If someone is in need of pacing for the OT100, feel free to let me know.
I especially enjoy running after dark, but can run any time.

There is a link for the Ozark Trail 100 Yahoo Group on the race website.  I have been suggesting to all runners who want pacers, and pacers who want to help a runner, to put a post on the Yahoo Group.  Hopefully you will be able to find a runner there.  I know there are a few runners looking for pacers.  Good luck.

Howdy All,

Thought I'd drop a quick line to ask if anyone might have a 2'x6' small piece of
floor space they might be willing to "sublet" :) Would be very preferential to
camping / sleeping in car, all I ask is a place to roll out my sleeping bag -
I'd be willing to pay a full share of the cabin rental. Thanks in advance!

Also, while I definitely want to defer to others (especially first time
100-milers), I wouldn't mind someone accompanying me as a pacer for however long
or short they felt like.
Re: previous pacer offer - KC - if another week or two goes by without hearing
from anyone else, shoot me a message. :)

Cheers & God Bless,
Brad

If anyone needs a pacer, I am willing to pace up to 50 miles. I just completed
my first 100 October 2-3 in 23:05.

Hey All,
Paul and I will be out on the course this weekend, the 23rd and 24th. I plan on
running from the start to Gunstock Hollow at 34.8 miles on Saturday. On Sunday
from Gunstock Hollow to Hazel Creek at 68.5 miles. This may change some
depending on the weather for the weekend. Looks like rain both days. Paul will
be meeting me at some of the aid station locations and doing some trail
maintenance while I am running. We will be starting between 6:00 and 7:00am
Saturday morning.
So if anyone is interested in seeing some of the course or checking out aid
station locations just let Paul or myself know.
We plan to stay at Bass' River Friday and Saturday nights.

Just checking in - how did it go this weekend? How's the trail looking? I'm
starting to get excited (well, more so than I already have been!) Looking
forward to the report!

One more try before I resign myself to Casa De La Toyota Echo - anyone happen to
be grabbing a cabin at Bass River Resort who'd let a fellow runner borrow a bit
'o floor space to unroll a sleeping bag Friday night? Very much willing to pay
a full share of cabin rental!

Thanks & God Bless,

FYI - I edited the trail directions and saved them in a Word document for easy
printing. (Go to Yahoo Groups page for file.) They are formatted so they can be
printed out for different sections and placed in drop bags so the appropriate
trail descriptions are handy at the right time.

DISLCAIMERS: The mileage might be off by a few tenths of a mile here and there
as I combined the aid station mileage numbers with the trail descriptions. I
also deleted some information from the original trail descriptions to make them
a bit more concise for the purpose of staying on the trail while running. (The
original descriptions were written with hikers primarily in mind.)

If you see any obvious errors, let me know.

Hey All,

Was planning on getting the first 50-60 miles of trail checked out over the weekend. Ran into some very overgrown trail between Grasshopper Hollow and Sutton Bluff. Kyle Gibbs and myself ran from the start to about Mile 10 and started hitting patches of brambles and briars four feet high and all the way across the trail. There was about 4 miles of trail with large over gown sections.  We were able to cut our way through with some hand clippers but with some very shredded legs. Six hours to go 17+ miles.
So, Paul and I spent 2 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday and have almost all of it cleared. The rest will be cleared by race day. There will be about 4 miles that will be a little rough but still runnable. And no shredded legs. Other reports say the rest of the trail is in pretty good shape. Except for a few leaves.

We will be marking the course on Saturday and Sunday the 30th-31st. If anyone is interested in coming down just let Paul or I know. We will be starting early Saturday morning.

See everyone in a couple of weeks,

Stuart Johnson

Hello OT runners and enthusiasts!

I am a volunteer aid station worker at the OT100.  I am also captain of Team SLUG, which is composed of nine St. Louis Ultrarunner Group members who will be participating in an event called "Miles for Food" on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  This is a fundraiser, food-drive, and endurance run/walk competition that benefits a great organization called Operation Food Search.

I am pleased to announce that OT100 co-race director Paul Schoenlaub has generously offered to donate all unopened non-perishable aid station supplies from the 2010 OT100 in support of the Team SLUG Miles-for-Food campaign!
So, please eat light at the aid stations! (Just kidding :-)

If you would also like to support Team SLUG, I will be at the pre-race meeting/dinner as well as the finish line at the close of the race and there will be a Miles-for-Food donation box for accepting food/personal-care item donations.  I will be wearing a Miles for Food T-shirt at the pre-race festivities. I will also be at mile 51 if you'd like to drop off donations mid-way through your race ;-)

Don't travel home with that unopened food you didn't use for the race!  Drop it in the Miles-for-Food donation box at Bass River Resort!

