Em(ily) and hardy friends like Kate have been doing occasional swims
at Berryessa to stay acclimated to open water, while folks like me
haven't put a toe in the lake since the air and water temp started
dipping in early October.
Today we took Emily up on her enthusiasm and met her at Markley Cove
at Lake Berryessa. At 2:30 p.m. we boated out to a sunny cove we have
enjoyed in warmer weather. Not surprisingly, we were the only boat in
the cove, and one of about 3 total out there; needless to say, we were
the ONLY people swimming;>)
Alan and dog Taj watched us from the boat while I, clad in my wetsuit,
"hot head" swim cap and booties, and Em, wearing a single swim suit
and two caps, set off swimming (we both used ear plugs). Em is a much
faster swimmer than I am, so she swam a zig-zag course while I headed
straight for the land point. That worked out perfectly, as she crossed
my path several times and we ended up at the point at close to the
same time.
As usual, it took me about 5 minutes to stop doing the breast stroke
and put my face in the water, but after that it was absolutely lovely.
The water is that unique Berryessa turquoise, the sky was blue blue
blue, and the trees looked lovely in their fall dress.
We swam for half an hour, then got in the boat and dried off, while
Alan poured us hot cocoa and chocolate liquor from the thermos. He had
his wetsuit on by then, and I drove the boat for him for his first
December water ski run in many years. He skied back to the 5-mile-per
hour area, which was enough time for him to get a nice smile on his
face and make some lovely rooster tails with his spray. We saw lots of
loons or grebes, and Em was keeping an eye out for bald eagles, who
are said to come to the lake in the winter.
The sun was setting, and there was a ripple of a breeze across the
lake. We were on the road home by 4:30 p.m. Thanks, Em, for your
inspiring enthusiasm and love of the outdoors. Just what we needed
today.
Cheers,
Lyra
Wonderful, wonderful Em! Thanks for posting the images. So glad you had fun.

Moonlight swim at Berryessa.
Meet at civic pool (5th and B) at 6:00 pm or at the lake at 6:30 pm
(first big turn-off from h-128, with yellow gate).
water temps are a little below sixty and we swim anywhere from half an
hour to an hour. un-tinted goggles are useful. bring some warm clothes
and hot beverage too!
we try to bring glow sticks and a kayaker to keep track of everybody.
Please bring a headlamp or flaslight for walk down to water. We went
last weekend and it was great. Shooting stars and amazing star gazing
included.
We did a night swimat Berryessa with glow sticks and a kayaker with a
red head lamp.It was AWESOME. water is about 60 and seemed warmer at
night than it had in the day (we swam the day before). New moon ment
not much light but great stars. If interested lets do one or two more
before it's tooooo cold.
Hello All,
Went abalone diving last weekend in bodega. Conditions were
beautiful, with the water being like glass early in the morning.
Visibility was easily 15 feet, and there was lots of starfish and
abalone to see. Diving proved very easy, and even though it was my
very first time and i was all alone out there i didn't come back empty
handed.
Hopefully things will be as good this weekend, as Dungeness Crab
season officially opens! Come check out the most open of the open
water swimming in the wide Ocean of Bodega Bay. As a bonus you can
bring yourself home dinner! Abalone your fancy? No problem, season
is open another month and there are LOTS out there. Just want a
challenging swim? This is the place for it.
No equipment? No problem. The Bodega Bay Dive shop has a complete
rental set for diving for $45 including fins, hood, suit, mask,
snorkel, gloves, and boots! Some of you are a lot tougher than me
regarding cold though i know.
I'll keep an eye on the surf reports, but let me know if you're
interested in coming along. Sat or Sun, weather depending.
Can't think of a better way to celebrate the Day of the Dead (November
2nd) than with a sunset swim at Lake Berryessa. We can meet at the
civic pool at 5:30pm on that friday and will be up at the lake around
6pm. We can swim together as a group and Nate has agreed to accompany
us in his kayak. (swimming as a group is great fun way to swim and is
a great help if you are feeling nervous) I will bring hot chocolate
and some snacks for after. We should be back to Davis around 8pm.
Send me a message at erevans@... if you are interested.

John and I (and Nate in a kayak) swam at Berryessa this sunday. I did
not take an official temp - but it felt same as last week (about 65)
The boat traffic was not too bad and with Nate on the kayak we could
swim freely with out worry of the boats not seeing us. The water
level is VERY low - probably the lowest I have seen it yet - but the
water clarity was about the same (4-6ft ish). There was a little wind
chop but nothing too bad. All in all a great swim and a pleasure to
swim next to someone - Thanks again John!.

Sounds good, I swim on Rocklin Masters and would like to get a swim in on Sunday. I drive a white 4-Runner, will look for some people with towels and goggles. Chuck

Okay let's pick sunday at 1:30pm for a swim at berryessa - I'll be at the first turnout past the dam and it's an easy walk down to the lake from there. To get there you take hwy 128 through winters- not long after you begin to climb up the hill you will pass the dam on your right - keep driving for a few minutes
untill you see a dirt pullout on the right hand side of the road with a locked get. I will be there.
If you think you might come - send me a message so I will know to look for you.

I might be able to make either one of those times, but
I just need to know where at Berryessa you plan to
meet up, since the lake looks pretty big on the map.
Thanks!

kate and I (em) swam at Berryessa this morning. It was 64/65 degrees
according to our thermometer. The visibility was about 4-6ft. There
were some random fishing boats and a few out skiing but for the most
part it was calm. We swam from the point near the dam across the the
dam-side shore and then along the shore for a bit.
Hope you all can join us next time

Anyone free on friday or sunday for a swim at Berryessa or Natomas?
Post or send me an email to erevans@... if you are and let me
know what times work for you and where you'd prefer to go.

Hello All,
I'm signing up for spearfishing lessons on the 20th of October @
Bodega. Classes are $75 + equipment rental (which according to the
website is about $45 if you need everything). There is space in the
class for 3 other people, so if you're interested let me know. I've
never done it before, but tasty fishies await!

Did anyone end up doing the folsom (natomas) swim this weekend? If so
- how was it - do tell. I went to see family in Tahoe this weekend -
went for a short swim there - the water temp was 58 - fall is here.
Em
When we were out at natomas a few weeks ago it was 65-68 and very
pleasant. I don't imagine that it has dropped too much - but I guess
it could have. Last year it did not drop under 60 degrees at natomas
until november.
If any of you end up doing the swim - please tell us about it - I'm
trying to get out of town to see some family - but it sounds like a
great swim and I wish I could be there.

No problem on missing the swim. Kate and I waited 10/15 minutes then
headed out - We started with run and followed with a swim. We ran all
around the great little trails and then after a short stretch hopped
in the lake. The temp was about 68 degrees according to my watch.
There was some wind that was fun and fast on the way out and made for
a good challenge on the way back. One rowing boat passed by and there
were a few fisherman on the shore but other than that we had the place
to ourselves.

Sorry I couldn't make it this morning for the swim- I woke
up in the middle of the night feeling sick and with really bad back pain. I
texted Erica at 2am(since that was the only phone number I saw on the email
thread) so hopefully you guys got the message not to wait for me at civic. If

Any stories to tell from the swim? Hopefully it wasn't too cold!
I'm sooooo sorry I couldn't make it. I was going to pick up my
roommate at the airport at 7pm but she missed her connection and
didn't arrive until 11pm. With all the getting her settled in and
chatting I didn't get to bed until 1:30. No way I could get up at
6:00. I'm really sorry I missed it though :[
Let me know how it went and if the water was chilly
you all have a good day
