John and others,

If all you want to do is use the Yahoogroups for receiving and sending e-mail messages to/from the group, you can do it like this:
To join the OUS-L group, send a blank message to:
ous-l-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
But if you want to use the YahooGroups services on the web at
then you will have to sign up for a Yahoo ID.

Just to repeat some of the advantages:
* You can view all the archived messages on the web.
* You can see the list of existing members (21 so far).
* You can upload and download files.  Currently 4 Western States photos by Scott Myers are in this area.

Make sure your browser accepts and returns "cookies" to Yahoo. Without them
you may have trouble, although at the moment everything is wide open, so
anyone can post and anyone can read, as far as I'm aware. I'll leave it
like that until someone abuses it, or it appears unnecessarily risky.

> give up and send out individual e mails once the ous-l address fails.

It won't fail for the forseeable future. I'll just leave the list with one
member, that being Yahoo.

If any one is interested I have raced in Asics racing flats in every 100K I've entered. In January I ran the Avalon 50 in the mountains of Santa Catalina California (actually 52 because I went off course) in under 7 hours. I've never had any foot problems that you wouldn't get from any other shoes  racing any distance on any surface - hills or flat. I never train in racing flats though. The lack of support would surely cause problems over time..
The last three miles of the Avalon 50 are straight down the mountain and parts of the Haney to Harrison have some wicked hills. I find racing flats ideal in those circumstances.

Do what ever works best for you!  Herb

Hi All,
I will jump in here in support of Naeem and the racing flat thing.
Initially when I met Naeem I disagreed with his choice of shoes and I still
believe racing flats are a bad choice for trails rugged or not. Now George
Sarson would disagree with me if he was aware of this because he uses racing
flats on trails. He believes they let him "feel" the rocks and he bounces
along.
Since those conversations I do now believe the problems with asphalt running
are running too fast; running too long; not changing shoes. At Kingston I
used the NB 829 which is a stripped down trainer. They worked fine until my
toes blistered which is because the shoes don't fit as they should due to my
arch problems. I have done a few marathons in racing flats with no problems.
If you train in flats race in them.
Now trails I have to still disagree with George. The added bumper on the toe
box is vital as is the beefed up grips. Also landing on rocks and twigs in
flats cause bruising to my soles.
So what I hear you ask? Just felt guilty because I originally held Naeem to
task for racing flats in his first ultra. Thank goodness he didn't listen to
me but kept experimenting. Also I did a three hour treadmill workout
yesterday with no music and no breaks so my mind has gone into UltraHell.
Au Revoir,
Juan

Hi John & others,

I am also weary about attachments. If its an .exe I'll never open it.
.Jpg, .tif, .doc, .xls etc I'll open if I trust the source & the filename
makes sense. If there's any doubt I delete. Better to miss a joke than get

Hi gang

I'm off on vacation for three weeks starting in 30 minutes.

We are doing the train trip from Toronto ( via Brockville )
to Vancouver. will then ferry over to Victoria and explore
Vancouver Island for about a week. I think I can find a few
hills over there to run on to get me ready for Haliburton.

On our train trip back we make a three day stopover in Edmonton
to let the kids run around that big mall.

If the train is going 80km per hour and I run on the spot for
one hour can I log an 80km run ?

Take care.

Gooday Jim, Dom and other sublime warriors,

I love to run on horse trails in Decatur and even over boulders in Austin
with my trusted New Balance 903 Trail Whackers. But when it comes to a road
race like the Austin Motorola Marathon, I witnessed that I can racewalk
faster than I can run on a hard smooth asphalt surface, and sustain no
injury or pain from pounding.

"Experience is not WHAT happens to you, it's what you DO with what happens
to you". After the experience in Austin Marathon I always approach roadraces
with worldclass racewalking technique taught by Dave McGovern. A technique
when mastered, will let my legs deliver a Marathon time of 3:45 god willing.
This technique relies heavily on my contact with the road directly beneath
my feet. Worldclass performance and speed can be acieved by having a
flexible sole that is very flat and very thin. Hence my choice of the Nike
Air Streak II racing flats.

Alhamdulillah my bones or ligaments did not sustain any injury at all. Just
my hamstrings complained, but they were already tight before I started
anyways. Although this was my first 100km, I was confident to do it in sub
14 hours - next year inshallah - maybe even Dave McGovern will join me, he
has no excuse. He will only join me for Comrades in South Africa when the
temperature in Hades can sustain water in a solid state.

Cheers,

Naeem

They could, but that means more work for me!
The simpler way is what I described earlier this morning - storing them in the
files section of yahoogroups website.

I tried it out and it works great. But before you can use this service of
YahooGroups
you have to join up.

There is a button on http://ous.kw.net that links you to the form for joining.

Here is a good reason to use the new yahoogroups list!
The existing mailing list does not allow attachments to be sent with messages.

Yahoogroups does allow it but it may not be a good idea because many people
do not want their mailboxes to get filled up with unnecessary files.
Instead what Scott can do is go to the Yahoogroups website for ous-l and put
the pictures in the file storage area. Then anybody who wants to look at them
can go there and download them.

Another advantage of using Yahoogroups is that instead of (or in addition to)
reading messages by e-mail or e-mail digest you can read them on the web. The
messages are archived there.

To make it easy for people to join I will have a simple form set up on the OUSer
in a day or two.

Hi Scott!

I'd love to see the photos but they weren't attached?!  Can you resend them?

Happy trails, Monica

Reference photo 1:  At least I thought I was smarter by the end cuz I posted a photo of the end that I thought was a photo of the start, proving I am perhaps less smart having run WS.

Not that anyone is interested anymore, but I'm going to attempt to attach a few snaps to this email.

1.  Me at the start looking fresh & stupid.  I look much wiser by the end.
2.  Monica ripping up the trails - and she's only building speed at this point!
3.  Me at Robinson Flat (50 K) and looking cranky already!
4.  Monica looking somehow much more showered than I.  Notice my wife Laurie in a position of worship of Monica's sub-24.

Hope this doesn't take too long for you dial-up types to load.  Sorry if it does.

Hi Gile, I'm testing out my new group subsription through Yahoo.
I'm not sure what I actual just did but somehow I think I have
linked a new yahoo name to my work email name. I will unsubsribe
my previous ous subsription after I know this works. Thanks for
all your work past, present and future on the OUS site.

Jim.

Folks,

Following the advice of someone on the OUS list (thanks, you know who you are!)
I am considering moving the OUS-l mailing list over to Yahoo Groups. See
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ous-l. I no longer have the time, energy, and
perhaps soon the resources to manage this list, and it looks as though the
Yahoo stuff can do a better job than I.

So, I have subscribed ous-l@yahoogroups.com to our current list, which
means that mail to the current list will also go there. So please take a
look and decide wether you like it. If you do please subscribe there and
unsubscribe from the current list (send a message to majordomo@...
with the single line `unsubscribe ous-l' in it). I'm tempted to just mass
subscribe everybody, but you may not like that, and at least if you do it
yourselves the dead e-mail addresses in the current list are dropped.

Submissions to ous-l@... will still be distributed as normal as well
as going to Yahoo. Submissions to ous-l@yahoogroups.com however will go
only there. So we should keep using the current address for the forseeable
future if we do this switch. I can arrange for such mail to be forwarded
for the forseeable future.

Thanks, and let's hear what you think.

Just an initial test message, as I wonder just how much spam this will
generate.