Thanks!

Jen Eichelberger

(Under the "company" tab, please select a SLUG team member to ensure we are credited for the donation. Thank you!)

Each month, Operation Food Search distributes more than 2 million pounds of food and necessities to 265 food pantries, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters in 31 counties of Missouri and Illinois.  Operation Food Search feeds approximately 120,000 people every single month - nearly half of these recipients are children.

Howdy All,

From the better late than never category - as I was packing my drop bags
tonight, I recalled that I hadn't reviewed the water crossing waypoints for the
course - and that I hadn't seen them posted at all for this year. Here's co-RD
Stuart Johnson's post from last year about that; this year has been even drier:

--------------------
The only thing that should get wet on the OT are your shoes and socks. Extra
socks in your drop bags should keep you going all night.

The creek crossings that were wet last November were:
14.2M - Bee Fork - maybe 10"-12" [<-Really the only guaranteed wetness, and you
will get get]
28.2M - Brushy Creek
39.2M - Neils Creek??
60.6M - Trace Creek??
67.0M - Hazel Creek and one small creek just after that.
79.8M - Lost Creek
--------------------

Also, weather!
Sunny all day! 0% chance of precipitation (knock on wood)!

Start of race: 25 degrees and dark for at least an hour-and-a-half. Plan to
start with a light; they will have a drop box for them at Grasshopper Hollow (mi
8) for return to BRR

During the day: Not breaking 40 degrees until 11a, High of about 55, around 4p.
No real wind to speak of, especially not in the trees. Sunset at 6p; darker
earlier among the trees.

Night: Low in the low 30s. From experience, much cooler than this in the creek
bottoms during the night - plan to carry one more layer of clothes than you
might actually wear. Last year I was shivering uncontrollably around 5a and had
to send my pacer on ahead to the next aid station to bring clothes back to me.
Scary stuff.

Morning: Sunbreak around 6:30a - WITH TIME CHANGE. 30's/40's. Warmer - high in
mid-60's by afternoon (aka celebration/recovery time :)

***One other thing to note about trail conditions - the trail will be HARD to
see. 2 million acres of trees have simultaneously decided to go WHOOMPH with
their leaves onto the trail. Last year's winner called the effect "Trail by
Braille". Especially at night, you won't really be able to SEE where the path
is --- but you will be able to FEEL it. Hard to describe until you experience
it, but there will be a definite softness to the ground once you get off trail.

So close! See you all tomorrow!
Cheers & God Bless,
Brad

I just wanted to send out a big THANK YOU to all of the folks who supported Team SLUG in our food drive for the Miles for Food event this weekend!  We collected over 300 items  from runners, volunteers, visiting SLUGs, and unopened aid station supplies from the OT100.  (Oh yes, and Brad Bishop even rose to the challenge and dropped off a can of food at the HWY DD aid station at mile 51 of his race.  It wasn't in his drop bag.  He actually carried it there :-)

Thank you so much for supporting this great cause!

I wanted to also shout out to those who were brave enough to start this TOUGH 100-miler.  I was at the start line last year, and WAY UNDERESTIMATED the toughness of this course.

It's no wonder that less than 100 people signed up to run the race and even fewer started on that beautiful, and chilly Saturday morning.

I was supposed to sweep the first 42 miles of the course, but only ended up doing about half of that.  Congratulations to Rob Apple also on his strong determination to finish another ultra.  He was injured, but still finished! ;-)  Congratulations to Lee Dougherty for also finishing!  I believe he started the race 15 minutes late, and was behind me for a few miles, so he had to find the trail on his own since I was taking the ribbons down!  Wow, I would have given up if I had to navigate without course markings.

It's been a heck of a summer for most in the country with unusually high temps, so kudos for you all who trained through all that.  I just finished Massanutten 100 miler back in mid-May, but I think Ozark course is just as tough, if not tougher with all the leaves covering the rocks.  Again, my heartiest congratulations to all who started, and all who finished.  See you again next year.

Wow!  What a great day out on the Ozark Trail last Saturday.  I enjoyed every minute, and it went by all too quickly.  The aid stations were all exceptional.  Each of the volunteers were always so upbeat and such bright faces along my journey.   What a boost to the spirits!  I spend many lonely runs during my training on the Ozark Trail, so being able to look forward to the encouragement of each of you for the long haul come race day made it all worth.  I look forward to seeing you all next year!

Thank you John Goble. It is a certainty I would not have finished without you.
Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for listening. Thank you for refusing to
listen when appropriate. Thank you for patience far beyond the level of
reasonableness. Thank you for refusing to recognize that I quit. This was only
your first time pacing, and I can't wait to see how good your next charge gets
it.

