and think all the applicants should do this run! Cynthia...
Good luck to the OUSer runners

Jim and Jim: Great good luck to both of you. There should be spots
for more than one runner from Ontario. Lee Anne was very tempted to
apply. She even ran 40K 3 days in a row in the snow. Being a teacher,
her challenge is getting time off before the end of the school year.
Let's hit the youtubes!

I have watched the youtubes from both Jims. I plan to watch them a few more
times if that will help increase the odds of getting selected.
I didn't realize these guys have both running and acting talent !
Good luck to everyone who is applying. This is truly a once-in-lifetime
opportunity to honour a Canadian hero and further a worthy cause.

As they have both mentioned that the number of "hits" is also one of the
criteria that the selection committee would
consider. So given how many of you out there that read these
emails and how many of you how have run with these 2 guys...
So please view these videos!

Hi Folks - Just wanted to let you know that the proposed Marathon of Hope
2009 will not be taking place. As an applicant, I was informed of this
decision by the Terry Fox Foundation today. Perhaps Jim Newin and I should
try to run from St. John's to Thunder Bay ourselves anyway. I had been
preparing for the challenge of running 23 miles per day for 143 days by
increasing my weekly training mileage. I had also been planning what I
could do to raise funds and different ways of getting people from running
groups and clinics and corporations involved in organizing fund-raising
activities, such as runs, walks, bake sales, book sales, etc...
I really hope an event such as the proposed Marathon of Hope 2009 does
happen one day as I believe it has enormous potential to generate a lot of
money for cancer research. I am old enough to remember Terry's 1980 run,
and I think those of our generation are ready to be moved by his story
again. As well, those of a generation born after us need to be aware of
Terry's shining example of how life should be lived. His Marathon of Hope
stands as one of the greatest athletic and personal achievements of all
time. I don't know whether I could have run as far as he did in as many
days, but I would have been very proud to have paid tribute to him in the
attempt.
Many thanks for your support!
