Because I usually spend my summers injured, this is essentially my first
year running these trail series events (though I signed up for a couple
last year, scratched on one and hobbled the other), and I enjoy each one
more than the last. I just found this Yahoo group and I must say that
this is one fine bunch of folks, and the organizers and volunteers do an
exceptional job : stopping traffic, feeding the hordes, even
personalizing the rocks!. I feel very privileged to be a part of this
long-distance trail stuff, and it seems like it can't last. With
thousands of people running plain drab road marathons, I figure it's
only a matter of time before entry for this sort of event will be a 10:1
lottery! Really, this is just the bee's knees.

I almost literally wound up with more than my fair share of souvenirs.
After collecting my bib, binoculars, Advil, Bruce Trail literature, I
thought to myself "t-shirt" and turned around and there they were! I
grabbed one off the table and stuffed it in my (2004 Toad) bag. I
proudly donned it (still didn't look at it) after my celebratory,
post-finish, cold shower, and several people asked me where I got it, so
I told them. They didn't seem convinced. But they didn't tell me off,
either. Rather odd, whatever... But it was my six year old son who
looked me straight in the eye and asked "Why are you wearing a
volunteer's shirt?" Wha...? You see, he passed his trail "quiz" whereas
mum got the big dunce cap. Oh, that's what this big, huge, conspicuous,
can't-possibly-miss-it "V" means! Doh! I shuffled back to the car to
change. After a few sniffs to ensure that the cold shower had done its
job, I returned it to the table.....

Hey, I didn't get lost, and I forded the creek.....

A hearty thanks again to all who made it possible, and 'till next time
(and maybe, eventually, an ultra -- thanks Dwayne),

Jody L.

Hi everyone
I started a new Canada ultra blog
triple w dot ultrarace.blogspot.com

It will focus on races, trails, personalities,
nutrition and everything ultra. I am going to try and
not be west coast centric so send me info, stories,
race updates.

I am going to be composing an ultra personalities list
so I might be contacting you.

I just started it and it and it will evolve, but I
hope it can add some excitement to our excellent
running scene.

Hello,

I'm looking for a pacer for the last 25 miles at Haliburton. I hope to finish
in under 24 hours. My most recent 100 mile times are: Vermont (2 years ago) in
22:40, Heartland in the fall in 19:57 and Umstead this spring in 20:28.

I'm figuring that I'll be a bit slower since this is single track. I would have
to estimate the time that I'd be at 75 miles.

If anyone is interested, please contact me at wtmanspetrefuge@... .

Thanks!

Hi All,

A very brief and not so hot version of the new on line ultrarunning
magazine In The Long Run has been posted in the file section.

Send letters, stories, reports, reviews, etc to
johnremington@... as the real version will be out mid-
September.

Race adverts are $10 per page and minor editing free. Adverts will
be for three editions of this new monthly ultrarunning magazine. The
mag will be supplied free to subscribers once the launch has occured
in mid-September.

The intention is to supply more upto date info than Marathon &
Beyond can and to have a decent magazine to cover northern and
eastern continental America. Full colour of course and no issues
with delivery:-)

Yours,

John

Hi All,

The lovely Leslie and myself headed for a night in London just
because it is my 42nd and we decided to go running. Stayed in the
Sheraton Four Points and headed north on Wellington. Stopped at
tourist info booth and enquired about running. Pointed to the bike
path by the river. No ta!

I decided to run across the field behind the info booth and we then
hit small but wonderous trails. Two runs in there and both were
cool. Trail markings were OUS standard so we never were really sure
where we were. I think there's around 5km of trail in there and very
scenic and runnable. Saw no one even on our Saturday run.

Next trip to Statford and we'll reprise the London thing just for
that trail. Oh, Ghosts by Ibsen is well worth seeing this year but
Henry IV part 1 not so great.

Cheers,

John

Hello everyone,

I just finished talking with Helen, who is busy up in Haliburton getting
ready for her September 9th Trail Race in the Forest. Earlier, there were
individuals looking for accommodations in the area without any luck; Helen
tells me that in Minden there is the Silver Maple Motel that has rooms
available. If interested, call (705) 457-2607.

On another note, the training run(s) in the Forest last weekend were great,
considering all the tornadoes that had touched down in the area on the
preceding Wednesday. Krista Trail was hit the hardest and had many trees
down along the trail, which made for a very interesting run. Actually, it
made for an awesome run; I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Helen
mentioned that the Forest crews have been working hard and will have
everything ready before race day. I just checked the online registrations
and there are 35 entered in the 100 Miler, more than any other event that
day; some from as far away as Norway.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend at ITT and again in
Haliburton Forest.

Happy trails,

Gord

Stanley, hopefully Helen will be able to sort out the pricing
issue. Glad to see you will be joining us in the forest.

However, I think the real learning here is for me to stick to the
dates and not terms like 'today' and 'tomorrow'. These short weeks
are very confusing for me and I thought I had actually sent my
original email out on the 9th.

Cheers, Sharon