Thank you all aid station volunteers - especially James, Deb, Kyle, Stacey &
Cindy. You saved my...bacon. :) Your patience, committment to the runners' well
being, advice and creativity on food were all spectacular.

Thank you consortium of six ham radio clubs, for providing a safety net in a
cell phone dead zone without which this race would be impossible.

Thank you fellow runners for your jokes, encouragement, extreme efforts and
willingness to push beyond all reasonable limits. Finisher or not, you're all
rock stars.

Thank you Mom, Alyssa, Brian Longfellow, Nick Kietzman-Greer, Trail Nerds &
Hawks & Gators & Masons & all running friends, Dr. Janice Louden, housemates of
this masochist, and many more for advice, support and mainly just general
putting-up-with-ness. :)

Thank you Paul & Stuart, for creating this wonderful, horrible, teaching and
rewarding experience. For being out there to cheer and help at the early aid
stations, for all the work you put in beforehand clearing trail, marking and
doing administrative head-spinning to make this race happen. Eight more, and I
know in a week I'll be saying I can't wait. :)

Cheers & God Bless,
Brad

To All,

A male runner came into Billy’s Branch aid station and borrowed a green, long-sleeve, v-neck sweatshirt. I think it might be from Old Navy. I’d like to get it back, if possible.

Hey Thom,

Great to see your interest! I've done this event each of its first two years,
and love it. :) Am currently at work, so will take more time later to respond,
but in the meantime, I might suggest purusing Kevin Sayers' UltRunR web site
(http://ultrunr.com/). He has a compilation of the "best of" advice on a
plethora of topics from the "UltraList" - an international listserv of
ultrarunners, including such helpful threads as "What's an Ultra Marathon" and
"So You Want To Run Ultras".

It's a tough one. The race is a point to point so you start and finish 102 miles down the trail. There are easier ones out there but the OT will get you prepared for the hard ones. Good Luck!

It is a great race, the support crews have plenty of food and motivation for you. The biggest mistake I made was not changing my shoes enough, I did my socks at every drop bag site but not shoes. I would say that you cross a creek of some depth every ten miles. Most of the crossings are shallow, maybe ankle deep. There are two crossings that the water is up to your knees.
Good luck and have fun.

I have been there twice.  First time as a runner, and last time as a volunteer.  I tried to sweep the course last October, but the loose rocks covered by the leaves made it tough.  It's a tough course.  I would say tougher than Massanutten 100 which I finished barely last May 2010.  One really needs to be prepared and want to finish it no matter what.

What made it tough for me:

The sun is right in your eyes--wear a hat or sunglasses.  The first year was unseasonably warm.

Loose rocks covered by leaves.

yes, water crossings--be ready for them.

time cutoffs--I'm not fast, and will work on speed for my next attempt at OT100.  MMT 100 has generous cutoffs (36 hours) and is doable if one is willing to be out there that long.

last year the course was very well marked compared to the first year, so getting off course (I don't use the term "lost" unless one never finds his/her way back again) was difficult.  But this is a race that's well run with wonderful volunteers.  I would highly recommend trying this race as one would definitely have bragging rights after crossing the finish line.

Are you sure Berryman is sold out? I registered on Sunday and the online
registration appears to still be open

Also, did not see on the website it was sold out, but I would guess it is very
close.

I found the OT100 to be the toughest race of my life. I am still feeling the
repercussions of it. Make sure you are well-prepared!

I am sure.  The race director sent an email to SLUG members a couple of days ago about it.  I'm guessing she hasn't informed Active yet about reaching the limit.  You may have a loophole to exploit, though you may want to be nice and ask Victoria before you do.

Regards,

David

Are you sure Berryman is sold out? I registered on Sunday and the online registration appears to still be open http://www.active.com/running/potosi-mo/berryman-50-mile-and-marathon-2011 Also, did not see on the website it was sold out, but I would guess it is very close.

I found the OT100 to be the toughest race of my life. I am still feeling the repercussions of it. Make sure you are well-prepared!

Andy

I ran in the 2009 OT only having ran a couple half marathons but I only made it 26 miles. Had I known about salt pills or making sure to eat enough I would of had a better shot. I would definatly get in some longer races and run at night a couple times just so you know what to expect.

Planning on running in this event. I've done lots of 5 and 10 k's and one 1/2 marathon, but never anything like this any advice would be appreciated.

I don't want to be a party pooper, just realistic. I'm a seasoned marathon runner and had some 50k in. I had to quit at mile 95 with two hours to go due to a stress fracture. I had never had a stress fracture before and I'm not in my 50s. So no bone density loss or issues like that. Just too much too soon. And too much in one setting.
So good luck with your training and be very careful.
Lucia
