Sharon thanks for the update - the trail is a great one, but I just got off the
Red Trail yesterday and its obviously closed for a reason - Ben's has allot of
trees down and that's primarily what I was refeencing - and I have informed the
office about them several times - the trail is a great one and as I am local to
the Haliburton area it will be a race I run for as long as I can run.
If you're ever looking for someone to run the course with drop me an email - I
am usually on the course 3-4 times per week.
All the best,
Oliver

I have run the entire course except the end of the red trail at the 25 mile
turnaround (I get on at the green trail) since the snowstorm at the end of May
this year.
There are two parts to the red trail -one section from the King & James to the
25 mile turnaround and one section from the 6.4k on Helen's map to the start of
the normac.
The section that Oliver is referring to is the part closest to normac. The
section of red that the course runs on is only a couple hundred meters at the
very most. Yes, there has been logging on it but I found it in better shape
than it has been for a while. The section of red trail (from the green trail to
the north road) has been widened quite a bit by logging but the race does not
use this section at all. I haven't been on dog since the snow storm and did not
see a sign posted about the red trail at that time - but the snow and hall was
thick at times. :>
For ben's I have been in to talk to the Forest at base camp to talk to them
about the downed trees (Oliver, they don't know that they are down unless you
tell them) and some of them have been removed since May. Of course with mother
nature there is no guarantee that that something won't come down in the mean
time. I have cleaned away all the smaller stuff that I can manage on my own -
quite a bit came down over the winter.
Ben's looks exactly the same as it has for a while so not sure what section is
beaten up. The end of the trail closest to the spur from Redstone vista is
still the same from logging a couple of years ago. Ben's is still my favourite
trail in the forest.
Blackcreek corduroy road section is the same as it ever was. Lookout grass
wasn't too long - but that was a while ago. Generally, I thought the course was
in great shape.
I didn't see any black bears but did see the 'evidence' a couple of places on
the trail. Fortunately we don't have grizzlies in Ontario.
If you are looking for pristine, groomed rail trail then I suggest not going to
Haliburton. If you are looking for amazing single track then we'll see you at
the Forest.
Happy trails, Sharon

is really beat up. Allot of trees down. The Red Trail is beat up as well and
has signage up now that states that the trail is temporarily closed. The signage
is posted from the Dog Trail side. I ran the entire trail from Normac around
and it was fine, didn't see the sign until I exited the Red Trail.
