I've heard the Tecumseh Trail marathon is also good, but usually sells out.
Good luck,

Anyone know of a local late fall race or fun run? Something around 25 -
50K? I have to get Lee Anne out of the house.
The soon to be late Pierre Marcoux.

We usually go to Tecumseh every year, as it is a great event, but due to a later
Thanksgiving this year, they moved the race date and a few guys could not make
it. It is usually the first day of hunting season and your run is accompanied
by gun shots most of way. It has been sold out for a while.
We are planning on going to Virginia in late March for the Bel Monte 50K.

Not much local that I know of, but I ran the Huff 50k in Indiana last year and
it's a good little event in late December: http://allsportcent ral.com/EventInf

Perhaps fun runs or impromptu group runs a la Monica are the way to
go. I'd love to organize a winter fun run on the trails near
Creemore, if I can find 2 - 3 people willing to kill themselves by
packing down the 4 feet of snow on the trails (I'm in!) before the
group starts.

Is anyone interested in doing some snowshoe racing this winter? I was thinking
that we could organize a 5km to 10km race somewhere,(Ganaraska/Horeshoe Valley
perhaps), followed by a barbeque. I suggest late January.
I haven't done any running since early October. I was bucked off a horse. He
then stepped on my calf. Still hobbling around (me, that is). I am swimming and
'pool running' five or six days a week. Pool running is a great way to do low
impact cardio. I should be going back to work in a couple of weeks.

I have never tried snowshoes, and would like to. I was encouraged to come
to the Peaks race, Pittsfield Snowshoe Marathon in Vermont, but I think I
would rather start with something a bit more sensible (I know, not my normal
style). So a 5k or 10k sounds like a great idea.

It is now 'probable' that we will be having a couple of snowshoe races here in
Huntsville on Jan 25th. They will be at Arrowhead Provincial Park, and will be
held in conjunction with the Muskoka Ski Loppet. These are classic crosscountry
ski races for anyone who would prefer skiing.
The snowshoe course is about 3.5 km. It will be run once or three times, so
3.5km or 10.5km. It is a fast flat course that will be packed down with an
Alpine. There are only a few rules. The snowshoes need to have an area of 120
square inches or more. They must be worn for the entire race. I am checking to
see if poles are allowed. Race entry fee will be $25, which includes lunch.
The website for the ski racing is www.arrowheadnordic.ca
I say 'probable' because we still need final approval from Arrowhead Nordic. I
need to go to them with approximate numbers.
Anyone who comes here is welcome to 'camp out' in my basement on the Saturday
night. It has a concrete floor and a wood stove. Bring a sleeping pad. We can
have a barbeque that night . There is a great fire pit we can cook over.
Arrowhead Park is a really good venue and the ski club puts on a first class
event. I would like to see snowshoe racing grow here in Ontario so that we have
some winter races to look forward to.
Get back to me as soon as you can

I am also in in in for any snowshoe event. Although I would be much happier if

Looking for the perfect gift? Give the gift of Flickr!
I'll have to check out the Dion snow shoes. Can you get 5 of them?
(Dion quintuplets...) I've logged about 400 hours on my Chubbs thanks
to making maple syrup, so running in them is not an option.
Do you need groomed trails for the Dions? My neighbors and I have a
closed trail system through about 500 acres near Collingwood. We
should meet for a fun run. There is normally a snowmobile track laid
down by the neighbors. Right now there is 1.5 feet of snow!

I'd definitely give you a deal on 5 pairs of Dion's ;)
I have used the Dion Running #121 model for training and racing on groomed
and ungroomed trails.
Like any other snowshoe, the more surface area, the better the floatation on
deep, ungroomed snow. However, the more surface area, also the less
comfortable for running. The Dion 121's are 7" wide x 21' long, so you don't
have to alter your normal running stride much if any. One of the problems
with some snowshoes is if they are too wide, you can have problems with
constantly hitting the inside of your ankles (ouch). If you have a
snowmobile trail laid down, you would find that snowshoe running is much
faster and easier than on ungroomed trails.
You have 1.5 feet of snow??? Man, I'm jealous!

I went up to the bush on Monday to cut some trees and found a foot of
snow! Quite cool as I was in running shoes...
I'll contact you offline regarding snowshoes... Isn't Christmas in
less than 4 months? (Lee Anne - are you reading this?)

I agree with Derrick. Smaller is better when it comes to running in snowshoes. I
have an older pair of Atlas shoes that are about 22 inches by eight and a half.
They weigh a little over a pound each. I have run in up to six inches of snow.
There is no float with these shoes so the more packed the trail the better. It
is a great workout.
I would join you for a run on your trails Pierre.
I am trying to contact a Mike Pidwerbecki of the Ganaraska Trail Assoc(Orillia
section) re doing a race there in January.
Huntsville has a ski loppet in late January also. I am talking to them about
also offering a couple of snowshoe races. One would be 3 to 5km, the other 6 to
10km. Who would also be interested in this?
We also could make some good trails near my house. We live about 5 km west of
Huntsville.
I'll have to check out the Dion snow shoes. Can you get 5 of them? (Dion
quintuplets...) I've logged about 400 hours on my Chubbs thanks to making maple
syrup, so running in them is not an option.Do you need groomed trails for the
Dions? My neighbors and I have a closed trail system through about 500 acres
near Collingwood. We should meet for a fun run. There is normally a snowmobile
track laid down by the neighbors. Right now there is 1.5 feet of snow!--- In ous-l@yahoogroups.com, "Aaron Anderson" <airman155@...> wrote:>> Dion snow shoes

Awesome idea! Bring it on. I can definitely use the practise. It would
be great for crosstraining too :))
Cheers,

Hey all,
Is anyone interested in doing some snowshoe racing this winter? I was thinking
that we could organize a 5km to 10km race somewhere,(Ganarask a/Horeshoe Valley
perhaps), followed by a barbeque.

Not much local that I know of, but I ran the Huff 50k in Indiana last year and
it's a good little event in late December: http://allsportcent ral.com/EventInf

usually sells out.Good luck,VC ____________ _________ _________ __From: Pierre
